After spending hundreds of hours researching, reviewing, and testing mattresses, The DreamCloud was our best overall pick.
Whether you should buy a mattress online or in a mattress store depends mainly on your priorities, as both options have pros and cons. If convenience is your primary concern, the idea of spending hours going to a mattress store (or maybe multiple stores) and trying a bunch of different mattresses might make you immediately opt to buy online. Plus, browsing online gives you the ability to research and compare multiple mattresses across dozens of brands. On the other hand, buying in-store gives you the opportunity to actually feel a mattress before you buy it. For a product with the sole purpose of making you comfortable, there’s no comparison to trying it in person.
You don’t have to opt for just one or the other, though. Many direct-to-consumer brands have their products in brick-and-mortar mattress stores or showrooms so you can try them in person before ordering online. If you’re already researching mattresses online, you can narrow your options down and then find locations to try your shortlist in person.
A mattress should likely be replaced after about seven years of use, according to the Better Sleep Council. Research indicates that people tend to keep their mattresses a bit longer than this – just more than eight years. This time frame is reflected in many warranty lengths, which are rarely less than 10 years.
To clean a mattress, you’ll first want to remove all bedding and toppers. Some mattresses have removable covers that are machine-washable to make cleaning easier. You should always check with the manufacturer to make sure it’s safe to remove the outer cover of your mattress, though. Some mattress materials are not meant for direct skin contact. You can usually spot-clean stains with a household stain remover. For a general refresh, vacuum your mattress to help remove dust and debris. Baking soda can be used as a deodorizer. Simply sprinkle it on the mattress, allow it to sit for several hours, and then vacuum the mattress again.
In order to keep your mattress clean, several of the manufacturers in our rating recommend using it with a protector that can be removed and washed by hand or in a washing machine. A mattress protector can help you avoid damage to the mattress, like stains and spills, that could void your warranty.
