Melanie Griffith Divorcing Antonio Banderas

Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas are ending their 18-year marriage.

Griffith filed for divorce from Banderas on Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court, citing irreconcilable differences, according to documents obtained by PEOPLE.

In a statement sent from their rep, the couple says, “We have thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalize our almost twenty years marriage in a loving and friendly manner honoring and respecting each other, our family and friends and the beautiful time we have spent together.”

Griffith, 56, who attended a private American Film Institute tribute ceremony in Hollywood honoring Jane Fonda with Eva Longoria on Thursday, seeks spousal support from Banderas, 53, and physical custody for their daughter Stella, with visitation for Banderas.

Banderas and Stella, 17, were spotted Wednesday enjoying a “quiet and low-key” lunch at Matsuhisa in Beverly Hills, an onlooker tells PEOPLE.

No separation date was given. Sources told TMZ, which first reported the filing, that the split is amicable. The couple shot down rumors of marital problems in 2012, with a source telling PEOPLE they seemed “very happy, mutually supportive, loving,” even after Banderas was seen on video dancing with actress Mallika Sherawat in Cannes, and Griffith was later spotted briefly without her wedding ring.

But Griffith seemed all smiles on the AFI red carpet, wearing her ring as she happily posed with Longoria and Rosanna Arquette. The couple was last photographed together on March 16 as they arrived at the airport in Los Angeles, where she also wore her wedding ring.

Griffith, the daughter of screen star Tippi Hedren and a Golden Globe winner for 1989’s Working Girl, has been married four times, including twice to actor Don Johnson, with whom she has daughter Dakota, 24, who is starring in the film adaptation of 50 Shades of Grey.

Banderas has been married twice. He was divorced from first wife, Spanish actress Ana Leza, in 1996 after nine years together.
