Animal Kingdom

This dark and twisted family crime series makes a solid binge—with six seasons of gritty drama, Animal Kingdom hooks you instantly and never lets you go. The TNT series follows the SoCal crime family, the Codys—led by matriarch Smurf (Ellen Barkin)—after her daughter dies of an overdose and her estranged grandson comes to live with them, learning the ins and outs of their illegal activities along the way. It's safe to say this show is as addicting as some of the Codys' favorite activities, if you catch our drift.

The Americans

Former CIA officer Joe Weisberg's FX series redefined what it meant to subvert expectations when the espionage period drama debuted and made you root for the Russian spies living in America during the Cold War. Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys star on The Americans as two Soviet deep-cover agents posing as a married couple, living in Washington, D.C. with their unsuspecting, American-born children. And while their ruthless espionage exploits were fascinating to watch, it was their compelling day-to-day life as a married couple that made this a critical hit.

As We See It

Based on the Israeli series On the Spectrum, Friday Night Lights' exec-producer Jason Katims' 8-episode dramedy As We See It follows three millennial roommates, Jack (Rick Glassman), Violet (Sue Ann Pien), and Harrison (Albert Rutecki)—who live on the autistic spectrum both on the show and in real life—learning to navigate through newfound independence, relationships, jobs, and fears. Through its saccharine yet authentic tone, this coming-of-age story opens your eyes to narratives often underrepresented in Hollywood while also clouding your vision with tears.

Sometimes it's good to be bad, as evidenced by the Showtime drama Billions. Co-created by New York Times financial columnist Andrew Ross Sorkin and set in a post-crash New York City, the series follows a shady hedge fund boss and the U.S. Attorney trying to take him down in a thrilling cat-and-mouse struggle. Seasons 1 through 4 are free for Amazon Prime users, and the rest of the series is available with a Showtime add-on.

Bosch

This Amazon original series is based on Michael Connelly's best-selling novels, and Connelly brought the onscreen adaptation of Bosch to life as well. Starring Titus Welliver as the titular Harry Bosch, an LAPD homicide detective, the police procedural has run for seven seasons—and launched a spin-off series, Bosch: Legacy, in 2022—making it a solid binge.

The Boys

Season 2 of The Boys went out with a bang, a whammo, and a kapow, proving in a way that Marvel could never dream that women do indeed get it done. The superhero dramedy also secured a surprise Outstanding Drama Emmy nomination in 2021, setting stakes and expectations even higher for the series. Not to worry, however, as showrunner Eric Kripke brought a dayslong superhero orgy ripped straight from the extremely graphic novel's pages to the small screen—and he promised that wouldn't be the wildest thing to happen in season 3. Binge all seasons before its next.

Carol Burnett is one of the most iconic comedians in history, and The Carol Burnett Show, which ran on CBS for 11 years and produced 278 episodes, is her ultimate masterpiece. From all the laughs and ear-tugging to the importance of her shattering the glass ceiling with TV's first female-led variety comedy show, watch Burnett make history with this classic series.

Catastrophe

Is there anything like an unexpected pregnancy to bring two relative strangers together? That's the premise of Amazon's much loved—if little-watched—romantic comedy Catastrophe, starring Sharon Hogan and Rob Delaney, who also co-wrote all four seasons of the show. Hogan, a schoolteacher in London, and Delaney, an ad exec in Boston, have a one-week stand that leads to a mass of complications. Originally broadcast by the U.K.'s Channel 4, but exclusive to Amazon in the U.S., Catastrophe earned a number of accolades, including a Peabody nomination, several BAFTA nominations—with Delaney and Hogan winning for their writing in 2016—and two Primetime Emmy nominations. Carrie Fisher, in her last television role, played Delaney's mother, Mia.

Chuck

Another great espionage show worth checking out is Chuck, albeit for very different reasons: Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedak's NBC series lands more on the comedy side of the genre spectrum. Starring Zachary Levi in his career-making turn as the nerdy, awkward IT guy Chuck Bartowski, the cult-classic series begins when he accidentally downloads thousands of encrypted images containing the combined secrets of the CIA and NSA into his brain, making him the most important asset to both government agencies. Watching Chuck evolve from a hapless fish out of the water, thrown into life-or-death situations, into a superspy in his own right is just one of the many joys of this show. Watching him and his CIA handler Sarah Walker develop feelings for each other is even better.

This Amazon Prime original animated series is the perfect thing to watch with your young kids. Voice cast Kristen Bell, Jackie Tohn, and Luke Youngblood bring the musical adventures of the three best birdie buddies to life with fun original songs that will get your little ones moving and grooving.

Dom

Amazon Prime Video's first scripted Brazilian series was inspired by the infamous true story of a father and son on opposite sides of the war on drugs in Rio de Janeiro. Dom follows the father, a military intelligence agent who makes the war on drugs his life's mission, as he witnesses his own son struggle with addiction and emerges as one of the most wanted crime lords: Pedro Dom.

