Adam Rich (1968–2023), “Eight Is Enough” child star

by Linnea Crowther

Adam Rich was an actor who starred as a child on “Eight Is Enough.”

Acting career

Rich had only appeared in an episode of “The Six Million Dollar Man” and in the TV movie “The City” before landing his breakout role as Nicholas Bradford on the popular 1970s-‘80s series “Eight Is Enough.”  Playing the youngest of eight children of TV dad Dick Van Patten (1928–2015), Rich was called “America’s little brother” and wore an influential pageboy haircut. After the 1981 cancellation of “Eight Is Enough,” Rich starred in the short-lived action series “Code Red” and had a leading voice role in the ‘80s animated series “Dungeons and Dragons” as Presto, the Magician. He also made appearances in TV shows including “Fantasy Island,” “St. Elsewhere,” “Silver Spoons,” and “Baywatch.” Rich had a notable role in the 1981 movie “The Devil and Max Devlin” and made a cameo appearance in “Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star.”
