Obituary

Earle Robert Ayers, 92, of Tunkhannock, formerly of Mehoopany, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2024 at the VA Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre.

Born on the family farm in Noxen on May 31, 1931, he was the son of the late Earle G. (d.1974) and Mildred Foote Ayers (d.2002).

He was a graduate of Tunkhannock High School and received his Doctor of Chiropractic from Lincoln Chiropractic College in Indiana.

Earle became known as “Doc” to many over the years.  He was a 3rd generation chiropractor by trade and established a successful practice in Mehoopany. He enjoyed fly fishing for native brook trout in the brooks and runs of Mehoopany and Bowmans Creek, and passed along this affection for fishing to almost all of his grandchildren.  He was considered an expert in the game of shuffleboard and developed lifelong friendships while playing the game.  His proudest moments included cheering on his grandchildren from local through national running events.

He was a member of the Mehoopany Methodist Church, Tunkhannock Moose Lodge and Rought Hall Post #510 American Legion, of Black Walnut. He was a veteran of the Korean War and served alongside his lifelong friend Ace Shupp.

Earle was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Nancy, on December 25, 2023, along with sisters Betty Carichner and Alice Steiner, brothers Raymond and Robert Ayers, and son in law Francis Howell.

Earle is survived by daughter Kim Ayers Howell, sons Keith (Vickie) Ayers and Kevin (Karin) Ayers, grandchildren Megan, Aaron (Annmarie) and Collin Howell, Christopher Ayers, and Nathan (Jennifer), Tenleigh (Adam), Tierney (Joey), Reece (Sarah), and Carson (Rachel) Ayers. He had numerous great grandchildren, and was affectionately known as pop to all.

A public celebration of life for Earle and Nancy will be held at the Rought Hall Post #510 American Legion, in Black Walnut, PA, on July 6, 2024 at 12:00 PM.  A Military Honors Service will be conducted by the members of the Rought Hall Post #510 American Legion and the Dennis Strong Post #457 American Legion preceding the Celebration of Life Services.

As per their wishes a chicken BBQ with food and drink will be provided, following the services.

Arrangements were made through the Sheldon Funeral Home, 8206 Main St., Meshoppen, PA 18630.
