A Haiku-like text with the message that each person can become an agent of goodness and beauty With beautifully crafted words and exuberant watercolor illustrations, Random Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty offers a poetic and empowering message for world peace. Recognizing "we are right on the edge of destroying ourselves," this modern allegory inspires taking joyful steps to end violence. It expands upon the idea that "we are all in the circle together," and presents a timeless parable for readers of all ages. The Haiku-like text delivers a call to "make a new earth grow beneath our feet." In the playful style of 12th century Japanese picture scrolls, Mayumi Oda's art depicts humans as animals who lose their way when their leaders become confused and drawn to violence. It is up to each individual - the frog who plants a thriving garden, the cat who supports an elderly neighbor as they walk - to create a better world through simple acts of kindness. The message of this book is the sweet realization that each person can become an agent of goodness and beauty. This twentieth-anniversary, full-color edition, with a new foreword by venerable peacemaker Desmond Tutu, is dedicated to world peace and recovery in the face of world climate crises. All royalties will be donated to community resiliency across boundaries and antinuclear advocacy.

"We can indeed transform the world, and we are each called to take part in this sacred work. Random Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty offers this simple and powerful message of wisdom and hope. Wherever you are, you can create beauty. Moment by moment, you can create joy. Instant by instant, you can offer kindness." —Desmond Mpilo Tutu

"This exquisite book offers guidance to us all." —Alice Walker

"This is the real article, brought to us by streetwise bodhisattva, Anne Herbert, who authored the phrase you see on walls and bumperstickers, and Margaret Pavel, word wizard, systems thinker and global therapist, along with Dharma artist Mayumi Oda, whose wondrous frogs remind us that this time we awaken with all beings. Good things come in small packages. About as long as the Heart Sutra, it distills all we need to know right now in order to let our lives count in building a sustainable world." —Joanna Macy

“Wow! This book is amazing. The message is so important and relevant! I believe that we all have the power! I love the way this book sends this message of goodness to children. Children are the future and this book conveys HOPE! It is rich in language, thought provoking and positive.” —Marla Conn, Common Core Curriculum Standards assessment specialist

Basically a story of hope during times of war.If you/your child live in a sheltered, carefree, safe environment and want to keep it that way, then this is not the book for you as there are some graphic visuals in this book. But if you want to your child to be open minded about the world around them, or caught in a situation where there is war around you and you're powerless to have a say in the outcome of the war then this may be good book to be looking into. The book basically encourages empowerment and hope during times of war as it shows that you still can contribute to the good of society without getting directly involved in the war efforts.Visuals of this book good is really good. What you see on the cover, you can expect from the rest of the book.I recommend reading the 'Forward' of this book as it provide great context for the main storyBook may not be for everyone, but good book to build compassion towards civilians who are caught between war efforts

This is a book for your beginning reader to practice on. The words are simple and come one at a time. In addition, the illustrations are fun to look at again and again. After your reader has mastered the book, encourage them to keep reading it and finding the meaning from one page to the next... Having said that, I love the illustrator, Mayumi Oda. You should check out her website.

Beautiful illustrations. Simple, heartening and profound message.
I wanted to stay on to hear more of the story but it’s accessible and handy enough to take with…

Prophetic, hard hitting, incisive. Inspired by the life and work of the co-authors, I am no less enchanted by their book every time I read it. I cannot keep it on the shelf, it is my favorite book to share with people I want to reach from activists and opinion leaders to close friends and colleagues. Disarming in its beauty, devastating in its indictment of our current historical situation - buy this book if you want to Occupy your life, your community, our world with renewed vitality and conviction, a manifesto for our age.

Not my type of book at all. I gave it away. The drawings were particularly clumsy and unattractive. So I can't recommend it.
