What VPN to use and how to use it?

Hi, I have searched the forums and found various VPN threads, but there are so many posts, most of which are quite old now and may not be relevant anymore.

I'm aware that I'll need a VPN to access a lot of internet sites whilst in China, but I'm somewhat clueless as to what VPN to use or how they work. I had a look on the Apple App store and there are several free VPN apps.

Could anyone advise me on a free VPN app (or a few in case some become blocked whilst I'm out there) which will work well and ensure I have access to usual western internet sites.

Also a quick explanation of how to use it would be much appreciated.

You are willing to have a company analyze all your internet traffic?? When using VPN, all your internet traffic is collected by a VPN provider. Free versions need to make money some how. Some do it by selling your data.

Quick explanation. It's basically an app on your phone which makes your traffic come from the VPN company's server. If that server is outside of China, which it will be, then it won't be blocked by Chinese firewalls. But China knows about this and blocks many VPNs. People don't usually advertise the one they use on a public forum.

Honestly most sites work fine in China. The big exceptions were anything google and facebook. For most things google does, there are alternatives. Apple maps for example instead of google maps.
