Jackie DeShannon – What the World Needs Now Is Love Lyrics | Genius Lyrics

What the World Needs Now Is Love Lyrics

[Chorus]
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No, not just for some but for everyone

[Verse 1]
Lord, we don't need another mountain
There are mountains and hillsides enough to climb
There are oceans and rivers enough to cross
Enough to last 'til the end of time

[Chorus]
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No, not just for some but for everyone

[Verse 2]
Lord, we don't need another meadow
There are cornfields and wheat fields enough to grow
There are sunbeams and moonbeams enough to shine
Oh, listen, Lord, if You want to know

[Chorus]
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No, not just for some, oh, but just for every, every, everyone
[Outro]
(What the world needs now) Woah, oh (is love) is love (sweet love)
(What the world needs now) Oh, oh (is love) is love (sweet love)
(What the world needs now) Oh, oh (is love) is love (sweet love)

About

Genius Annotation

This song was originally offered to Dionne Warwick by Hal David and Burt Bacharach, though she turned it down. It reached No. 7 on the US Hot 100 charts in July 1965 and reached No. 1 in Canada.

This version of the song is featured over the final scene in the 1969 movie comedy “Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice” directed by Paul Mazursky. Towards the end of the film, the married couples of Bob and Carol (Robert Culp and Natalie Wood) and Ted and Alice (Elliott Gould and Dyan Cannon), long-time friends, are in a Las Vegas hotel room trying wife-swapping. After some underwear-clad making out, the four simultaneously realize the mistake of this attempt, get dressed and leave for a show. The song begins while they’re at an elevator. They walk through the casino in their original pairings and as they exit, they are followed by a throng of couples of various races, classes, orientations. All of the couples walk around in the driveway of the hotel, glancing in meaningful manners towards each other and we end with our original couples, paired with their mates, together. It’s a beautifully odd surreal end to a ground-breaking film.

Side note: Though Jackie’s version of the song is used in the film itself, the version of the song on the soundtrack album produced by Quincy Jones is sung by Merrilee Rush, most famous for “Angel of the Morning”.
