Shazam! and Kingsman star Mark Strong has now been confirmed to star in The Batman spin-off The Penguin, but who is the British actor playing in the DC TV series? Find everything we know right here...

We didn't initially pay a huge amount of attention to rumours that Mark Strong had been cast in The Penguin in a mystery role, but his trainer has now let the cat bat out of the bag in a series of Instagram posts.

Giacomo Farci was asked if it's true he worked on The Batman follow-up, promoting him to reply, "Yes, I've trained Mark for it." Asked if he could reveal who the Shazam! star is playing, Farci said, "I cannot answer to this question but I'm sure you will figure it out."

Needless to say, we're guessing he won't be reprising his role as the villainous Doctor Sivana, a villain whose story ended on a largely unsatisfying note thanks to an unresolved cliffhanger in both the first movie and Shazam! Fury of the Gods

So, who has Strong been cast as in The Penguin?

The most popular theory online is that he's playing the villainous Hugo Strange, a character who could quite easily be used to set the stage for The Batman II. After all, we're expecting to spend a fair bit of time in Arkham Asylum next time around with The Joker and The Riddler in there plotting something dastardly together.

Then again, we can't discount the possibility of Strong portraying one of the many crime bosses who set out to make Gotham City their own in the wake of Carmine Falcone's death (bringing him into conflict with "Oz").

"Oh, tons of violence, abject darkness and a man and a great struggle to try and claw his way to the top" Colin Farrell previously said of what can can expect from The Penguin"You know, there’s a power grab in Gotham now. It’s dark, man. Lauren LeFranc with her room of writers wrote eight extraordinary episodes."

"I mean, just really, really bold stuff. I couldn’t believe that it got as dark as it gets." He'd go on to say that the show, "would be a Hard R."

Let us know who you think Strong could be playing in The Penguin in the comments section below.

The Penguin stars Colin Farrell, Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Deirdre O'Connell, Clancy Brown, and Michael Zegen.

The series is executive produced by Matt Reeves, Dylan Clark, Colin Farrell, Lauren LeFranc, who writes and serves as showrunner, Craig Zobel, who directs the first three episodes, and Bill Carraro.

Based on characters created for DC by Bob Kane with Bill Finger, The Penguin is produced by Reeves' 6th & Idaho Productions and Dylan Clark Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, where Reeves and 6th & Idaho are under an overall deal. Daniel Pipski also serves as executive producer.

The Batman spin-off will premiere on Max this fall.

His name may be Strong, but he's a little skinny for Hugo Strange.

Shoulda got Dave Bautista (who is a friend of DC boss James Gunn after all).

I could see him as Hugo Strange aswell , especially if we get him
In The Batman 2.

Anyway , dude’s a great actor so it’s nice to have him in this regardless!!.

He could be just Dr Victor Fries in this, prior to his accident. He could fall into the nitrogen at the end of the series, setting up The Batman II.

@Timerider - setting up. reference. easter egg. reference. setting up. muh realism.

we've had how many years of batman and origins and references and setting up. just give us the villain in their prime. you don't need a backstory everytime. it's already known.

Timerider - 5/13/2024, 6:05 PM
@grouch - you set him up in the Penguin series, so that when Batman 2 rolls around, you don’t have too.

His accident and origin is in the series and not the Batman film. You’re not wasting time setting it up, he’s already Mr. Freeze at the very beginning of the movie.

A rival gang member, that's about the most bland and wasteful character I could come up with.

@HashTagSwagg - 100%, rather than utilise Strong at his best as a known villain with a comic accurate look, he'll probably just be some guy in a suit with a script of being angry at people.

@Patient2670 - Why do you not want representation in Comic Book Movies? I want Batman to be a queer black woman the way God intended.

Stop blocking progress.

I can see him as Zasz/Freeze/Hugo.
Something is telling me he will play a gangster. It would be nice to see him as a cop but I can't remember the last time he played the good guy. Me and his sister in law always joked about him playing another baddy.

@S8R8M - I mean, I wouldn’t mind him as Falcone. But he’d be great as freeze.

Since the movie is within its own continuity, maybe he's playing someone outside the Batman comics like Lex Luthor. But I do dig the thought of him as Victor Freeze or Hugo Strange.

First thought was Mr. Freeze...now I can see Black Mask, and Hugo Strange. Looking forward to the show though.

They should think outside the box and have him play someone cool like the Question.

RolandD
RolandD - 5/13/2024, 4:52 PM
@DocSpock - I truly doubt that they would do that but I would love to see a Denny O’Neil/Denys Cowan era Vic Szasz, although perhaps more so in the DCU. Unless it was done exceptionally well, I question whether he could carry his own movie, but I would love it if it was done right. It could be a little film more like and yet written as a character as O’Neil wrote him . I think he gave that character a lot of thought.

Mark Strong is awesome. Love this guy’s work. Is it bad that I’m more excited by this upcoming tv series then the sequel to the batman. Honestly Colin Farrell’s penguin was the highlight of the film for me. His performance was mesmerising. I’ll check the series when it’s released but I’m bored of batman reboots. The batman is good, well crafted and commendable but man i just wasn’t thrilled or particularly moved by it. Pattison is a good Batman though, I like what he brings to the table as the caped crusader.
