“This is Animal Kingdom,” executive producer John Wells chuckled to TVLine back in 2019, when the TNT drama killed off Ellen Barkin’s viperish Smurf. “We don’t expect anybody to be alive by the time we get to the end.” (Revisit that interview here.)
Nonetheless, at least a couple of key characters managed to emerge from the series’ sixth and last season finale with their hearts still beating. It wasn’t easy, what with Craig and Deran setting in motion what was arguably the thieves’ most impossible crime ever — breaking big brother Pope out of jail — at the same time as J was stabbing his uncles in the back. But two of the Codys did get out alive. Which ones? Keep reading, and we’ll go over all the episode’s gory details. Then you can let loose in the comments with your reviews of the show’s send-off, the season and the series as a whole.
As “FUBAR” began, so did J’s double cross. Rather than help Deran and Craig exchange fire with the cops as they extricated Pope from the prison transfer bus — not to mention the clutches of a vengeful inmate — J made tracks back to Smurf’s house. There, he used a burner phone to tip off the authorities to the location of the storage unit where his uncles had stashed their cash and heavy artillery as well as the getaway cars that they’d soon discover had flats.
When the cops paid J a visit, he made a reluctant Penny his alibi — a twist that so shook her, she decided that she wasn’t going to run away with loverboy after all. In response, he fatally dosed her cocktail. And although we all know that J’s a stone-cold killer — right, Mia? Morgan? — he wept after she died and trashed the house, no doubt picturing his grandmother’s face with every swing of the bat.
Back in the desert, Pope, Craig and Deran broke into a house as sirens grew louder and louder. The Codys were going to be outgunned — big time. What could they do? Pope would draw the cops’ fire, he said, while Craig and Deran got the hell outta there. It was the only (sniffle) play they had. Knowing that Pope was on a suicide mission, his kid brothers hugged him as if it was the last time that they were ever going to see him. But he insisted, “We’re gonna be all right… I’ll come find you.”
In fact, Pope did survive, taking out all of the cops as only a series lead possibly could. At the same time, Craig and Deran held up a convenience store to score some cash and a first-aid kit. In the process, Craig was shot by the owner’s child. Deran sobbed that Craig was going to be OK, but no. He was not. As he slipped away, Deran vowed to take care of Renn and raise Nick like the baby was his own.
Once he’d made his way back to Smurf’s house in a stolen car, Pope choked out J, then tied him up in a chair poolside. “You set us up to die!” Pope screamed when his nephew came to. J wasn’t remorseful. On the contrary, he felt more than justified in betraying his family. “You deserve it,” he spat, “all of you, for what you did to my mom. You could’ve saved her, but you didn’t.”
After sending J into the deep end, Pope couldn’t help but recall the day that Smurf had told a pregnant Julia she was taking her back to rehab… when in reality, she was dumping her under the bridge with the other junkies. Julia had begged her twin to come with her, but he had been too weak to stand up to their mother. So, he concluded in the present, he really was to blame for everything.
With the weight of all that misplaced guilt bearing down on him, Pope saved J from drowning and let him go. Then Pope set the house on fire, laid down by the pool and died. The last thing he saw? That old photo of himself and Julia, baby-faced kids tangled in their vile mother’s web. (Read what EP Daniele Nathanson has to say about what happened — and most definitely didn’t happen — here.)
In the episode’s — as well as the series’ — final seconds, we got a glimpse of J, all alone but living in the lap of luxury. In the end, he really had succeeded in taking everything that was Smurf’s the way that he swore he would seasons earlier. But at what cost? At what cost?

J was on a mission not just for a better life but to mainly get revenge for Baz and Julia. His Parents!!! Wrought in H$&@ Smurf! Feel bad for Craig, never got to see his son grow. 😢

There’s a scene earlier in the episode where Darren is removing stacks of cash out of the safe in his bar, so he does have money. Still a long shot that he’s going to A. Not get caught/ killed by the cops, B. Make it safely to Thailand, although they did make it a point to show him removing the cash, thus making it at least a possibility.
It was nit revenge for Baz, that coward turned on Julia instantly and did not treat J well.
J didn’t care about Baz at all, and Julia stated that she didn’t know who J’s father was.
Yes and it was year later that she came back (Pope said Smurf threw out her stuff “last year”) so the father probably wasn’t Baz. So glad not Pope. He was just the best character. His previews said the fans would like the ending – NOT!

