Scholarships

To receive the Engineering Scholarship listed below and priority consideration for competitive scholarship awards, students must be admitted to the main campus before Jan. 15, 2024.

Those who meet the criteria listed for Engineering Leadership Scholarship will receive the College of Engineering’s four-year, merit-based scholarship listed below. Please visit UA’s Undergraduate Scholarships for Entering Freshman Students page for full information on scholarship application requirements for entering freshmen.

Incoming freshmen must declare a major within UA’s College of Engineering by May 1, 2024 to qualify for the Engineering Scholarship. Students must maintain enrollment in a College of Engineering degree program to receive any College of Engineering scholarship. For more information, read the policies for scholarship retention.

Currently Enrolled Student Scholarships

Currently enrolled students not already part of the Engineering Scholarship Program may apply for scholarships each year in their myBama account. Once you are logged in, you will click on the Admissions/Scholarships tab and then the Currently Enrolled Students link inside the Scholarships box. Awarding is subject to availability of funds. The deadline to apply is March 1, 2024. Entering freshmen and transfer students will gain access to the scholarship application after completing one semester.

Scholarship policies

Awarding Stipulations

Engineering scholarship support is for engineering majors only. It is unethical to accept scholarship funding from the College of Engineering if not pursuing a degree path within the college.

Misrepresentation of major for scholarship purposes is considered a violation of UA’s Academic Integrity Policy.

• Engineering scholars are expected to write an annual letter of thanks to the donors whose contributions make the Engineering Scholarship Program possible. Students having a merit-based, four-year award package will be prompted to submit a draft of the letter by their Crimson email each fall semester. For scholarships not awarded as part of a merit-based, four-year package, thank-you letters will be requested at the time of the award.
• Failure to submit a thank you letter will result in loss of scholarship for the spring semester.

Advising and Registration

• Scholars must be cleared to register by an engineering advisor. Scholars must register in accord with their designated engineering advisor’s recommendations each semester. It is not appropriate for a student in receipt of College scholarship funding to obtain advising/registration clearance from another UA academic advising center.
  • Exception for freshmen with an undesignated engineering major: Freshmen not sure if engineering or computer science is the right degree path and still considering other academic programs may consult other advising departments while researching options. However, course schedules must still be approved by an engineering advisor.
  • Exception for double-majors: Those with another academic major outside the College of Engineering must designate engineering as the primary major. Engineering course requirements must take precedence over secondary major program requirements. Scholars may consult their secondary major department for advising in that program, but course registration must be cleared through the College of Engineering.
• Scholars must maintain enrollment in a degree program offered by the College of Engineering. Changing to a major outside of the College will result in immediate severance of scholarship support from the College.

Communication

• Crimson email is the official method of contact for the Engineering Scholarship Program. Advisories, directives, inquiries and scholarship retention notices are all communicated via this method. It is the scholar’s responsibility to check email on a regular basis to ensure receipt of essential communication from the Engineering Scholarship Program office.
  • Scholars should add the email address for the scholarship coordinator, Laurie Mitchell at llmitchell1@ua.edu, to their contacts within Crimson email.
  • Do not filter out messages from the “eng.ua.edu” domain.
• When a response is required, it is expected scholars reply by the deadline specified or in an otherwise timely manner, within three business days.
• For question not addressed on the website, submit an inquiry via the Engineering Scholarship Program contact page.
  • TIP: Do not rely on word of mouth. Ask questions here or email Laurie Mitchell via official Crimson email account. Written documentation allows for more efficient dissemination of information and ensures consistency between the College and students.

Progress Toward Engineering Degree

• Scholars must declare a major within the College of Engineering prior to the start of their third semester at the University. Undesignated Engineering majors will be disqualified from receiving all remaining semesters of College scholarship support at that point.
• The College of Engineering requires students on scholarship make adequate progress toward an engineering or computer science degree. It is only when students enroll in courses with engineering prefixes or in course combinations specifically and uniquely required of engineering degree programs that the College would agree progress was being made. Basic science, math and elective coursework is considered core curriculum for all college students and does not fulfill Engineering scholarship retention requirements.
  • Stay on track with your major flowchart.
• Students in the Engineering Scholarship Program are required to maintain a 3.000 cumulative institutional (UA) GPA. Transfer credit averages are not considered.
  • Scholars who need help with studies can take advantage of the Capstone Center for Student Success for learning strategies and free tutoring in a variety of subjects.

Deferrals

• University- and College-level scholarships for students participating in the Cooperative Education and Professional Practice Program will be deferred by default during work rotation semesters. It is no longer required for scholars to submit a scholarship deferment request form when registering for Co-op. Upon receiving your job placement, the Co-op office will communicate a deferment request on behalf of students.
  • Scholarships from outside sources must be addressed independently. Directly contact the awarding agency and the Student Receivables department to ensure deferrals of any outside awards are processed appropriately.
• If deferring for any other reason, scholars must submit a request through MyBama by navigating from the “Academics” tab to the “Scholarship” pane and click the link for the “Scholarship Deferral Request Form.”
• Scholars considering taking courses during a deferral period should mention this in the request. Whether a scholar can take classes during a scholarship deferral period depends on the type of award being deferred and the nature of the deferral request. Determinations will be made on a case-by-case basis.
• Deferral requests submitted after the last day to drop/add for the current semester will not be granted.
• Exceptions for medically related deferral requests submitted after deadline may be considered.

Scholarship Probation

• Recipients of Engineering Scholarship Program awards are subject to grade point average (GPA) review at the conclusion of each spring semester. Scholars having a cumulative institutional (UA) GPA less than 3.000 will be placed on Scholarship Advisory with the College of Engineering for the following academic year. A courtesy notice will be sent via official Crimson email.
• During the Scholarship Advisory Period, the student will receive scholarship funding, provided the student is registered for an approved course load. Loss of scholarship occurs if the student does not reach the required 3.000 GPA mark by the end of the Scholarship Advisory Period. Loss of scholarship is final and there is no formal appeals process.
• Regardless of GPA or probation status, College of Engineering scholars found to be registered for unapproved course loads will be issued a Progress Warning. Conditions for scholarship renewal under a Progress Warning are case-dependent, subject to review for compliance, and in certain cases, may result in retroactive scholarship cancellation of that semester’s award if the student fails to complete agreed-upon coursework. Further details would be provided upon receipt of the Progress Warning notice.
