Biography

Johanna van Polanen , called (nickname) Jenne, married at the age of 11 on August 1, 1403 Engelbert I of Nassau in Breda, by his marriage with Johanna he became lord of Breda ( 1403-1442 ) ;The couple lived in the Castle of Breda. They also had homes in Brussels and Mechelen. Probably what played a role in the choice of her husband was the fact that Engelbrecht was an outsider while on his descent was beyond brands. The Nassau were an ancient noble family from the Middenrijnse area. The marriage was accompanied by intrigues in which her mother Odilia and her paternal uncle Hendrik van der Lek played the leading role.
