Joseph Gordon-Levitt is an American actor whose career as both a child and adult has included television series and theatrical films.

He is known for his roles in the 2009 indie 500 Days of Summer (for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination), a supporting role in the 2010 science fiction film Inception, and for starring in the 2011 drama 50/50. Some time ago, I found this tiny little story online and it gave me a weird but wonderful feeling. Forgive the cliche, but it was a butterflies in the stomach kind of feeling. A flutter. It made me smile.

It was only very recently that I discovered that there is not one, but THREE books of these tiny stories. Not all of them have the quiet power that this one has, but many of them do. Each is a sentence or two of story, accompanied by an illustration of some kind. Some of them are funny. Some of them are dark. Some of them are romantic. They're really quite delightful to read.

Given everyone's love of Sarah Andersen and the short, meme-style poetry that's in vogue these days, I'm really surprised more people haven't read these books.

Page-length stories that range from endearing to clever to heart-wrenching, all collaborations. I'm just a little bit in love.

I pre ordered it. I got it in the mail. I opened it. I read it instead of eating lunch. Then I tore up the box and stuffed the cardboard pieces into business reply envelopes from credit card offers so the companies have to give more money to the postal service. I'm excited about every step in this process!

Okay I just read this book in 20 minutes, and I read it fully. it's micro stories and it deserves 5 stars.

1. the stories are freaking amazing, 2. the illustrations are freaking amazing, 3. you should read it, before or after you read mark hodder I'm not particular given it's shortness.

I was going to do this review like my other micro stories review but when I started marking stories I was marking every page so I was like "that's no good" so I was going to open to a random page and give you that story, but I got to the last page and oh, that is the story I am going to share with you:

If I read our story backwards, it's about how I un-broke your heart, and then we were happy until one day, you forgot about me completely.

This was a surprise! It was actually quite lovely, and cute, and witty and dark, all at once. There are suicidal eggs, left out elements (the element of surprise) from the cool kid table (of elements) There was a little girl arguing with a little boy that it is HER-O, not HE-RO as he claims. There were dark ominous creatures and beautiful trees. It was whimsical and clever, and I am glad I stumbled across this in my Goodreads perusing.

This is a fairly twee and in many ways adorable book produced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt's hitRECord open-collaborative creative arts company. The book's cover boasts that it features "67 contributors from the 8,569 contributions on the Tiny Stories collaboration on hitRECord.org." Contributions are both very, very tiny stories (never more than two sentences) and black-and-white hand drawings. The concept itself is to take online submissions, under online user names like wirrow (the main architect) and Metaphorest and RegularJoe (the handle for Gordon-Levitt himself) and publish them. The book sells for about $15 and promises that all profits will be split 50/50 between hitRECord and the collaborators themselves.

The concept is more intriguing than the book, really, which is not to say it doesn't have its pleasures. The drawings and caption-like stories give the book a childish feel, even if a few of the lines -- "Thunder always let lightning come first!" -- sneak in like the dirty jokes someone overheard from his father (in 1950). The overall theme of Tiny Book is one of being -- and trying to be -- delightful, and the book wouldn't feel out of place on a shelf of slightly older children's stories. ("The mumble bee had a fuzzy buzz. Whenever he tried to say 'honey,' it came out all funny.")

This slim volume has the feeling of a summer camp collaboration -- full of partially hidden wit (and probably some in-jokes), nostalgia, and earnest observations made brilliant by the love of fellow collaborators. Basically, it's a little hard for outsiders to fully appreciate, but I'd guess that the 67 contributors (and their thousands of other friends) probably get two or three levels of enjoyment out of seeing their work in print. A new edition -- an annual edition -- is supposed to be printed again next year.

It's not likely a book that would have seen the market without the support of a well-known artist, a fact I'd feel a bit more callous about mentioning if RegularJoe didn't manage to show up as at least a co-contributor in 12 of the 70 some contributions throughout the book. As vanity projects go, though, this is a particularly cute one, and the concept of encouraging further collaboration and creativity online is admirable. Two tiny thumbs up.

Disclaimer: I received this book for free to review it.

“The universe is not made up of atoms; it’s made up of tiny stories.”

It’s a great beginning to a very tiny book. The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories: Volume 1 by hitRECord and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Actually, the great beginning was the end paper. It’s full of tiny drawings and all the detail and work that went into it are just amazing.

Then, there are the stories — they are truly tiny. Maybe a sentence or two, with a drawing to go with them. They are sad and funny and wonderful.