I absolutely loved this series and as much as I loved it I hated to see it end. When Craig and Pope died I cried like they were my own brothers! This show gripped me so tight that I wasn’t watching the show, I was in it. This was the one show on my PVR that I couldn’t wait to watch! What am I going to do with my Monday nights now?!?
I completely agree. I felt every emotion Deran, Craig, and Pope felt, as if we were split from the same egg. No matter what Smurf said, Baz was never “a real Cody”. Julia wanted to be in the family only when it served her purposes and had no qualms about stealing from her mother — in other words, she was a lot like Smurf without the backbone of steel. Its no mystery from where J inherited his high intelligence and lack of empathy. Julia was strung out on heroin; J was strung out on revenge. Pope, Craig, and Deran were all twigs bent by Smurf; she would hurt any of them badly whenever they tried to veer off her course.
It will take time to get over the deaths or disappearance of my three beautiful brothers. I hope Deran lives long enough to see J turned into someone’s “girlfriend”.
Are you kidding? Smurf used little Julia & Andrew all their lives to do her dirty work. So Julia takes a little cut & Smurf tosses her out with nothing, twice! Not even caring that she was pregnant. She derved way more from the soul-less mother she unfortunately had. Smurf always favoured Andrew.
I completely disagree that Julia wanted to be in the family only when it served her purposes. She had no qualms stealing from Smurf, because Smurf destroyed her life and she saw Smurf for who she was – a narcissistic sociopath who cared only about herself. Smurf told Julia that she was expelled from school when that wasn’t true. Smurf forced Julia into submission. As smart and strong as Julia was, she was still just a teenager and no match for Smurf’s manipulations. Smurf tried to keep Julia down every chance she got. Julia never had a chance. If Smurf had supported her, Julia would never had become a heroin addict. Smurf clearly hated Julia, because she knew she couldn’t control her. Everyone in that family betrayed Julia.
Throughout the series Smurf did not like any woman I can think of, including her daughter. She got rid of all the females and kept the males around. She was jealous of any other females around her sons. Remember Baz’ daughter, can’t recall her name but even her Smurf removed from their lives.

The finale for animal kingdom was always going to be hard to handle no matter how it ended as we, the viewing audince are not ready to say goodbye to the Cody boys.

This series finale was just what the title said FUBAR! Not happy at all! They also kept us guessing for NO REASON about this original sin idea. Anyway, very very very disappointed in how they ended the show. The show deserved better than to basically do the movie. Ugh!
The show ended perfectly. It brought full circle the attention as to what J proclaimed dince the beginning, getting his revenge. He swore to Smurff while she slept that he would take everything from her to avenge his mom. He did it. Did it cost him? Everything. The writers did an amazing job pulling at our heartstrings with constantly hoing back and forth to show us how Smurff manipulated and pinned Julia and Andrew together. She was the evil in everything and she tainted all their lives for the worse. She manipulated ALL of them their entire lives. Andrew did leave Julia to her fate and he redeemed himself with her by letting J go. The ending was perfect because it was raw and true. Not everything ends happily and perfect. J surviving doesn’t mean he will be happy. His guilt and remorse may get the best of him at some point but in that moment he avenged his mother from the evil that was Smurff. Craig dying was sad but also cherry. If only Pope died, it wouldn’t be as impacting and honest. Most of the family was gone by the end because of their lifestyles and selfish ways. I think the show ended as it should’ve as much as we rooted for their survival, they ended going out as they should’ve, doing what they do best.

It really pulled on my heart because I cried when Craig and Pope died 💔 😢. The show was bloody awesome and I’m so sad it ended the way it did because I would of loved to see revenge on J!.

I had ALWAYS been rooting for J. I am happy he was alive but his life will most likely be sad & empty & plagued with guilt. Money does not bring happiness. I loved all the characters. They were truly believable in their roles.

Just because people (myself included) liked the characters and many had their moments of kindness, at the end of the day ALL of them were stone cold killers. ALL of them executed anyone that got in their way. Humanity or not, It’s fitting they died by the hand of one of their own. It all rolled downhill from Smurf.

Well. Damn. As I expected it would end like the movie J & Deran surviving. But J is ultimate winner. He TOOK EVERYTHING!! Pope finally admitted that it was all his fault, he failed Julia big time, when really Smurf FAILED ALL OF THEM by not giving a damn. The way Pope & Craig went out was really sad, plus {notice} they died with the same type of gun shot wound? Overall I’m gonna miss this show…..it was a hell of ride!!👏

He was stabbed in prison, then reopened his incision to insert the tracking chip, THEN opened it again to take it back out. He bled out (Same as Craig) and that’s what killed him.

