This is densely packed with wall-to-wall narration, making it surprisingly visually uninteresting considering the aesthetic-minded topic it covers. But the interviews are fun and the big players are here. It’s substantive, not soundbites, and there’s no youtube fandom on display, unlike the last horror doc I watched, just the men and women who made the actual movies, so that’s nice.
And they all talk a little trash about one another, dish a little gossip, become defensive about objectifying the preternaturally beautiful Edwige Fenech, and just all-in-all reveal themselves for who they are as people. In depth documentary on the "Giallo" that is pretty damn enjoyable but get your noggin ready for a hefty 90 minute info-dump.
The presentation isn't exciting, instead you're just given pure talking head content from all the big directors, screenwriters, actors, and one verrrrrry knowledgable Italian guy who acts as basically the narrator (unfortunately I missed his name and was too lazy to rewind, haha).
I think I preferred "Yellow Fever: The Rise and Fall of the Giallo" over this for just being a bit more exciting to watch but I'd give this doc the upper hand for having better anecdotes and legit Italo-horror education.

Talking heads interviews with many of the genre's key figures including Argento, Fulci, Lenzi, Martino and the one and only Edwige Fenech provide a brief and often interesting overview of some of our favourite Giallo films.
This could have done so much more though and the primary narrator, film historian Fabio Melelli's tone is fairly dry and monotonous. With so many intriguing characters and a huge catalogue of wonderful content to draw from, I've a feeling there are probably better summaries of Giallo out there.

At least this will inspire me to make a Blu-ray purchase in the future... via Shudder I saw this documentary about a genre I enjoy and should watch more of. It was made by Severin as a few years ago they released a 2 disc and 1 CD set of the same name which has this, over 100 giallo trailers (which has to be an awesome experience), krimi trailers (those German thrillers that were an inspiration to this genre is something I've seen precious little of but that's something I need to do a deep dive on) and the CD is of tracks from various films. That should be a purchase worthwhile for me.

A little Hooptober bonus watch out of competition.
I noticed this on Amazon Prime last night after finishing A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, and before I knew it I’d fired it up.
I’ve seen nearly every film referenced here and most of the filmmaker and actor interviews have been excerpted on the various blu-ray releases of those films, yet watching the trailers and the wrapped interview/overview was terrific. I’d love to be able to recommend this to those first getting started with Gialli, but it contains so many spoilers I really can’t. I LOVE giallo cinema, so I feel like if anyone were to truly love this documentary, it would be me. While I enjoy it, it feels like more of a broad overview of several important names in the genre. There’s no revelatory analysis or hidden gems to mine. I believe I might prefer YELLOW FEVER a bit more (time for a rewatch I’d say). The ultimate giallo documentary has yet to be made. Maybe I need to get on that Kickstarter.

This is not an entertaining documentary with exciting music and a beginning middle and end.. nor is it a documentary for a giallo beginner. But it still had a lot of good information, and it was a real treat to hear from SO many figures from the genre. Martino, Ercoli, Fenech, Navarro, Fulci, Nicolodi, Argento, Bouchet, Hilton, Lenzi and more all appeared either on camera or audio from the archives. I got a little fangirly in the middle there. But overall this just felt really academic. I really appreciate it though. For me it brings a lot of closure to hear from these giallo players in their older age, especially as some of them have since passed.

Since joining Letterboxd, one of my very favourite film discoveries has been the distinctly Italian genre of Giallo. I’ve really fallen under the Giallo spell and have made a real effort to watch a range of films from some of the genre’s best known names. Whilst searching Youtube for All the Colours of the Dark a few months ago, I stumbled across All the Colours of Giallo, a documentary that explores the genre from its origins to its peak in popularity during the 1970s.