My favorite, which I have stolen for a tagline on my favorite forum, reads:

“Okay, I’ll admit, I have a few skeletons in my closet; but they weren’t skeletons when I put them there.”

They’re all like that — little gems that you want to read out loud and share with people. The book is tiny enough that you can read it at a long stoplight, but you’ll be smiling for much, much longer, remembering it.

The book is from hitRECord, a collaborative art project. It’s a production company where people log in, upload their stuff, the directors combine it with other cool stuff or the artists grab the cool stuff and remix it. When they get something they think is finished, they sell it, like The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories, and split the profits 50/50 with the collaborators.

Now, I consider myself a creative person, but I don’t think you’ll find my kind of creativity (my book reviews, my knitting, my recipes) on their site. But I think it’s a terrific idea and I am more than happy to lend my voice to it here. (I’m also happy to buy cute stuff on their website — put your credit card where your mouth is.)

I had very high expectations on this book, not because of the name printed on the front (Joseph Gordon-Levitt that is), but because I love the plain idea of a collaborate book consisting of works by different people. I genuinely believe this idea is a good way of sharing art, because it shows that the range of imagination is so vast. And the first sentence is just fantastic: "The universe is not made of atoms; it's made of tiny stories.

Although I didn't read the psysical book I did watch the read along on Youtube (here). And I must be honest - some stories were really great (therefore the rating), but too many were 'meh' or - to put it bluntly - not that good at all. So yes, the variyng quality is my biggest objection. But overall I thought it was charming, well-blended and witty. I'll definitely check out the second book.

The Short of It:

A short, snappy little book filled with creativity.

The Rest of It:

When I first heard about this little gem, I knew I had to read it for myself. HitRECord, founded by Joseph Gordon-Levitt (3rd Rock from the Sun, Inception, 10 Things I Hate About You) reviewed contributions from thousands of writers and artists to create this collection. The stories are only one or two pages long. Some are humorous, some of thought-provoking but the real challenge here is telling a story in just one or two pages complete with illustrations.

The book itself is very well done. It would make a fabulous gift and honestly speaking, the writing is pretty clever, too. I also enjoyed the illustrations. When it came in the mail, The Girl took off with it thinking it was for her. She read about half of the stories and then asked if she could keep it. Uh, no. Maybe later, like after I’ve read it! So you see, it’s a tasty little morsel.

Aside from all the fun of reading a book like this, I think it’s important for people to be able to feel as if they have a creative outlet. Often, we want to be creative but the process often seems too difficult or overwhelming. If you are an artist who would like to contribute works for volume 2, check out the web site.

I was initially drawn to this book by the cover and its small, compact size (and, let's be honest, by Joseph Gordon-Levitt's name on the cover).

This book is a collection of SHORT stories (each story is only a line or two) paired with a variety of beautiful illustrations (Joseph Gordon-Levitt has not written any of these stories, rather he is the director of the project. More information about the project can surely be found at hitrecord.org).

The wonder of this collection is that each story feels like it captures the essence of a longer story or novel with just a few words. They open up thoughts. They inspire. They are filled with feeling. They are fun.

I loved this collection.

Here is a sample (and one of my favorite stories in the book):

"One day before breakfast, an orange rolled off the counter and escaped its fate, bounding happily through the kitchen door. Filled with hope, the egg followed."

The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories, Volume 1 is a wonderful little collection of stories. The tiny stories look beautiful alongside the imaginative and original illustrations. My favourite Tiny Story is above, and my second favourite is here:
His hands were weak and shaking
from carrying far too many
books from the bookshop.

It was the best feeling.
I didn't read this tiny book of tiny stories in the traditional way, instead I listened to it. Thanks to Jeffrey from GingerBookNerd on YouTube I was able to read the story. If you're interested, here is the link to his video: https://goo.gl/7P8s61
It's quite short, and definitely worth the time!

So, basically people have uploaded art and little quirky poems and turns of phrase to his site, and he picked these! I also think some people added edits to others, so each work was continually being changed over and over so some pages have like ten "authors"/"artists".

I would recommend this to anyone. If you can't find something to smile at or that makes you feel understood...check your pulse. I just thought it was such an interesting idea! How beautiful that hundreds of people are collaborating and sharing this art--and the profit. :) Some are sad and reflective, some are goofy, some are very well written, some I found to be stupid....but it's a great way to spend ten minutes. They truly gave me a feeling of peace and happiness in a a way that no book has in a while. Simple concept, easy read... but what more can you want from a book than ten minutues of peace and insight on being human? Can't wait for the next book.

