Neighbourhood: Marina Bay
More of a mini city than a neighbourhood in the traditional sense, the iconic Marina Bay aims to dazzle and entertain visitors of all kinds. This is the Singapore found in glossy brochures, featuring a world-class hotel, casino, shops, restaurants, bars, and other attractions all geared towards pure entertainment. The SkyPark at Marina Bay Sands provides a stunning view of the city, a must-see photo opportunity for visitors and locals alike. The ArtScience Museum always has a top-quality exhibition, and Gardens by the Bay is a fascinating manifestation of the government’s vision of Singapore as a “city in a garden”. Enticing Marina Bay is well worth a visit.

Nice to see the historical area in comparison to the ultramodern skyline. You can feel the old colonial styles and Western interpretation of refined. Nice architecture

You can't go on it as it is a sports field and they have put up a big bit of wire to hold big lights to light up the sports field at night, but this is always in the way of any photographs

In the middle of one of the most urbanized islands in the world, there is a wide open green space, but its not a garden or park, simply a green grassy area that has serve Singapore for 200 years. This odd space is part history, gathering place and sport. It is the site of the creation of Singapore where the charter between the British and the Malayan prince was signed. It was once the place where the Singapore River reached the ocean. Today it acts as a public Mall in front of the colonial buildings where sport, cricket and soccer is played. We saw cricket matches playing there on both weekend days we were in Singapore.

You can't miss this green oasis in a sea of buildings. We found ourselves around it so many times while visited around the island. Not something you build you trip around but something you will definitely see.

A nice green area in the center of the city. Used primarily for youth soccer and sports. The Padang has been there since the time of Raffles.

It is at the City Hall where the Padang is located that Singapore declared her independence in 1965. From 1966 to 1974, this was the venue where the National Day Parade was held annually. Thereafter, the national celebration was decentralized to other locations but now and then, it will return to this great historic venue for celebration.

This year in conjunction with the bicentennial celebration, the National Day Parade was held at this Padang again. I volunteered as a first aid volunteer for one of the previews. I stood myself at the top deck of the platform and found myself unfamiliar with this Padang. The whole Padang of grass land was being transformed into a concrete stadium floor.

I am one of those in the Merdeka Generation. I was born in 1959 when Singapore gained self-government. I witnessed the growth of this nation from 3rd world country to First World. The path this country took was a tough and tumultuous one but deep in our DNA was the self determination for survival and success. We built our defense from scratch. Today, this country has the most sophisticated and advanced defense system in South East Asia. Economically, we are one of the richest countries in the world.

The Bicentennial celebration reminded me of the evolutionary history of this small nation. We were once part of the Srivijaya and Majapahit Empires before coming under the Malay sultanate. The arrival of the British colonialists changed our destiny as we triumphed to become an enterprising free entrepot port. But the Japanese Imperialists brutally ended the prosperity and the 3 years 8 months tyranny rule left behind indelible memories of suffering and torture. We broke off from Malaysia and survived till today. The Padang witnessed the British and the Japanese rule and our independence.

The Padang always reminded me of the challenges my country went through. There are many challenges and uncertainties ahead. The trade war, the coming recession, the rise of China, the threat of terrorism, etc, etc. Will the fourth generation of leaders able to bring us through the many challenges ahead? Every Singaporean has to stay united so that we can tackle the challenges as one great nation.

Padang is not just a place for the Cricket Club or a place for the hockey players but the place where the Lion roars!

It saddens me that people write a review of a place without any knowledge of the history of such place. The Padang is to Singaporean’s and others more than just “a bit of grass in the middle of the city”. Stop, reflect and think about those who have passed. Read the history of Singapore from the 1940’s especially, before visiting the Padang (field).

On this visit the Padang was all set up for some kind of rally or concert. Little of the grass was to be seen. But we have been there when our grandson was playing rugby in a tournament on it.
