Happy Death Day was surprisingly good, but Happy Death Day 2U was shockingly good.

I caught HDD with zero expectations and was delighted, especially with the lead actress. I assumed 2U would be a typical sequel - more of the same ramped up a few notches. Boy, was I wrong. 2U was fantastic, and actually moving. Horror movies aren't supposed to give you the feels like that. When she sees her mother again? Wow. Fantastic.

I liked the first one much more.

Was surprised by it, like others mentioned

u/Rechan avatar

I felt that 2 was a bit more scattered and unfocused and the killing was kind of neglected.

u/HalloweenBlues avatar

Yeah. I liked the emotional arc of 2, but overall preferred the original. I think focusing on the doppelganger would have gone a long way to spice things up.

u/LakePiano avatar

2 is definitely a notch below for my brother and I. Felt flat out boring at times and very samey.

But... the bikini sky dive!

That's like 3 seconds of the whole movie

Well, it was like 30th on the "To Watch" list until this. Such a fun movie.

Here's something that might blow your mind: In the second movie, she wasn't actually in any danger. The only reason she got killed the first one or two times is because she got in the killer's way- after that, there was no reason for her to commit suicide, because the killer was no longer hunting her. She could have taken all the time in the world and then restarted a loop whenever she wanted.

u/sif-lovenikki avatar

I know I enjoyed 2 but I honestly can hardly remember anything beyond the final mom ultimatum and the first ten minutes

u/MeowAndLater avatar

It's been a few months since I saw 2 but I remember it more as a comedy, the first one felt more straightforward as a slasher (even if it had a few comedic moments sprinkled in.)

They're both great and I'm pretty sad they aren't doing a third.

You kidding, they goin to make it Happy D3Ath Day! Or Happy Death To M3!

Happy Death Day Tree

Tree fiddy

Sadly not. The "series" was cancelled.

u/Crosspaws avatar

Give it 10-20 years. Anything that has any sort of following will get a sequel/remake.

Can't promise it will be good though lol.

Edited

Still no Happy D3ath Day :(

I want Tree to die of old age after a great long life, and then waking up in the dorm again, now that'd be true horror.

u/TF_Allen avatar

Oh my GOSH that would be deliciously diabolical if they did it.

No, she should be like Sidney Prescott. She isn't allowed to die

The sequel did have good moments, but I can't call it a good movie. One of the biggest problems is that they completely dropped 2 Ryans' plot without any explanation. I loved that they manage to get the entire cast back, I liked to see some of those characters like Lori in a new light. The actress who played Daniellle was killing it in both movies.

I noticed that about Ryan. It was weird. The movie was so well thought out otherwise.

I don't think it was very well thought out, actually. Tree is never in any actual danger in the second film (outside of one or two of the loops) because the killer isn't coming for her, he's coming for her friend. Most of her deaths in this one were completely unnecessary.

u/TF_Allen avatar

That bit doesn't bother me because, until the last few loops, Tree didn't actually know that. I think the movie could have explained it better, but it appears to me that she keeps going back to save Lori, not quite realizing that Lori was the target. She seems to just assume that Lori dies because she happens to be in the path of the killer as he's coming for Tree. Eventually, she does figure out that Lori is the one being hunted in this dimension, but until then, she keeps killing herself because she basically just assumes the killer is still after her. Honestly, that's a reasonable assumption, from her perspective. Even though a lot of relationships are different in this dimension, pretty much all of the actual events are the same, so she just figures that she's still got a killer after her, but that it's a different killer and motivation.

I feel like the 2 Ryan’s plot was supposed to get explained in a planned third movie but it got cancelled

I doubt it. The second Ryan is simply missing at the end of the movie- as if he was never there. I suspect the movie went through some hefty rewrites after they had begun shooting- it's possible that when most of it was shot, there never was a second Ryan, and that was added in later as an easier way to get the plot going.

u/tbas29 avatar

Idk cause there were hints that tree winded up in another AU, which could’ve been a plot for a third movie too. Like the kid who dropped the food in the lab and wouldn’t eat it cause of bacteria but than dropped food at the end and ate it. It seems like all these little things were a set up for a happy death day 3.

u/Fast_Entrepreneur263 avatar

How would that mean they wouldn't have uncovered the 2 Ryans case tho?