I'll admit up front that part of the reason I wanted to review this is because it was associated with Joseph Gordon-Levitt who I love as an actor. But, also, the book sounded so unique. This book is essentially a compilation of the contributions to Gordon-Levitt's production company hitRECord where artists of all types tell tiny, but impactful, stories utilizing a combination of words and art.

The book is actually tiny and adorable. I read it as soon as it came in the mail, and it took me about 5-10 minutes. I then handed it over to my husband who read through and enjoyed it as well. Some of the stories are better than others, but overall it was a fun read. It's one of those where you appreciate the story told because of its wit as well as for the artwork that goes with it. I don't know that I would spend the listed $14.99 on it for myself, but as a gift for someone who's the creative type or maybe even as a conversational piece for the home or office I would. It is definitely charming.

I must start off by explaining that I adore JGL way too much for my own good. And thus may be absolutely biased in shooting off all the praise that I am about too.

The Tiny Book of Tiny Stories is a collection of short illustrations depicting poignant, witty and endearing stories, sent in by people all over the world. It would take you hardly half an hour to read the book for the first time, but I feel it is a book one must keep coming back to, especially if you're reading it to a child.

A quick, entertaining and smartly written read that stays on your mind long after reading it.

Shreya does a much better job reviewing it. So head on over there

An exquisite book and a beautiful read!

The tiny book of tiny stories comprises over 60 stories (which are mainly a couple of lines long, mottos and various other sayings) which range from the silly (see tea party sketch), the bittersweet (see orange and egg), the human condition (just before I died) and other worlds (one night your walls).

This collection is accompanied by some wonderful illustrations which adds another dimension to the printed words.

It's also lovely to see how a famous actor can collaborate with the wider community, producing a book you can carry around in your pocket/bag and read over and over again.

This book demands to be read by those wanting something quirky yet true yet fantastical. A tiny gem of a tiny book.

Its obviously a quick read, and I finished it in maybe ten minutes max, but it was a ten minutes well spent. These stories really are tiny, anywhere from a couple words to a few sentences and that's it. However to me at least, this tiny little book packed a punch. Some of the stories were sad, some laugh out loud funny, others hopeful; this book includes them all.

I bought this as a gift for a few of my friends: birthdays or as a token to cheer them up, and they've raved about it so much that I had to get a copy of it myself. And gosh, did I love the stories. It's a whole combination of sorrow, happiness, hopefulness, witticism , comedy and more-- all the human thoughts and emotions woven together in a string of words and art.

If you love illustrations and and small sentences that pack an emotional punch, this is the book for you. It's a must.

If you enjoy storytelling and collaborative artforms, THE TINY BOOK OF TINY STORIES volume 1 is a treasure waiting to be discovered.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt (yes, the actor) is the director of hitRECord, an "open-collaborative production company," which encourages anyone to contribute "records" (creative content) that others can use in collaborative projects, some of which get produced and sold. They split profits 50/50 with contributors, and use their cut to finance more projects.

Their latest production is this book, which is a delightful collection of tiny stories (natch) paired with whimsical illustrations. The stories will make you smile, laugh, groan, and think.

The book really is tiny, too; smaller than your average paperback, yet with a hardcover: perfect for slipping in your bag and taking out to share a story and a smile. I got no further than the third story before I was sharing with co-workers passing by, and giggling throughout.

The best part is the subtitle: volume 1. That means there will be more! Perhaps you will be inspired to contribute to the next volume.

My favorite bits from this short collection:

description
“The sun is such a lonely star.

Whenever he comes out to see his friends, they disappear.”

description
“Well, look who I ran into,” crowed Coincidence.

“Please”, flirted Fate, ‘this was meant to be.”

“The doctor’s wife ate two apples a day, just to be safe.

But her husband kept coming home.”

A hand-to-heart, breathless sigh kind of book.

I should start a "simple is best" bookshelf. (Nevermind, I just did.)

This is one where the pictures can't live without the text and the text can't live without the pictures because they make each other better.

Nonetheless, here are my Favorite Quotes...

In winter, when the leaves
have gone, the owls swoop in
to keep the trees warm.

If I read our story backwards,
it's about how I un-broke
your heart, and the we were
happy until one day, you
forgot about me forever.
