Weather in Chennai Highlights (December 10): Cyclonic storm Mandous, which crossed the coast at Mamallapuram near here, has weakened into a deep depression but the weather system impacted the city and its neighbourhoods, uprooting a number of trees. Around 400 trees fell in the city under the impact of 70 kmph wind speed when the weather system crossed the coast in the intervening night of December 9 and 10, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin said. Four persons were killed, he said without elaborating, news agency PTI reported. Civic agencies, including the Greater Chennai Corporation here, were involved in removing the fallen trees.
The cyclone weakened into a deep depression in the early hours of Saturday, and lay centred 55 km north-northwest of Mahabalipuram and about 40 km west-southwest of Chennai. It will further weaken into a depression by this afternoon. Light to moderate rainfall is predicted in most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places across north interior Tamil Nadu.
A holiday has been declared on Saturday for schools and colleges in Chennai, and other districts including Vellore, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram due to rain forecast. As many as 16,000 police personnel and 1,500 Home guards have been deployed in the state for security, relief and rescue tasks, and a 40-member team of the Tamil Nadu State Disaster Response Force, in addition to 12 District Disaster Response Force teams, are on standby, the police said. Nearly 400 personnel of the NDRF and State Disaster Response Force teams have been stationed in coastal regions, including near the Cauvery delta area.
Relatively a lesser degree of damage, including those to houses marked the landfall of cyclonic storm Mandous in Tamil Nadu and at least four people were killed in rain-related incidents, authorities said here on Saturday.
'There is no damage on a large scale,' Chief Minister M K Stalin said after visiting affected fishing neighbourhoods here and distributing relief assistance to them. Tamil Nadu and particularly Chennai has 'come out of the impact of Mandous,' he said.
Stalin, answering a question, told reporters that estimation of loss was being done and if required Central assistance would be sought. Four persons were killed, he said, apparently referring to rain-related incidents. As many as 181 houses --hutments-- were damaged and information on other kinds of damage was being compiled. In 201 relief camps, 9,130 people belonging to 3,163 families are being sheltered. (PTI)
Roads got submerged and traffic was disrupted, as rivers overflowed in several areas of the KVB Puram Mandal on Saturday due to heavy rainfall in the region following Cyclone Mandous. The areas that faced such overflow of rivers included Kovanur, Thimmasamudram, and Rajula Kandiga.
Earlier today, the KVB Puram Mandal in Andhra Pradesh's Tirupati district recorded the highest rainfall at 258mm due to Tropical Cyclone Mandous currently active in the Bay of Bengal region, said official sources. As per sources, the way from KVB Puram Mandal, under the Satyavedu constituency, towards the Srikalahasti is completely blocked due to heavy water flow from nearby ponds and lakes.

Cyclone Mandous on Saturday caused waterlogging at the Marina beach in Chennai and damaged the food stalls.
A recently built wooden ramp for the disabled at Chennai’s Marina beach was damaged by intense waves on account of cyclone Mandous Friday morning.
The 263-metre-long, 3-metre-wide ramp was constructed with a mix of several categories of wood, including Brazilian wood, at a cost of Rs 1.14 crore, according to officials. It was inaugurated by Chepauk MLA and Chief Minister MK Stalin’s son, Udhayanidhi Stalin. (Read more)
Bengaluru is likely to witness light to moderate rains and cloudy skies until Sunday, due to the effect of cyclone Mandous, which crossed the coast in neighbouring Tamil Nadu. The city has been witnessing light to moderate rains since this morning.
"Generally cloudy sky. Light to moderate rain is very likely. Surface winds are likely to be strong at times. Mist is very likely during early morning hours in some areas. Maximum and minimum temperatures very likely to be around 24 and 19 Degrees Celsius respectively," India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast for the next 48 hours, issued earlier on Saturday said.
According to the Met department, rainfall occurred at a few places over South Interior Karnataka and at isolated places over Coastal and North Interior Karnataka. Forecasting light to moderate rain is very likely to occur at most places over South Interior Karnataka and at a few places over Coastal and North Interior Karnataka during the next 24 hours, a release said, heavy to very heavy rain very likely to occur at isolated places over Bengaluru Rural, Chitradurga, Mandya, Ramanagara and Tumkur districts. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) on Saturday initiated relief and maintenance work after the havoc casued by Cyclone Mandous in the city. The municipal body is taking all measures to clear the uprooted trees and fallen tree branches.
"Power to street lights are cut and will be resumed after clearing the trees. Mosquito fogging activities are also done. Please contact us at 1913 for any help," GCC said in a tweet.

