Buying chinese style furniture

I'm planning to visit Zhuhai and ZhongShan soon to buy some pieces of furniture. I have seen the Guhe Huacai antique market recommended elsewhere but would like to hear some advice from the locals as where are the best places to buy, how to move around, how far is ZhongShan from Zhuhai, and any other tips they would like to share.

Thanks!

Zhongshan is right next to Zhuhai. Taxi is the way to go.

If you like rosewood, you can go to Dachong Town 大涌, around one hour drive from Zhuhai depends on where you start. The rosewood market there is mature and offer a wide range of furniture.

Shaxi 沙溪镇 Town, next to Dachong, has the biggest rosewood furniture market in China.

Thanks for your answer!

I'm actually not looking for rosewood, but for painted/laquered furniture or lighter, less precious woods. Any advice regarding that?

There are two major markets for reproduction antiques in Zhongshan. Every taxi driver in Zhuhai should know where to go. Some will make to order. I once took some HK friends & we all fell in love with the same set of lacquered bedside cabinets. They said 10 days to make & ship to HK. My friends took photos of the one I bought and they duly arrived in HK, exactly as ordered.

I can't find my name card, but it has dragon ("long") in the name. Some items are sold as genuine antiques but there have been stories about wood buried in pits full of horse manure to "age" it.

Thanks! I'm not interested in antiques, just reproductions, so no risk of getting duped. If you end up finding the card please share it.

Also, was that a day trip? are the 2 markets close to each other?

Hi ignx, I was wondering if you had a good time or was successful in your furniture shopping in Zhuhai?

I was interested in going as well. Would you be so kind to share your experience and any relevant info//contacts? Many thanks.....

Foshan is the best place for Furniture sourcing and buying of China.

GF is quite wrong. Foshan is for modern furniture; Zhongshan is for fake "antique" furniture.

I've never found any furniture in Zhuhai, but Zhongshan is literally 20-30 min away by taxi, depending on where you start. (Chinese cities are like "counties" elsewhere - ie they are contiguous rather than discrete).

I have heard that some furniture doesn't survive air-conditioned apartments in the West, but I've had my lacquered furniture back in NZ for 5 years and it still looks good, except for a couple of drawer handles that were such soft "metal" that they didn't survive the shipping.

Hi,

As a Zhongshan-borned citizen, I would say in Zhongshan most of the furniture are made of rosewood. If you look for painted/laquered furniture in Chinese style, I am pretty sure that you can seek them in Daliang, Foshan. Most of painted/laquered furniture are in Western style.

I didn't see any "western-style" furniture in the 2 big markets I visited in Zhongshan. I saw very little rosewood too. The stuff I'm talking about is either old/fake aged cupboards, sideboards or reproduction lacquer-ware with gold painting. I've seen computer-operated lathes & cutting machines producing elaborate carved tables, bed-heads etc to order.
