Statement of Educational Purpose

The graduate school of culture and arts was established by Dongguk University, which is affiliated to the time-honored Jogye order of Korean Buddhism. To realize its mission of embodying Buddhist wisdom and mercy, the graduate school is committed to preserving and promoting Korean traditional culture and arts. Dongguk University opened its graduate school of culture and arts in 1995 in order to observe Korean traditional culture and develop it as a discipline. The graduate school offers programs in the divisions of Creative Writing, Theater Arts, Buddhist Culture and Arts, Arts Management, and Art Therapy. In addition, each division provides specialized majors to develop leaders for the 21st century by offering the students the opportunity of in-depth study.

The division offers theoretical and practical knowledge regarding various genres of literature including poetry, the novel, the essay, drama, scriptwriting and the nursery story so that the students can fully unleash their creative potential.

The division educates students to develop knowledge, skill and the decision-making ability required to produce performing arts and manage art organizations. It also helps students to understand the modern characteristics of plastic arts and apply this understanding to planning and management of related industries.

The division enhances quality of life by developing an art therapy based on the Buddhist spirit. Through academic research and empirical study, the division nurtures art therapy professionals, as demanded by current social needs.

 

Now the school is presented with an opportunity to achieve an even higher level based on the tradition of producing leaders in the various fields of culture and arts such as literature, theater and fine arts. The school, as a cradle of Korean culture and arts, will realize its educational goal and mission by developing the whole person with creativity as well as delivering knowledge and skill. The school offers several academic activities (arts festivals and seminars) and field training as well as lectures. The school also provides several scholarships to inspire in students a passion for research.
