Nature & Wildlife Areas
Vicar Water Country Park has had a fascinating and varied history before becoming a 78 hectare, Green Flag award winning green space. In the Middle Ages the Vicar Water stream was known as Warmebroke - "Warm Brook" before becoming Vicar Water. Vicar Water was dammed in 1870 by the 5th Duke of Portland creating Vicar Pond for use as a fishery to supply the lakes at Welbeck Abbey. In the early 1900's Vicar Pond was used for boating and swimming by soldiers posted at the nearby Clipstone Camp. In 1912, the 6th Duke of Portland leased the area around Vicar Pond known as Anne Bower Hill to the Bolsover Colliery Company and coal was reached in 1922 after a break due to the First World War. In 1976 coal ceased to be tipped around the immediate area around Vicar Pond and 10 hectares of woodland was planted. In 1982 Vicar Water Country Park officially opened with Newark and Sherwood District Council officially taking over ownership in 1992. The park doubled in size in 1999 after more reclamation work was undertaken on further areas of spoil tipping. In 2000 the Visitor Center opened and the park received its first Green Flag award, which it has received every year since. In more recent times the park has become an officially accredited Country Park through Natural England and provides a host of recreational activities including fishing, cycling, dog walking, wildlife watching, model boat sailing, and horse riding. There are 3 waymarked trails available free of charge from the visitor centre where there is also toilets and Rumbles café to purchase refreshments.

We loved it so much last month we booked again!
On arrival you are greeted by smiley, friendly reception staff who then show you to your pitch, answer all queries & give lots of advice about the local area.
We stayed on a fully serviced pitch which was tidy, spacious and had lovely views of the surrounding forest.
Spotless facilities, plenty of dog-bins, chemical drop, a small shop & playground.
This time we tried the visiting chip-van... Wouldn't go back but this is a separate business from the site so we don't hold them responsible for the worst fish & chips we've ever had.
We prefer adult only & dog friendly sites usually but considering the beautiful weather & amount of children present, we were not disturbed by the kids enjoying themselves, probably because there is so much for them to do. In fact my husband made the comment "it's nice to see so many children without a screen in their hands"!
Well done Sherwood Pines, you have it all!!

A nice morning trip for the family, the shops near by have beautiful things to browse, the visitor centre is good quality but slightly pricy. The staff are lovely and the walk to the great oak is very easy to follow.

A group of us visited the church before venturing to the Great Oak in the forest, we were lucky enough to find that in the church was a nice gentleman who gave us a tour and told us all about the history of the church, myths and legends of the area, he was very knowledgeable and made the visit very enjoyable and interesting, thank you very much, keep up the good work.

This is great place to chill out, and have a leisurely stroll in. The cafe on site are good too! One downfall is the uneasiness feeling when walking through in the evening as there are usually drug addicts hanging around (YMCA is close by) .

We visited the showroom and the owner Nick spent on request spent quite a considerable time telling us about the history of the pieces and is very knowledgable ,we purchased a nice piece and Nick was quite happy to talk a deal.
there are some beautiful things in the shop and you can be assured all genuine ,If you are looking for a statement piece or just a small Art deco item this is a fantastic place to go, if you are interested in this subject you could spend an hour just looking at the lovely things

My wife and I spent a morning looking round. Lots to see and a fair price offered by the owner. Manage to get a cup of tea. The venue is not heated so it was a bit on the cool side. Parking outside and toilets inside. Worth a look round.
