Entering high school as a sophomore, I found myself navigating new waters after transferring. The teachers proved to be welcoming and supportive, yet the challenge of assimilating into the established social fabric weighed on me. Despite their warmth, blending in remained elusive. Each day became a tightrope walk between forging connections and feeling like an outsider. Academic pursuits provided solace amidst the social turbulence, offering a sense of purpose and direction. While the journey was marked by moments of uncertainty, the resilience gained through the experience laid a foundation for growth and self-discovery, shaping the narrative of my high school years.
My time at Downers Grove North, while equipping me well academically, was incredibly difficult socially. I have been teased relentlessly (particularly as an underclassmen) and often find myself being completely alienated by my peers. I believe that as much as Downers North prides itself on being a safe and welcoming environment, the school needs to figure out some sort of system to hold kids accountable when students report. It's always just a slap on the wrist and a detention, which 90% of the time people don't show up to anyways. I don't know enough about the deans' system to suggest anything specific, but the current methods are entirely ineffective in deterring students from acting out against their classmates. Many folks I know have had similar experiences with similar results from administration.
The best part about my high school is being able to connect with others who are around the same age and being able to get assistance from my teachers whenever I needed it. Most of my teachers were great about answering my questions and giving me the one-on-one attention I needed since some classes have fewer students than others. Another great part is being able to have so many opportunities that are open to me. For example, I would have never seen myself doing track and field and I joined it my first year and am still doing it. Also, all of the clubs, activities, and fun classes are here. I don't call any bad past experiences at my high school, but maybe just sometimes the amount of work the teachers give out. There is nothing I can think of that I think should change, maybe just the block schedule.
