Pupil Admission Number (PAN) Reduction Consultation

Consultation – Harlington Upper School reduction of Published Admission Number (PAN)

The Published Admission Number (PAN) at Harlington Upper School is currently 300. This means that the number of pupils admitted to the academy in Year 9 each year is a maximum of 300. The Trustees, Governors and Senior Leadership Team at Harlington Upper School wish to reduce this by 30 places which will result in an annual pupil intake of 270 effective September 2025 onward.

Reducing the PAN is a response to the declining birth rates in the local area and the introduction of new schools further afield. Reducing the PAN will aid the school in effectively planning appropriate staffing and provision for our future cohorts and ensuring we continue to secure high-quality educational outcomes for the pupils currently on our roll while continuing to provide an appropriate number of places for future pupil numbers in line with current demand.

It is important to the school to consider the views of our parents/carers and the wider community. If you would like to contribute to the consultation please email hjones@harlington.org with your views.

School Admissions

Central Bedfordshire Council provide the service for School Admissions.

Children normally transfer at 13+ (end of Year 8) to the catchment area upper school. All upper schools have a 6th form and pupils may remain at the school up to the age of 18 or 19 years.

Parents have a right to express a preference for a school which is not within the catchment area, but places can only be offered if there is space available. If the number of requests for places at a school exceeds the number of places available, places will be allocated in accordance with the Admissions Criteria for that school.

If you would like any information about admissions to school or the transfer process, you can contact the School Admissions Service by letter or e-mail or click on the following link:

General Information for Parents

During the year before transfer

All prospective parents will be invited to an “Open Evening” at Harlington to meet the Headteacher, staff and students; this is usually held in early October.

Parents and students are then invited to apply for their place through Central Bedfordshire Admissions Service by the end of October.

Parents and Students are notified of their place in line the national offer day on the 1st March.

In early July pupils who are transferring to Harlington will be invited to spend one day at the school working with their new teachers and becoming familiar with the school. Parents are then invited to an Information Evening that day.
