i'm going to cry. I wanted to sideload some apps. I created a password in the development mode. It asks to confirm. I re-enter. and it's good. I use the same 4 digits everytime. I go on my computer and open my ddpb. Then someone bbm'd me and I picked up my bb and it had locked because it was inactive for 5 minutes. I swipe up and the screen to enter password shows up. I enter the digits..and it wasn't correct. I tried 7 times. OMG 2 more and it will wipe! So tried to log in my ddpb because it asks for the password....couldn't get in. i tried every possible combination. i googled around and there was no answer but to wipe. So i did 2 more tries on my bb. and now it's wiping. I did do a backup last night. But I had texts messages today! And i got some texts while i was trying to log in. Those will be gone when I finally reboot.

It's been half an hour now and I still see the wiping icon. I'm freaking out. was there another way? or was wiping the only way to.

i really don't know how it was possible for me to type the password incorrectly twice!! AAAGH!! I'm such a dork!

Yikes, well it sounds like the device is already going through the security wipe, which unfortunately will make you lose all of your data (I'm happy that you have a backup!)

In the future (and possibly when your device restores after the wipe), I think you should be able to use your BBID to reset your device password.

yes it took an hour and half to wipe. i'm reinstalling the os now. sigh. such a drag.

My last backup was lastnight at 10:40pm. So that's good. But I will lose everything from today.

I had no choice but to wipe. I don't think i could use BBID to reset. It's a different password. I wish that it would give you the option to set how many times you can enter incorrectly!!! hahaha...

Isn't it the same as your lock screen password? At least, for me it is.

i didn't have a locked screen password. When you go into development mode, (to sideload apps) you create a password, which you use to enter when you're in locked screen. And that's the problem. I created a password, and then entered again to confirm (and somehow i typed it in incorrectly both times!) but it saved. And when it went into locked screen because it was inactive, i tried to enter and it was wrong.

oh well. at least it is now installing the latest os. just wasted my whole night.

The BBID would not necessarily use the same password but could, theoretically, be used to reset the device password. Like how you send an email to your email account when you forget a password on a website. But, it looks like you didn't have to worry about the password after the wipe so it's all good.

The new os is nice but I lost some of my contacts! I have a serious issue with the contacts and links. I have people w 7 links. When u want to add something which one do u add to? Cuz say if u delete fb account from ur hub, then the new info u entered and saved on the fb contact would be gone. It's so confusing. I want to start a thread but I'm not explaining this too well.

I still don't understand how u could use bbid to reset the device password.

Yeah, that's an annoying glitch that happens on certain OS builds and/or when you restore your data sometimes. I don't really know how to tell whether duplicate contacts will happen or not. But you can either use the "link" function to group all of the duplicates into one entry, or pick one source (Facebook, your email account, the sim card, etc) to store all of your data and delete the other entries. Usually I get fed up and just leave it alone.

The BBID restore is something I'm not 100% sure of since I've never had to use it, but you can consider it a backup plan of sorts so you don't have to resort to using a security wipe if you forget your device password. Again I'm not absolutely sure that this functionality is built into BB10, but I think I remember reading about it before. Either way, it doesn't apply to your situation anymore.
