Mercurial Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood's second foray into film scoring (his haunting work on Paul Thomas Anderson's 2007 masterpiece There will Be Blood should have landed him an Oscar nomination) finds the budding composer in a much more plaintive state of mind. Based on the book by Japanese author Haruki Murakami, Norwegian Wood follows a love-lorn pair of college freshmen as they navigate the emotional wasteland of 1960’s Tokyo. Peppered by three tracks from Krautrock legends Can, Greenwood's score is largely string-based, with full orchestral arrangements that eventually give way to a simple string quartet. Dreamy, evocative, and distant, Norwegian Wood's tone resides far from the quivering, feedback-laden rage that fueled There Will Be Blood, but the minimalist attitude remains. Part Arvo Pärt and Part Brian Eno, Greenwood continues to impress.

In your panoramas...
Britpop in 10 Albums

“If punk was about getting rid of hippies, then I'm getting rid of grunge.” It was with this sentence from Damon Albarn in 1993 that England invaded the stage previously dominated by Nirvana and Seattle grunge. Britpop is deeply linked to politics and local identity and emerged just as Tony Blair and New Labour were entering the scene. English romanticism was once again becoming attractive compared to the American identity, which was considered too hollow in the UK. Make way for “Cool Britannia”.

Iggy and the Stooges: The Dawn of Punk

In 1969, a group of self-confessed cretins dynamited rock'n'roll with a charge of distortion and nihilistic lyrics. At the head of these Stooges was Iggy Pop, a sort of obsessive, rebellious Nijinsky, who was destined to become the Godfather of punk rock.

Stax, Sounds Like The South...

Motown in the North. And Stax in the South. Two quite distinct conceptions of soul music. In the southern humidity of Memphis, Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T and a few others invented a unique groove imbibed with blues and above all gospel.