Downton Abbey

Created by Julian Fellowes, this period drama charmed British and American viewers equally. The Downton Abbey series, which ran for six seasons and two movies (Community, eat your heart out!), chronicled the lives of the British aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in the early 20th century in a delightfully soapy upstairs/downstairs estate that gave PBS a critically acclaimed period-piece.

Why should you watch Fleabag? The better question is why haven't you watched Fleabag yet? Phoebe Waller-Bridge's limited series, adapted from her one-woman play, is the 2020 Emmy and Golden Globe winner for best comedy. Good Omens

It's the end of the world as we know it on this Amazon Prime original series. Based on Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's critically-acclaimed book, Good Omens is a series (brought to life on TV by Gaiman) that makes for a quick but satisfying binge, as a neurotic angel (Michael Sheen) and a reckless demon (David Tennant) become close friends throughout history and end up working together to stop Armageddon—both to save Earth, humanity, and their own friendship. Binge the six-episode season before the second premieres.

When it comes to Hanna, you don't need to have watched the 2011 film of the same name to enjoy Amazon's remake. This international series has three seasons that follow the titular teen assassin (Esme Creed-Miles), and the bone-crunching, adrenaline-infused action scenes are some of the best TV has to offer. The spy intrigue will have you on the edge of your seat the entire time.

Pack your bags because it's time to head to Harlem. Amazon's smart and breezy comedy from creator Tracy Oliver follows four thirtysomething female friends navigating life and love—Camille (Meagan Good), an up-and-coming anthropology professor who's trying to get over her ex and not backslide; dating-app mogul Tye (Jerrie Johnson); aspiring singer Angie (Shoniqua Shandai); and struggling fashion designer Quinn (Grace Byers).

If you're tired of regular medical dramas, but still want some drama about medicine in your life, this award-winning, long-running series is the perfect binge. Hugh Laurie stars as the misanthropic, pain pill-addicted, and arrogant genius that is Dr. House. Flanked by a team of superstar doctors, his diagnostic team solves the cases that others can't. The Fox procedural takes a good, hard look at what's wrong with modern medical practices—and people—while also serving up some of the most complex and heart-wrenching relationships on TV. House isn't for the faint of heart—and we mean that literally and figuratively.

Hunters

What do you get when you take one of Hollywood's greatest actors and pit him against Nazis who have seamlessly integrated into American society? Amazon's violent yet charming Hunters is what EW TV critic Kristen Baldwin called a "strange, stunning, and darkly comic thriller," about a secret band of vigilantes hunting down Nazi war criminals over the world. Set in 1977, Al Pacino plays Meyer Hoffman, a wealthy Holocaust survivor, who's the leader of the shadow organization. When his old friend and colleague Ruth (Jeannie Berlin) is murdered, he takes her grandson Jonah (Logan Lerman) under his wing and teaches the kid the tricks of his trade. Though there's no premiere date yet for season 2, we do know that the hunt will be on for the biggest bad in history.

Invincible

The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman offers another comic book adaptation series, but this one is a lot different. Invincible is an adult animated superhero show centered on teen Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), the son of the most powerful superhero on the planet, Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons). As Mark develops powers of his own, he soon discovers that his father's legacy may not be as heroic as it seems.

Lizzo's Watch Out for the Big Grrrls

It's about damn time we have a body-positive competition show—one that's also good as hell! Grammy winner Lizzo, who is a pioneer for plus-size women in entertainment, hosts this three-time Emmy-winning show where she searches for Big Grrrl background dancers (qualified enough to "f--- it up to the tempo") for her 90-minute set at Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. Consisting of professionally-trained and self-taught dancers of different shapes and colors, contestants take on weekly challenges that campaign for self-expression (nude photoshoots, music videos, and choreography routines) that keep the juice flowing. There's so much more to squeeze out of these vibrant 50-minute episodes, yet, no matter the winner, Lizzo makes sure that every one of these women remains 100 percent that bitch.

Are you looking for your next true crime obsession? Look no further than LuLaRich. From the directors of Fyre Fraud comes this Amazon Prime Video original docuseries about the long-con of the LuLaRoe fashion empire's multi-level marketing scheme. With only four episodes, it's a quick binge—especially since the shocking revelations about the pyramid scheme will hook you immediately…and have you second-guessing about those buttery-soft leggings you're wearing.

The Man in the High Castle

What if the Nazis won WWII? That's exactly what this Amazon Prime original series explores via a dystopian alternate history, inspired by the novel by Philip K. Dick. The period drama begins when characters discover mysterious footage showing Germany and Japan losing the war (a.k.a. the real version of events), as they attempt to learn more about the unknown person believed to have made the newsreels.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Calling all Gilmore Girls fans—if you've been missing Amy Sherman-Palladino's signature fast-talking, witty, plucky heroines, this Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning Amazon Prime original is made just for you. Starring Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein, this period comedy follows Miriam "Midge" Maisel, a housewife in late-1950s–early-1960s New York City who discovers her passion lies in stand-up comedy. Against the odds, she actually pursues a career in it, fighting misogyny and sexism in the comedy world every step of the way. (Don't tell poor Midge how little things have changed for women in comedy in the 21st century.)

