Bronson and Mason play a high stakes game of cat and mouse . . . and only one man can walk away the winner

During the Korean War, Joe Moran, is convicted for striking a colonel. Imprisoned in Germany he encounters his former company commander Captain Ross, jailed for black marketeering. Together with Ross' cohorts Joe agrees to escape with them, but things go wrong and a policeman is killed. An appalled Joe escapes by himself, abandoning the others, who are recaptured. Years later Joe has a boat rental business where he is found by Ross. Now a wanted drug smuggler he wants the use of Joe's boats and to ensure his cooperation, they kidnap his wife and daughter.

After Once Upon A Time In The West, Charles Bronson was a big name in Europe. He made a few films there, one being Cold Sweat a low budget slow paced action flick packed full of people you would not imagine being in something like this.
American ex patriot Bronson has to rescue his kidnapped wife Liv Ulman (Yes, that Liv Ulman.) She and her daughter are being held by Bronson's old military unit lead by James Mason, (Probably wondering how he went from Lolita to this.) and including Luigi Pistilli.
Bronson's wife Jill Ireland is there to because, you know nepotism.

A 70’s Bronson I saw more due to me knowing the film for many years rather than critical/viewer opinion. About 1/6 of his films I’ve talked about here on Letterboxd yet I’m always happy for more. Long ago I first heard of this movie and for all this time it was a very easy movie to track down and view; it’s just that the copies were usually of poor quality. At first you think this is going to be a proto-"John Wick," with Charles Bronson as a boat captain living a quiet life with his family off the coast of France until his criminal past comes back to haunt him...but it's like 1970 didn't quite have the vocabulary for this kind of action film yet, so "Cold Sweat" relies on traditional Hitchcockian suspense, and the whole affair feels far too staged and talky, particularly coming from the director of "From Russia with Love"! Case in point: Bronson never once uses a shotgun like he's holding on the poster art.
There's admittedly some novelty to seeing two actors of the caliber of Liv Ullmann and James Mason wind up in a Charles Bronson vehicle, but they're not well served by this material. My pulse quickened during a late film car chase, but that's about it. (And there's a similar car chase in 71's "The Last Run," a much better movie).

Cold Sweat could be a lost gem: ‘International thrillers’ were popular in this period and this one had a director who knew how to deliver them: Terence Young had directed three Bond movies in the past ten years. Cold Sweat also had the dramatic locations in the South of France and the required multinational cast–principally Charles Bronson, Liv Ullmann and James Mason.
Sometimes things don’t work out so well. Cold Sweat is a dud. Although the story is based on a novel by Richard Matheson, the adaptation is so cliched and dull that there is very little to keep things interesting. The movie is short, but it drags on.

Liv Ullmann in a Bronson Joint? Yes please. Surprisingly more interesting than I thought it would be, even without a ton of action. I was never really bored throughout. Bronson is the usual stone cold badass and it’s always nice to see Luigi Pistilli. There’s a damn good chase scene towards the end. Highly recommend if you’re a Bronson guy like myself.

Chaz Bronson as an American living the good life in France, until he has to face his past: drug dealers who invade his home and kidnap his family. Bold move by the baddies, because Charles looks like he can strangle each and every one of them with his pinky finger. Action, thrills and suspense in the beautiful French Riviera, but despite it being directed by someone who did three Bond flicks and the presence of a pretty awesome cast (hi, Jill!), it never becomes something special. I liked the villain, Katanga. Ruthless guy. Even his name sounds scary. And there's a car chase, which makes it mandatory viewing for fans of those. I expected a little more of it, especially after a thrilling start. Decent filler though.

The Fourth Summer of Scam
There are a couple of inexcusable things about Cold Sweat, which is otherwise a nice bit of brawn from the always engaging Terence Young.
For a start, I think I could have lived quite happily never having heard James Mason attempt an American accent. I can see why he chose to bust it out for a film not many people went to see or cared for though - he doesn't want to be exposing that appalling effort in something people might have wanted to see.
