About the author
Stieg Larsson, who lived in Sweden, was the editor-in-chief of the magazine Expo and a leading expert on anti-democratic, right-wing extremist, and Nazi organizations. He died in 2004, shortly after delivering the manuscripts for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.

おそらく主人公が女を憎みこそしないが愛さない男だからであろう。しかし愛さなかったと過去形なのは腑に落ちない。主人公がこの先自分の娘を含めて女性たちと真剣に向き合うことはなさそうだ。いつの世にも女を愛さない男はいる。
主人公は権力者の圧力に屈して真実から目を背ける経済ジャーナリストを終始批判しているが、彼自身は自分に好意を寄せる女性にハッキングさせて得た情報により成功を収める。また図らずも40年近く前の少女失踪事件を捜査することになり、2時間ドラマ並みのストーリー展開で事件を解決するのだが、失踪していた女性の人生をこれ以上台無しにしたくはないと、明らかになった事実を誰にも口外しないと決意する。
真実の追求のためには多少の不法行為は許されるのか、人を傷つけてまで報道する価値のある真実とは一体何なのかなど、ジャーナリストとして心の葛藤があったとは思うが、その部分がほとんど描かれていないため、主人公は状況に応じて都合よく主義主張を変える極めて利己的な人間という印象しか持てなかった。
ジャーナリストらしい分かりやすい文章ではあるが、登場人物の心理状態を想像させる意味のある説明が極めて少ない。最後に主人公に共感できるような何かが起こるかと期待していたが、何も起こらず肩透かしをくらった気分。
続編も購入済みではあるが、今すぐ続きが読みたいとは思えなかった。