Mr. Robot

Sam Esmail's award-winning psychological and tech thriller Mr. Robot stars Rami Malek as Elliot Alderson, a cybersecurity engineer and hacker with social anxiety, dissociative identity disorder, and clinical depression, who gets recruited by an anarchist hacktivist group, "fsociety," with plans to destroy all debt by hacking the financial data of E Corp—the largest conglomerate in the world. This dark series is one of the rare times that pop culture has gotten hacking right, as it's widely praised by coders, cybersecurity firms, and hackers for its accurate depictions of hacking scenes. And the extremely unreliable narrator will constantly keep you guessing in the best way, since not even Elliot knows what's real.

Modern Love

Let's talk about love, baby! Amazon Prime Video's anthology series Modern Love is based on The New York Times's popular column of the same name, and each episode brings a new story about love to life. The romantic comedy series can be heartbreaking, heartwarming, inspiring, shocking, and so much more, as episodes explore the intense complexities of love, in all its forms—this one's for all the romantics out there. Paper Girls

Most of us would be mortified if the prepubescent, gauche 12-year-old versions of ourselves paid us a visit...or maybe it'd be the other way around. Based on the eponymous sci-fi comic book series by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang, Paper Girls meets 33-year-old Erin Teing (Ali Wong) crossing paths with her preteen self from 1988 (Riley Lai Nelet), along with her young posse of time-traveling newspaper pals. We've seen an '80s renaissance in media with projects like Stranger Things and the Fear Street trilogy, but its comic creators are here to give us a "death threat" to the romanticized decade, offering the phrase "killing time" a whole new meaning.

Patriot

There's so much content, sometimes you blink and completely miss a worthwhile show. At a scant, highly-bingeable two seasons—18 episodes in total—Patriot (2017–18) was, as EW TV critic Jeff Jensen said in his review, "a strikingly original dramedy." From Pursuit of Happyness scribe Stephen Conrad, Patriot follows secret agent John Tavner (Michael Dorman) as he bungles his way through a government plot to impede Iran's nuclear ambitions that involves working at a Milwaukee piping firm. Misunderstandings and shady dealings abound. Despite its spy-like low profile, Patriot managed to snag a Critics' Choice Television Award nomination for Best Comedy in 2017, losing out to Amazon's buzzier chuckle-fest, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

When this teen supernatural reboot was first announced, people laughed it off. A modern-day retelling of Michael J. Fox's 1985 campy movie? This Amazon Prime Video original anthology series is set in the '50s and will scare the living crap out of you. Horror fans, Them's for you! Executive-produced by Lena Waithe and created by Little Marvin, the limited series explores the terrors of Black trauma in America. Watch this one with the lights on.

This Amazon Prime original series comes from the brilliant, comedic mind of Greg Daniels (The Office, Parks and Rec), as he sets his hilarious sights on sci-fi. But as he befriends his "angel" a.k.a. living human handler, he starts to question his life, death, and everything in between.

Utopia

Based on Dennis Kelly's 2013 U.K. series of the same name, this eight-episode Amazon original series follows a group of comic book nerds who come to believe a mysterious graphic novel may hold the key to saving the planet. Showrunner Gillian Flynn describes it as "Marathon Man meets The Goonies," and "a story about truth, spin, conspiracy, friendship, courage, and bunnies." Buckle up because this new conspiracy thriller is worth the ride.

The Wilds

Think Lost combined with My So-Called Life with a splash of Lord of the Flies, but centered on teen girls and you've got this Prime Video original series The Wilds. The first season of this beautifully shot and tense drama is part survival drama, part dystopian slumber party, as The Wilds follows a group of teen girls from different backgrounds who must fight for survival after a plane crash strands them on a mysterious deserted island. As the castaways grapple with their new dire circumstances, they both clash and bond as they learn more about each other, the secrets they keep, and the traumas they've all endured. But what they don't know is the biggest twist of all: These girls did not end up on this island by accident.

'Tis the season for romance, and this new Latinx rom-com delivers! World's Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji

If you like Survivor, The Amazing Race, The Challenge, or really any competition reality series, then Amazon's fierce odyssey World's Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji, hosted by Bear Grylls, is worth a watch. The quick, 10-episode adventure series is executive produced by reality competition godfather Mark Burnett and follows the ultimate expedition race, in which 66 teams from 30 countries compete nonstop for 11 days across hundreds of miles of rugged terrain, with only a map and compass for navigation. The diverse competitors span all ages, races, sexualities, and fitness levels, and the event series will push them to their limits with activities like hiking, mountain biking, paddle boarding, rock climbing, and whitewater rafting. "At its core, World's Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji is about perseverance," according to the official series description.
