Natalie Autostraddle ... Making queerness a five-to-ten minute segment at the very end, as if it wasn’t what we were talking about all along, was short sighted and leaves a bad taste on what was otherwise clearly a work of love and care. Aug 10, 2023 Full Review Carmen Phillips Autostraddle Ladies First brings some of these women, who are perhaps now primarily known as famous survivors of abuse, and instead reinstates them as being the experts and contributors who built hip-hop that they are. Aug 10, 2023 Full Review El Hunt London Evening Standard With so much male-dominated hip-hop history to set right, Ladies First has a big task on its hands, and largely pulls it off. Rated: 4/5 Aug 8, 2023 Full Review Shelli Nicole Vogue It’s a love letter, a sharing of history, and even a business plan by a group of Black women for the Black women—of all generations—who are watching. Oct 16, 2023 Full Review Martin Brown Common Sense Media But the astonishing thing about the documentary is that it doesn't simply retell history; it uses hip-hop as a way to discuss complex and critical issues that Black women face not only in the music industry, but in American culture at large. Rated: 4/5 Sep 5, 2023 Full Review Diego Jemio Clarín The series leaves you with a strong desire to run and listen to the music of these pioneers and current figures of the genre.