What?

I did like the first one, the second I felt was less of a horror movie so I wasn’t as into it

the sequel was more a comedy-scifi flick

My wife cried during Happy Death Day 2 U. I'll never let her forget it.

yes both movies are great

u/eyecebrakr avatar

I always heard bad things about the sequel, I guess I'll have to see for myself. Loved the first one. Learned some valuable life lessons from it, honestly.

The second one mostly drops the horror stuff and is more of a sci-fi adventure type movie. The same style of humor is still there but the movie has a different vibe which seemed to put people off of it.

It's got some fun moments and is worth a watch if you dug the first one. Just know going in that the tone is different and the plot is easy to nitpick.

2 was barely a horror film, but still held up really well.

I seriously enjoyed both. Very original for the decade.

IMO the second one stunk.

Personally I loved the first movie and was pleasantly surprised by it. It was a light hearted slasher/mystery with a lot of humor in it. I thought it was very well put together. The second movie was decent but did not impress me as much as the first.

Second one was a miss but the first one is fantastic

Let’s be honest: there’s no reason this series should work. There’s no reason someone deciding “let’s make Goundhog Day but with murder” should ever work. But it does, and it’s fun. So, fuck it. Good movie.

I thought #2 was a pile of hot steamy garbage. Not only did it seemingly forget everything that made the first one good, but it clearly went through some extensive rewrites mid-shoot because the finished product has some amazingly huge plot holes that ruin the entire film.

2 was horrible and I had to turn it off. I loved the first one, but the acting, story, dialogue, in the second was god awful.

Totally agree, was surprised and really enjoyed the 2nd one.

Literally watching it right now and it's so much fun. I should have watched this sooner

u/Ruffled_Ferret avatar

I haven't seen either yet, but the concept is one I very much like. The trailers I've seen for the first film make it seem like a horror-movie-turned-comedy of sorts.

I honestly went to happy death day in theatres Asia’s f a joke. I assumed that it would be something funny and just a crappy movie to laugh about later with my friends. It was honestly way better than I assumed. I’m really looking forward to finding time to watch the second,

I haven't seen the 2nd one but I thought the first one was awful!

I reeeeeally did not like HDD2U. It came out so early this year that I can’t exactly remember my initial reaction, but on my ranking of 2019 it’s 56/58.

I do quite enjoy the first one though! I remember when I first saw it in theatres it was a packed house, and the audience was really... expressive? There’s a scene in which the protagonist is slowly opening a shower curtain, and as she pulls it open some clown in the theatre goes “ITS PICKLE RIIIICK”

u/jeremiahsimon avatar

Am I missing something on these movies?? I love horror with all my heart and film in general, when I saw happy death day 2U I thought it was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. I always see people post about how good it is on this sub. I must be missing something right? The whole science experiment thing was a total turn off for me and the acting was pretty bad too.

Agreed. I enjoyed the first but really disliked the second. It was so bad that it sullied the first a little bit for me!

You're not the only one. I thought the second one was awful. Not only did it completely undo everything good about the first one, but it was internally inconsistent, there were several scenes that made no sense and likely were the result of sloppy rewrites at the last minute, and despite desperately trying to make us feel emotions about the characters, the whole alternate universe angle made it all feel like nothing mattered. To me it completely missed the mark.

I didn’t like it much either, I actually don’t remember much of it.

Second one isn't horror tbh. Still liked it tbh

I much preferred the first one, the second lacked the tension that made the first one, it almost felt more like a comedy than a horror.

I'm still surprised it didn't do as much at the box office. Both movies also remind me of groundhog day

While it didn't do as good as the first one, it was still a success.

Then again, it was released on Valentine's Day and people usually don't see horror on that day. It's also why Alita: Battle Angel didn't make as much money.

Legitimately. These movies are some of my favorite in the last couple years. They are some of the dumbest and most fun horror movies! Horror movies nowadays are so self serious, flat, and unemotional movies. How can I get invested in horror when I’m not linked to the characters? And sure, the characters here are still one-dimensional, but they have progression and purpose aside from die or not die.

