Big Brother 25 is the 25th season of the broadcasted edition of Big Brother (U.S.) and the 29th season overall.

As with the past few seasons, this season was first announced by the show itself ahead of an official renewal announcement from CBS, with a casting call being aired during the Final Three recap episode of Big Brother 24 (US), the penultimate episode of the season. The same casting call was later tweeted out that night with the "#BB25" hashtag and a link to the CBS casting webpage, which was also updated to say that applications for season 25 are open. The official renewal announcement was made on finale night of BB24.

Development

Due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike impacting their fall schedule, CBS announced on May 22nd, 2023 that Big Brother 25 and The Challenge: USA 2 would be getting delayed debuts in August instead of July as they did the year prior. BB25 specifically was set to air on Wednesday, August 2nd with a special 90-minute live premiere at 8 PM EST, continuing with its usual Wednesday-Thursday-Sunday schedule. However, airing on Wednesdays in the fall would clash with the already announced Survivor 45 and The Amazing Race 35, which were confirmed to be getting 90-minute episodes for their entire seasons just weeks ahead of the BB25 announcement. When CBS officially announced their fall schedule on July 17, 2023, it was revealed that the schedule clashing would be resolved by moving the second half of BB25 from Wednesdays to Tuesdays, but remaining in its 8 PM EST timeslot. In addition, the Thursday episodes would be pushed up from 9 PM EST to 8 PM EST, while the Sunday episodes would be pushed back from 8 PM EST to 10 PM EST.

The last time a writers strike impacted CBS scheduling was in 2007-2008, which led to Big Brother 9 (US) airing that winter, with Big Brother 10 (US) taking the usual summer slot in its place. Instead of adding a second main season for the year or going for a fourth Celebrity Big Brother season, CBS repeated the approach they took the last time Big Brother had to be delayed to an August premiere, which was with Big Brother 22 (US) running from August to late October due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The promotional material for this season started being released as early as May 2023, and highlighted the series as a whole instead of just the last few seasons, honing in on the anniversary aspect of 25 seasons.

The season was reported to be lasting into November, which would mark the return to 90+ day seasons since Big Brother 21 (US) clocked in 99 days, before the shift down to 85 days the following season. It was later confirmed that the season would last for 100 days for the first time ever, with finale night set to be on Thursday, November 9, 2023.

After it was announced that Big Brother Canada 11 would be doing away with their Live Feeds, a statement was immediately released, informing the American audience that the Live Feeds would remain intact for BB25. On August 1, 2023, it was announced that the Live Feeds would be aired for free on their own channels within Pluto TV, with limited ad breaks shown throughout. The Live Feeds would continue to air on Paramount+ with a subscription and no ads.

During early June 2023, many alumni were reported to be filming a special anniversary segment, rumored to be for Entertainment Tonight, with filming occurring at the Big Brother studio in Los Angeles and also a studio space in New York City. It was later revealed that there would be an entire hour long special as opposed to just a brief segment, airing on Wednesday, July 26th, just one week before the season premiere. On July 13th, the special was officially announced with the title Big Brother: 25th Anniversary Celebration, hosted by Entertainment Tonight. In addition to host Julie Chen-Moonves, the alumni who participate in the interviews include: Danielle Reyes, Janelle Pierzina, Kaysar Ridha, Jeff Schroeder, Jordan Lloyd, Brendon Villegas, Rachel Reilly, Cody Calafiore, Derrick Levasseur, Frankie Grande, Azah Awasum, Derek Frazier, Hannah Chaddha, Tiffany Mitchell, Xavier Prather and Taylor Hale.

The special will look back "at the most notable highlights over the years, including the showmances, biggest feuds and rivalries, shocking twists, historic houseguests and groundbreaking moments in reality TV history," followed by a sneak peek of BB25's house and clues towards the season's twist at the end of the special.