Let’s be honest, there’s no way Deran makes it out of the country after all that. I think after Craig and Pope’s death, they wanted to leave a more open-ended ending for him to end on a more hopeful note.
It’s possible. He just needs to lay low for a bit and change his appearance. Billy has connections for fake IDs etc. If someone were to hide him he could get away. No one aside of family knew that Billy’s his dad so it could work. He was clearly an absentee father, but I believe he does care about his son.

Exactly, no t.v. show is real, can be based on real events. The reason we like to give the what ifs is because if a show is as good as animal kingdom was, even when it’s over we hope to see more with a possible spin off. So many great series ended with us wanting more or upset the loyalty we showed for years, it could have ended better or with more hope to see our fav characters again. Look at Lost for who ever watched it, the ending was an insult to viewers! Everyone was dead, they were in purgatory! Writers didn’t have to explain any of the cool insane stuff they had happen on the show 😡 I will miss animal kingdom a lot, what a great ride!

This was a fabulous series and am sad it ended, but they did a great job tying up any of the loose ends. As someone else said…hopefully we’ll see Deran find J in a future movie or series and I hope he goes and finds Adrian now!

Deran didn’t die., so either you don’t know the show very well, or you were just overcome with grief over Craig & Pope dying. The ending was one version the tragedy it always had to be given the FUBAR world Smurf created since before they were all even born.

My father was a US Army sergeant in the 70’s and early 80’s and “FUBAR” was a familiar term often heard around my house when I was a child. But as it was always defined to me, the “R” in the word was for “Recognition” rather than “Repair”.
I’m glad to hear from someone else who hated seeing J get away unscathed. Most of the commenters here seem to be pleased.
I absolutely hated the way this was written, and would like to re-write it. My version would be very different.
It seems implausible that the three brothers, plus Penny, would be so gullible and trusting. I had been hoping that at least one of them had a plan in place to foil J. But nope.
Yes I agree. I loved the show, hated the finale. I also would have written it completely different. I thought for sure, Billy’s warnings got through to Deran about J. J was a little piece of s***. His beef was with Smurf, not his uncles. They took him in and trusted him. I was so hoping they were on to his scheme and had a back up plan that would be revealed. When it became clear that wasn’t the case, I hoped Pope would choke him out but not before getting him to transfer the money back to their accounts. Then I hoped he’d reunite with Deran and Craig, the three of them would survive and ultimately Craig would make it back to Renn and Nick, while Deran and Pope would get to Indonesia and maybe there’d be a beach scene where Deran would surprise Adrian. They could have input all the twists and turns and danger and still let the boys have a happy ending. And of course killing that piece of s*** J. Now THAT, would have been a great ending and very satisfying. J was a psychopath, he was the only one who killed without regret and remorse, beginning with the lawyer he killed early on. This finale was very disappointing and sad. Kudos to the actors but the writers really didn’t know what they were doing. Very disappointed, and will really miss the show. Pope was my absolute favorite, followed by Craig and Deran. They all should have survived.

I agree with your comments. I was so upset the way the writers handled the finale. First, they made sure this season that everyone would despise Smurf. Also, they let that little weasel J live. He killed Smurf, he killed Morgan, he killed Mia, he killed Craig, he killed Pope and he killed Penny. His vendetta was with Smurf, not the rest of them, he’s a little psychopath and I despise him more than anyone on this show. I hope after that last scene, he gets up to head for dinner and gets run over by a bus, leaving his punk azz a mangled, disfigured mess and that he lives ..but in pain and agony and has to rely on caregivers, who then rob him. I hope he dies shortly thereafter, in a lot of physical pain because as we know, unlike the Cody boys, he has absolutely no conscience. I don’t think it was Deran, Craig, Pope or Smurf’s responsibility to get Julia clean and off drugs. She needs to be held accountable for her own actions. I know a lot of people mentioned how Smurf kept her from going to school…ummm..from what I could tell, Julia did what she wanted and went where she wanted, if she really wanted to go back to school, she could have enrolled herself back in school. Apparently, Smurf did send her to rehab, but she slept around and got pregnant and went back to drugs…and then proceeded to rob her own family. She then went on to raise herself a cold-blooded little psycho who killed everyone she so-called loved. I don’t believe a word that comes out of J’s mouth. He’s a murderous POS.
They all treated J like dirt from the beginning. I loved the uncles and was hoping J would become a true family member with them but honestly he went through 5 seasons of being an outcast. They also all turned their backs on Julia when they should have tried to help her. Not sure how Julia was supposed to turn out with the way Smurf raised she and Pope. J’s revenge wasn’t bittersweet, he plotted payback just to end up miserable and alone. I didn’t understand why he had to kill Penny, guess he took after his uncle Pope after all.

