Adams Pushes Double-Double String to Five as Men's Basketball Vanquishes Springfield

John Adams - WPI Men's Basketball 2023

Springfield, MA --- John Adams' (Douglas, MA) hot-streak continued as he dropped 27 points and 12 rebounds while the nationally-ranked WPI men's basketball team bested Springfield 83-58 Saturday afternoon at Blake Arena.

The double-double marked Adams' fifth-straight, seventh this season and 23rd of his career. While his 27 points tied his career-high set Nov. 20 of last season against Mitchell.

Saturday's game featured four ties and three lead changes in the first 6:53 of action, but No. 13 WPI (16-2, 8-0 NEWMAC) dominated from there on out holding control of the lead for the final 33:07 of the game to win its eight-straight victory and remain perfect in both NEWMAC play as well as the month of January. The perfect month was the second of the season for the Engineers (November).

Adams led the way with his 27-point outing with 17 of those coming in the second half. He was accompanied by John Lowther (Hingham, MA) who tallied 12 points, and eight rebounds and dished out a pair of assists while Donovan Sevilla (San Ramon, CA) added 13 points and four rebounds and added five helpers in the outing.

Springfield was paced by Daryl Costa (Providence, RI) who was the lone Springfield startet to net double-digit points on the day, finishing with 16. Tre Hodge (Springfield, MA) added eight points and Andrew Rocci (Plymouth, MA) added seven points off the bench.

The two teams went back and forth for the first six minutes of action before WPI began a 10-0 run that would span a five minute stretch that gave the Crimson and Gray a 19-9 lead with 8:54 remaining in the first half. The run was highlighted by points in the point and kicked off by back-to-back layups from Adams and Brett Marelli (Hampton, NH), followed by a layup from Lowther two minutes later and a Sevilla lay-up a minute after that. Sevilla finalized the run with another lay-in at the 8:54 mark.

A Costa layup for Springfield ended the stretch and marked the first Pride basket in nearly six minutes. The two teams traded baskets for the remainder of the first half, though following an Andrew Lufkin (Auburn, NH) layup at the 1:17 mark, Springfield closed the gap with a 7-0 run, behind a pair of treys from Nick Bray (Hartford, CT) to make it a 36-30 game at the half in favor of WPI.

The second half saw more even play, though a trio of Adams free throws helped build up the Engineers' lead early on. A Lowther and-one five minutes into the second half gave WPI a jolt that resulted in a 17-2 run that sealed the victory.

The Lowther three-point play was followed by a Sevilla jumper and an Aidan Callahan (Rowley, MA) layup to cap a quick 7-0 run. After a Hodge layup, the Crimson and Gray piled on a handful of baskets thanks to back-to-back jumpers from Adams, a pair of Ben Sseruwagi (Belmont, MA) free throws and a duo of Marelli lay-ins to give the Engineers a 61-38 lead with 8:16 remaining in the game.

A 6-0 run by Springfield cut WPI's lead down to 18, but the Engineers answered with a layup from Adams and a trey from Sevilla to immediately push the lead back to 23.

With a couple of minutes left, Matt Morvillo (Bedford, MA) enlarged the WPI lead to 25 with a lay-up of his own and finished the game with a career-high seven points making all three of his attempts on the night including his first career trey with 37 seconds remaining.

The Engineers are back in action kicking off the month of February with a game at Emerson on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 7pm in a game that will pit the top-two teams in the NEWMAC against each other. Springfield also returns to the court on Wednesday when they play host to MIT at 6pm.