Stalin, who reviewed the situation at Kasimedu area, told reporters that the government anticipated the situation and put in all preventive measures and could therefore prevent major damage.

Greater Chennai Corporation Commission, Gangandeep Bedi, said that more than 200 people have been relocated to relief camps due to heavy rainfall caused by Cyclone Mandous, and around 9,000 people have been provided.

The well-marked low-pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal intensified into a depression on December 6 and it further intensified into a “deep depression” and lay about 750 km off Chennai as of Wednesday.

The Greater Chennai Traffic Police Saturday announced that vehicular movement along the East Coast Road (ECR) resumed at 6 am. The stretch had been closed since 10 pm last night, due to Cyclone Mandous.
In a tweet, the police said, "In view of the Mandous cyclone, Traffic was not allowed bothways on ECR between Akkarai and Kovalam except for the residents living in this stretch and emergency services vehicles from 10 pm on 09.12.2022. From 6 am on 10.12.2022, Traffic is allowed as usual".

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin inspected the State Emergency Operation Centre of the Revenue and Disaster Management Department in Chennai, and monitored its functioning, as heavy rainfall lashes Chennai and parts of the state due to Cyclone Mandous. Stalin interacted with people accommodated at temporary relief centres to check whether they are provided with all necessary facilities.
Addressing the reporters, Stalin said that an IAS officer has been appointed for each district as monitoring officers and said, "No matter how much it rains, this government will be taking all possible measures to safeguard its people," Stalin said. In view of heavy rainfall predicts in Tamil Nadu caused by Cyclone Mandous, Dindigul Collector has declared a holiday for schools and colleges in Sirumalai and Kodaikanal on Saturday.
As a precautionary measure as Cyclone Mandous is likely to make landfall in Chennai tonight, vehicle movement is temporarily suspended in ECR from 10 pm on Friday. An order by Chengalpettu Collector said that only vehicles for emergency services will be allowed. The restrictions will be removed after the cyclone weakens.

At the disaster management control room in Chennai, Chief Minister M K Stalin reviewed the preparedness by interacting with monitoring officers and officials in districts. The Chief Minister later told reporters that all appropriate steps have been taken to tackle the situation and protect the people. Chief Secretary V Irai Anbu chaired a meeting of senior officials and reviewed the preparatory measures.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its latest bulletin, said that Cyclone Mandous moved northwestwards with a speed of 14 kmph during past 06 hours and lay centered at 17:30 hours IST on Friday over Southwest Bay of Bengal off north Tamilnadu and Puducherry coasts near latitude 12.0°N and longitude 80.8°E, about 380 km north of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 280 km north-northeast of Jaffna (Sri Lanka), 90 km southeast of Mamallapuram and about 130 km south-southeast of Chennai. The cyclone is being monitored by Doppler Weather Radar Karaikal and Chennai, it said.
"It is very likely to move nearly northwestwards and cross north Tamilnadu, Puducherry and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts between Puducherry and Sriharikota around Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram) as a cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 65-75 kmph gusting to 85 kmph during midnight of today, the 09th December to early hours of tomorrow, the 10th December," the bulletin said.
Ten teams of NDRF and Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Response Force have been deployed in south coastal districts of the State following heavy rainfall alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a top official said on Friday.
According to the IMD, heavy rainfall is predicted over several parts of the State as cyclone 'Mandous' over the Bay of Bengal is expected to cross the coast between the Union Territory of Puducherry, and Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, tonight “As of now, there are no heavy rains. Collectors of the six districts which are expected to receive heavy rainfall due to the cyclone have been alerted and control rooms also been opened,” B.R Ambedkar, director of the State Disaster Management, told PTI.
“Five NDRF and another five SDRF teams have been kept ready. We are also ready to evacuate people in case of emergency,” he further said. In view of Cyclone Mandous, which is set to make landfall in Tamil Nadu tonight, State's Revenue and Disaster Management Minister KKSSR Ramachandran, and other senior officials of the Disaster Management Department held a meeting on Friday at the State Emergency Operation Centre at Chepauk to discuss precautionary measures, news agency ANI reported.
The Chennai police have said they are working in coordination with the city corporation and the departments of fire and rescue and electricity to provide rescue and relief services in view of Cyclone Mandous even as 13 flights stood cancelled on Friday. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclonic storm, which had moved west-northwestwards over the Bay of Bengal with a speed of 12 kmph in the past six hours, has weakened.