Twists

• BB Break-In: Danielle Reyes, Britney Haynes and Frankie Grande broke into the Big Brother House in an attempt to change their fates from their prior seasons with a "Time Laser", but their plan backfired and accidentally cracked open the BB Multiverse, the twist of the season, forcing the new houseguests to live with the consequences of their attempt. The twist will affect the physical state of the house, the competitions, and how the game is played.
• BB Multiverse: Four different BB Universes took over after the break in, each with the potential to twist up the game at any point in the season. The universes could bring something as small as a temporary punishment or something as large as a game changing twist. Each universe also correlates to a theme of one of the bedrooms in the house.
  • The BB Comic-verse:
    • Cock-a-Doodle Zoom: Inspired by the "Humanimal" BB Comics characters, the Week 3 Power of Veto winner would be forced to wear a superhero chicken costume for a week.
    • BB Power of Invincibility: During Week 4, fan voting opened for a special superpower. The four houseguests chosen by the vote will compete in a secret, individual competition. The winner of the competition will be allowed to save one of the next two evictees (including themselves) and immediately bring them back into the game, or let the power expire without being used. In the event that the power is used, the outgoing Head of Household will be allowed to compete in the next HOH competition, due to both of their nominees staying in the game.
    • BB Comic-Week: BB Comic-Week will be unleashing superpowers to shake up the game throughout all of Week 11.
      • BB Power of Invisibility: The Head of Household will operate in secret for the duration of the week.
      • BB Power of Multiplicity: There will be two Power of Vetoes up for grabs this week.
  • The Humili-verse:
    • Have-Not Room: The Have-Not Room is themed around the Humili-verse, and the houseguests must spin a wheel to determine how many times they get humiliated by a "butt-kicking machine" before they can exit the room.
    • Snot A Winner: The Week 3 HOH would be humiliated by getting "snotted" at random intervals for 24 hours after their win. They must also choose another houseguest to take the punishment with them every single time.
    • Humili-week: Week 6 was dubbed "Humili-week". To start, every houseguest except the new HOH would be forced to be Have-Nots, taking turns sleeping in the Have-Not Room. They then had to announce any time they used the bathroom, and if the House "Stink-o-meter" ever reached a 10/10, they would all have to wear gas masks until the air was "no longer stinky". And for the nomination ceremony, the HOH had to name the houseguests who were safe by pieing them in the face, reminiscent of the old key wheel.
  • The Scary-verse:
    • The Nether Region: The loser of the premiere night Scary-verse competition was doomed to "disappear into the Nether Region" for "an unknown amount of time". After a few hours, they returned to the house with a transmission, warning the other houseguests that the next person to enter the Nether Region won't be so lucky. In Week 2, it was revealed that the houseguests would be sending each other to the Nether Region at random points in the week, and depending on when they go it could have positive or negative effects on the game. The person who placed second in the HOH competition had to pick someone else to send to the Nether Region, granting them safety for the week. After that person with safety returned, they had to send someone else. This final person sent into the Nether Region will be ineligible to be chosen for the Power of Veto competition, but the HOH and nominees are immune from being sent since they are already in the Veto.
    • Scary Week Double Eviction & Big Brother Zombies: The Week 7 Double Eviction will have a Scary-verse twist to it. The two houseguests evicted on Day 51 will turn into "Big Brother Zombies". Later that night, they will move back into the house as Zombies, and the week will play out with no HOH or POV competitions. At the end of Week 8, one of the two will return to the game, while the other is out of the game for good. Because there were no competitions during Week 8, the outgoing HOH heading into Week 9 would be eligible to compete again.
  • The Scramble-verse:
    • Nomination Competition: On premiere night, the game was turned upside down. Instead of competing to be Head of Household, the houseguests competed to avoid being nominated. The houseguests were split into four groups of four to compete, where the losers would be automatically nominated for eviction, leaving a total of four nominees before an HoH is even crowned.
      • Head of Household Save: Instead of nominating two players for eviction, the first HoH would save two of the four nominees from the Nomination Competition, leaving two more on the block for the week. From there, their reign continues on as normal, controlling the power to renominate or break a tie if necessary.
    • Seventeenth HouseGuest: After the initial sixteen houseguests were revealed, it was announced that a surprise seventeenth houseguest would also be playing the game. Following the conclusion of the premiere night competitions, it was revealed that Survivor legend Cirie Fields would also be playing the game.
      • Relatives Playing Together: Jared Fields was initially revealed to be on the cast, and his mother Cirie later joined the game. They knew that the other was playing, and their relation was not confirmed to the other houseguests by production, but certain players were already aware due to Cirie's Survivor legacy and Jared's appearance as her Loved One on one of her seasons.

• Classic Jury Format: At the start of Week 7, Julie revealed that the Jury of the season would be going "old school", regressing back to a Jury of Seven instead of a Jury of Nine.

In an effort to celebrate reaching the milestone of 25 seasons, the season featured many throwbacks from the prior seasons as an homage to the series, similar to how they did for Big Brother 20 (US).
