Civic vs. Accord: Which Is Better?

The Honda Civic and Honda Accord have been mainstays of the car market since their respective introductions in the 1970s, and for good reason—they're among the best cars in their segments. The Civic is a compact car, and the Accord is a midsize sedan, meaning they serve different needs.

We've compared these two Hondas in nearly a dozen categories to help you decide which one is better-suited to your needs.

Price

Winner: 2024 Honda Civic

The Honda Civic is smaller than the Accord, so it should come as no surprise that it costs less. It starts at $23,950 for the base LX trim, roughly $4,000 less than the Honda Accord's entry LX trim, which comes in at $27,895.

However, the Accord only has one other trim level: the EX, which stickers at $29,910. The Civic's similarly equipped EX trim comes in at $26,950. The Civic's top trim, the Sport Touring, starts at $31,450.

Seat Comfort

Winner: 2024 Honda Accord

The Civic is one of the most comfortable compact cars on the market, and front-seat occupants will be extremely satisfied with the plush, well-bolstered seats and ample head- and legroom. However, rear-seat occupants will feel slightly more constrained because of the Civic's diminutive dimensions.

The Accord, on the other hand, provides plenty of room for adults to stretch out in either row.

Interior Quality

Winner: Tie

The Honda Civic is an extremely nice compact car with well-fitted panels, a nicely integrated infotainment system and physical controls for climate and radio controls for ease of use. The Accord is remarkably similar, and both cars feel clean and modern.

The Accord is the more upscale, premium-oriented vehicle, and as such, its interior is a bit more upscale, with fewer hard plastic surfaces and more premium touchpoints. The Civic offers higher trims with leather and more premium upholsteries; the Accord Hybrid (a separate, more expensive model) has leather, but the all-gas standard Accord does not.

Each car has some advantages over the other, so we're calling this category a tie.

Interior Technology

Winner: 2024 Honda Civic

The 2024 Honda Civic and Honda Accord both feature a standard 7-inch centrally mounted touch screen. Other standard features in both cars include a four-speaker stereo, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, automatic climate control and keyless entry. Both cars have intuitive, easy-to-use infotainment systems with a clean design and a pleasant, responsive user interface.

The Civic, however, offers up to a 12-speaker Bose sound system to the Accord's eight-speaker option; the Civic also can be optioned with a 9-inch touch screen and wireless device charging, which are features the Accord doesn't offer.

Cargo Space

Winner: 2024 Honda Civic

The Civic sedan provides 14.8 cubic feet of cargo space, while the Accord has a 16.7-cubic-foot trunk. Both of these are great for their classes, and it shouldn't be a shock that the larger vehicle has more cargo room.

However, the Civic also comes in a hatchback body style that has much more cargo space than the Accord, coming at 24.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats. That gives the Civic the win here.

Powertrains

Winner: 2024 Honda Civic

The 2024 Accord features a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-four with 192 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque. It's paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT), and the powertrain has enough pep for most driving situations.

The Civic offers multiple engine options. The base model gets a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that has just 158 horsepower. Higher trims get a 180-horsepower turbo-four that feels much more alive under hard acceleration and delivers consistent power both from a standstill and at highway speeds. The Civic Si sport trim features a 200-horsepower turbo-four. The smaller Honda also offers a manual transmission in addition to a CVT.

The Accord gets 29 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway. These are fantastic numbers for the midsize sedan class, but they still trail the Civic's best ratings.

Ride and Handling

Winner: 2024 Honda Civic

The 2024 Honda Accord is a well-composed sedan. It focuses on comfort first, but it's no slouch on a twisty road, with agile handling and well-tuned steering.

Despite the Accord's fairly engaging driving dynamics, it's still not as fun to drive as the Civic. Most Civic trims blend sporty handling with a forgiving suspension that soaks up bumps without feeling sloppy. If a more serious sports-car experience is desired, the Civic Si firms up the whole car, making it razor-sharp in corners.

Reliability

Winner: 2024 Honda Civic

The 2024 Accord earns a predicted reliability rating of 80 out of 100 from J.D. Power. The Civic narrowly bests it with a score of 82.

A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average, and 0-69 is Fair. The Civic has a two-point lead over the Accord with a score of 82, which puts it in Great territory.

Both Honda cars are covered by a three-year/36,000-mile limited warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.

Safety

Winner: TBD

As of this writing, the Civic and Accord do not have U.S. News safety scores. As a result, we can't pick a winner in this category.

The 2024 Honda Civic has excellent safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), with five (out of a possible five) stars overall; it also got five stars for side-impact crash testing and rollover crashes. It earned four stars for frontal impacts. NHTSA still needs to test the 2024 Accord.

Both cars have similar standard driver-assistance features.

The Winner Is …

2024 Honda Civic

The Honda Civic wins this head-to-head on the strength of its cavernous hatchback cargo hold, superior infotainment and stereo options, strong reliability, lower entry price, impressive fuel mileage and outstanding powertrains. It also has excellent driving dynamics thanks to its well-tuned suspension, six-speed manual transmission and sporty Si trim.

The Accord is no slouch, however. It's still one of the best midsize sedans on the market and boasts more occupant space than the Civic; it's ideal if you're seeking a comfortable car with space for your friends and family. Even if you're not shopping for a family sedan, the differences between it and the Civic are so slim that both cars are worth a test drive to see which you prefer.