Idk, man, these movies are so underrated. And 2U is even better because it expands on the two things: 1. The dumb (sci-fi time/multiverse travel in my dumb horror movie?) and 2. Emotionality (seeing her mother again).

Love both movies, I'd categorise the 2nd as more of a sci-fi though.

Both great though and kudos to the lead actress!

I found them to be refreshing!

u/MitchMitcherson5052 avatar

Man I have the exact opposite opinion. I hated those movies. The acting felt weak and it was all just boring and overdone. Glad you and so many other people seem to like it though!

u/jeremiahsimon avatar

Me too I don’t see the appeal at all. I wish they left it up to the viewer as to why she wakes up everyday rather than make it some lame science experiment.

I have to take umbrage with your categorizing HDD2 as good.

I won't challenge you to a duel, but I am certainly giving you side eye..

I liked HDD2 better than the first honestly.

Literally. Both are very good and fun movies. Unfortunately there won't be a third under the same studio

u/Catbird1369 avatar

I seen both and loved them

u/nativeindian12 avatar

I loved the first. The second is not as good but I still enjoyed it immensely. I love horror movies, and have seen a ton of them.

Happy Death Day is not as meta as Scream, Cabin in the Woods, or Leslie Vernon, not as funny as Shaun of the Dead or Tucker and Dale, but a really interesting mix of humor, horror, and genre analysis that I enjoyed the whole way through

u/solvix avatar

Dude! I wish I would have posted this first! Totally agree ... and glad to see all the others that agree too! Good post!

I thought the first was alright. The 2nd not so much.

Thanks op! Watched them back to back yesterday. It was like Groundhound Day meets Scream! Great flicks

Glad you liked it!

In terms of plot the first one was better and funnier, but the second one had a great emotional bagage, which is why I like them both.

u/Caterpillar-7 avatar

Just watched the first one today now I’m psyched to watch the second!!!

Agree to disagree. These both are unoriginal and uninspired.

u/G-o-d_Himself avatar

I can’t believe people actually enjoyed these fucking films

u/shlam16 avatar

First was surprisingly good I agree. Second was surprisingly good for a sequel, but didn't quite live up.

I felt the exact same way as this post after watching the sequel and this is my first day joining this forum and I have the feelings knowing you also had the feelings and this is why I need friends who watch horror movies.

You'll definatly get them here.

A lot of people give these films shit but I thought they were very fun to watch

Don’t do that.... Don’t give me hope....

u/MeowAndLater avatar

Happy Death Day 2U jumped the shark a little a lot, but I have to say it had a lot of unexpected & interesting turns, which is more than I can say for a lot of modern horror (especially the type that is turned into franchises.) I probably enjoyed the first one more tbh, but I have to admire the Gremlins 2 level of insanity that is 2U.

Ugh... pg13

I just don’t count the second one as a horror movie. I liked it as a comedy just not horror.

I haven’t seen Death Day 2U yet! I’m happy to know that it is good. I always have cringe moment when movies bring out sequels because they’re not normally that good.

Ehhh, a lot of the people in here (myself included) really didn't like the sequel. Maybe you will, but for me the sequel was so bad I have to actively ignore it in order to still like the original.

Oh what?! I’ll just have to watch and see

Absolutely loved both, but the second is definitely sci fi and not horror.

Never seen them but part 2 gave me a Detention vibe so I'll check both of em out eventually.

I'm still hoping they will make a third one but it is unlikely.

My only issue with the second one was that Tree had to learn the same lesson over again about how she can't keep dying to reset the day as it starts to permanently damage her body. I also loathe Ryan as a character so making him a focal point in the sequel wasn't my favourite.

u/BlownHappyKid avatar

I heavily disagree about the sequel, and willing to debate, but I'm glad you at least enjoyed the first installment!

I really hope the third installment comes and closes the trilogy with Netflix's help!

u/absolutejabronie avatar

I only saw the first one but I thought it was just okay. Saw it on a date with a dude I wasn’t into though so idk lol

u/Sp00ch123 avatar

Happy Death Day is fantastic. Second one is pretty good too, but I think the first one is better because it integrated more horror.