They basically established that Deran was so young when Julia left that he really wasn’t close to her. Deran was the only one that never had a conversation about Julia to J.
I can understand why J wanted revenge on Smurf for what she did to his mother, but still…he’s part of the family and as someone who believes in “death before dishonor”, it didn’t sit well with me that he survived.

I truly hope Deran made it out of the country to at least let Renn know what happened and that Craig’s last words were about her & Renn. I think Deran would go to Billy for help getting out of the country-Billy had connections & could get cash.
J and Penny….wow. I just knew he was going to kill her….but at least he seemed to actually love her in his way. He should have manned up though and let her live. I’m torn about J surviving. I get his motives and where the hate came from….but I wanted him punished. Maybe being all alone with no one is punishment enough. He definitely did not look happy!

My best friend and I have watched from the beginning. We talked about how it would end yesterday. We made a list and a bet. Whomever gets the most predictions right–has to buy the other one dinner. I won. The only thing I got wrong was they were all going to die and J would be the one left standing. But Deran survived too. This show was so bat$hit crazy. I was rooting for J, up until the point where he sliced that lady’s leg and threw her in the water for the sharks would get it. But early on I knew he resented the Cody’s for the exact reason he told Pope. Julia was their family and none of them checked on her. She was a drug addict with a kid. J had a hard childhood because of it. The things he witnessed. He even had to take care of things after she OD’d. There was no excuse for them to not ever come see about them. They were all too busy under Smurf’s tit. This was his plan all along because he wanted them to pay by taking everything from them and he did it. Smurf def ranks up there with the worst mothers ever. OMG she screwed them up royally. J was shown from jumpstreet to be smarter than all of them. That’s why she gave him so much responsibility and then left him in control of her estate. I got sick of the flashbacks but this was a memorable series. Great actors and good writing. I think my favorite parts were early on watching them successfully pull off the heists.
Great comment I agree with much of what you said. Me and three other people gave our predictions before the finale aired. I think we all knew Pope (sadly) was going to die. I was really torn about J. I didn’t want him to beat the boys, but I also didn’t want him hurt. His feeling for revenge were justified, but I didn’t want him to ruin the boys. I also didn’t care much for the flashbacks. I like plots to move forward and fast and with the Cody’s, it was always that way, but then we had to go back in time. I also loved the heist scenes. I loved how organized they were all the right equipment, timing, uniforms. Brilliant stuff. I started to think that Julia didn’t die and she and J had planned this all along together, because even in the finale, young Julia got so much air time! J does look miserable so that might be punishment enough, but what will happen to Deran? He has no money. No home. No family. And a bazillion cops after him. Will he get to Adrian? Will he take care of Ren & Nick? So sad that Pope died alone and Craig was left at the side of the road. For a minute there, I thought Deran was going to jump to his death and take Craig along with him. I’m gonna miss those boys.
I must have missed something. Didn’t Deran have a stash of cash from the bar safe hidden somewhere? That should be enough to get him out of the country and to Adrian. And send some money to Ren and Nick.
Everything they had was stored in those box cars. J took everything, the stock pile of guns, money and whatever else they had there.
The diamonds! Craig and Deran had loose diamonds. That’s what Craig meant at the end – his last word was diamonds.

Smurf ruined Julia’s life by lying to her about the school.. Julia would never end up in drugs! Smurf was a mother you would never want for anybody!! But there are mothers / fathers like that RUIN THE KIDS!!

I really didn’t want to see pope die and j live but I I understand the bitterness he held toward the family. Smurf was a horrible person and everyone suffered in some way. Really going to miss this show!
What an amazing show! Unbelievable cast! Truly one of the best series on TV! I’m really glad I gave it a chance, when initially introduced during the beginning of the pandemic! Soooo great!!! Five Stars!!!
