The lazy river and pools were all in great shape, overall facilities were nicely kept. We will return to Destin west but will not rent osprey 603 again.
Five of us shared the condo and we had plenty of room. The kitchen was beautiful and well equipped.
If you like to stay right on the beach, there are condos facing the beautiful gulf.
There are plenty of restaurants and shops close by.
A great place to stay.
The resort was great, just as it was our first October trip in 2016. The pools were clean, property was nice, staff was friendly except for one of the pool patrol guys who genuinely seemed to be a jerk regularly while we were there and a front desk gentleman who blew me off when I called to report room damage, but I’ll get to that in a minute. The resort and the amenities are beautiful. My children loved being able to go onto the back patio and see the lazy river at night, as well as being so close to the pool and lazy river. We spent many nights and afternoons in the lazy river and very much enjoyed ourselves. The beach was great.
My only complaint with the resort itself comes from the pool patrol guy and the front desk gentleman. I called down to report the room damage we had found, which included- a broken picture hanging from the wall in the guest bathroom that we were afraid the glass would fall out of, the bar stools had broken legs (these had been shoddily repaired at some point and my 3 year old fell off when the stool collapsed) which left us with barely enough seating for the family, dining room chairs with legs so loose that it nearly collapsed (I didn’t mind tightening this), a fair amount of broken glass on the patio that I had to sweep up (very lucky I found it before the children found it with their feet) and the patio grill (which was a main reason I chose this particular lenai) didn’t work. The handle was broken off and placed inside the grill, the ignited was broken and it had been left so dirty that there was a large quantity of mold inside of it. When I called the front desk I was assured maintenance would be sent up but they never arrived. I have to wonder if he even told maintenance as I witnessed him blow off another guest as I was checking in.
The room did have positives. The beds were comfortable, the unit was clean, kitchen was very well stocked (plenty of pots/pans/dinnerware). It was in need of some updates but was still comfortable. The double patio was perfect for the kids when they wanted to go out and run around.
Will I return to the resort? Absolutely. Will I stay in this unit again? I’m not sure. If my complaints were addressed then I don’t see why not.
We look forward to our 2018 vacation.
(I feel like I need to give 2 reviews; 1 for the resort and 1 for the room. Knowing that the rooms are individually owned, one may be better than another. But since we booked directly with the resort, I'll do my best to put 2 reviews in 1 post.)
The Room:
When you enter PH01, the master is what you see 1st, as it is right off of the entrance when you walk in. The furniture is nice, but the carpet was awful. The carpet needs to be replaced desperately! You only get 1 chance to make a 1st impression, right? Please...replace the carpet in the master!
The linens are old and tired. And for the love of the next visitor's sanity, please do something about the mattresses! There is something to be said when the pull-out sofa is the most comfortable bed in the Penthouse! The mattresses in the bunkroom were so bad that I ended up taking the cushions from the sofa and putting them under the fitted sheet in an effort to give my 16 year old a decent night's sleep. By then, the "bed" was so high, the space b/w the bottom of the top bunk and where she was sleeping was so tiny, we had to laugh, it was "Princess and the Pea" style! Those bunk beds are the equivalent of sleeping on a stack of bricks, no joke.
What was worse than the comfort of the bunkbeds is the fact that they allow smoking on the balcony (and other places throughout the resort). I might've been able to handle this if it wasn't for the fact that my "neighbors" smoked like a chimney. I am not exaggerating, EVERY time I went to the balcony, they were smoking. 3 of them, 1 at a time, so it was a steady stream of cigarette smoke right at me. 7am for coffee? Smoking. Noon? Smoking. 9pm for an evening cocktail? Smoking! I get it, people smoke and I don't, and I am probably a little more sensitive to it than the average person, but when you spend your hard-earned money on your vacation, I don't know about you but I want to enjoy it and relax a little! It was really a big downfall and unfortunate because it kindof sets the tone for the stay. Maybe just have designated smoking areas away from the living quarters, I don't know. But...beware, if you don't care much for smoking, it IS allowed at the resort AND on the balcony.
There was also a nice front balcony away from everything else (and the smoking) and it was nice however, the cushions for the furniture were 1/2 missing and the other 1/2 needed to be replaced. 3 McDonald's napkins folded up would have provided more cushion than the remaining ones on the front balcony. It was however still my preferred place to sit though!
The master bath was ok, there is a giant jetted soaking tub but there is no way I would put my self down in that ~ after seeing the state of the carpet, you can't help but wonder if anything else has been cleaned thoroughly. There is a shower curtain on a rod that fell down every time you touched it and we didn't have hot water in the smaller (2nd) bath, so essentially 5 of us were sharing 1 bathroom. It finally had hot water on our last day there.
There is a coffee maker but...no filters or coffee. There might be now, since I bought a pack and left it there, because I don't need 150 coffee filters at home but hopefully the next person can use it! I don't expect it to be stocked with food and drinks but it would have been nice to not have to find a place to go buy an entire pack of filters and a can off coffee to make 3 days worth of morning java.
The Resort:
My vote on Destin West Beach and Bay Resort is that it is average, not bad, not fantastic. The resort was clean, the pools are nice, the skybridge is a great convenience and you can use it to walk and get food at a multitude of establishments. The resort does not have a restaurant but there is one across the skybridge at the Ramada. They offer a breakfast buffet for about $11 and it had a nice assortment of food. The resort itself is nice, the lazy river is what sold me on this location when choosing where to stay. But with older kids (16 & 13 plus our 17 year old exchange student), it wasn't enough to make me want to come back. Also, right next door is a gas station (Tom Thumb) which is nice when you need to get milk, mimosa ingredients, coffee and filters, etc, if you need something quick. Otherwise, there is a WalMart and a Target just a few miles down the road. We also got a very good price on our stay and I don't want to overlook the fact that every single staff person I encountered was VERY helpful and VERY pleasant.
In my opinion, if Sandpiper PH01 would spend a little bit of money in replacing the carpet, pillows and mattresses, it would have probably outweighed the negatives for me. But with the good and the not so good collectively, I will probably look elsewhere for a place to stay on my next trip to Destin.
