Today's gaming consoles offer more visually impressive and immersive interactive experiences than ever before. Graphics, animations, music, and sound effects seamlessly work together to transport gamers of all ages to imaginative and exciting virtual worlds.
Currently, the most popular gaming consoles come from Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft – each offering several console configurations and options. This buyer’s guide offers the information you need to choose the best gaming console for yourself, your kids, or your entire family to enjoy. The Nintendo Switch OLED earns our pick for the best overall gaming console, but read on to find which console is the right fit for you.
Uniquely, the Nintendo Switch OLED offers three gameplay modes: It can be connected to a TV, positioned on a tabletop, and used without a TV with its built-in OLED display, or played as a handheld gaming system. It also has the most diverse selection of games for all ages, including an ever-growing selection of exclusive games featuring iconic characters.
Compared to the original Switch, this one features a larger, seven-inch OLED touchscreen with enhanced stereo sound quality and other improvements. It also comes with a docking station to connect the system to a TV. One set of Joy-Con controllers (for one player), is included. Battery life in handheld mode is between 4.5 and 9 hours.
We highly recommend this console to parents with younger children, since a vast library of non-violent and age-appropriate games is available. However, Switch’s game library also includes many titles targeted to older players who appreciate high-action combat, hand-to-hand fighting, sports simulations, RPGs, action/adventures, and other more complex games. For all of these reasons, it's the best gaming console available overall.

The PS5 offers all the popular games for teens and adults, including genres that feature lots of action and violent combat. You can also discover ultra-realistic sports simulations, immersive RPGs, and challenging action/adventures. In addition to offering games from top franchises, the PS5 has truly impressive graphics and sound that teens and adults will appreciate, as well as an ultra-fast SSD for internal storage.
Most games are controlled using a DualSense controller, which provides players with accurate and lag-free control over on-screen action. These controllers also offer haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a built-in speaker.
In summary, this gaming console provides a gaming experience that often more closely replicates what’s possible using a high-end Windows PC. The PS5 is also currently the only console that offers an optional VR headset. The Blu-Ray player that accepts physical PS5 games and that’s able to play DVD and Blu-Ray content is also a plus. The genuine PlayStation accessories for the PS5 are expensive, however.

The main difference between the PS 5 Standard Edition and the PS 5 Digital Edition is that the Digital Edition lacks a Blu-Ray player. This means that all games need to be downloaded and stored within the console’s internal storage or on an optional external SSD. And without the Blu-Ray drive, any multimedia content such as movies can only be streamed via the internet. However, because game and TV/movie distribution is quickly moving online, the lack of a Blu-Ray player likely won’t be missed by most people.
The AAA titles available for the PS5 look truly amazing and offer more detailed and immersive experiences than what’s ever before been possible from a game console. For games like “Fortnite,” “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare,” “Hogwarts Legacy,” “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2,” “Minecraft,” “Apex Legends,” “Madden NFL 24,” “Mortal Kombat 1,” or “Grand Theft Auto V,” for example, either configuration of the PS5 is the console to experience them on.

For several years, Xbox has been going head-to-head against the PlayStation consoles – both offering a broad range of games that appeal to older gamers. However, while Xbox Series S and Series X consoles are less expensive than the PlayStation 5, the PlayStation systems are the most powerful and have a bigger selection of AAA games.
The Xbox consoles do offer optional access to the Xbox Game Pass online service, which for a relatively low monthly fee provides an ever-changing selection of 100+ game titles. Other console features include Quick Resume (allowing players to switch between games and pick up where they left off), faster load times, and a higher frame rate than previous Xbox consoles. This Xbox also supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.
For someone who’s already a long-time Xbox fan, upgrading to the Series S is an affordable option. Our contributor Jason Rich found this to be a good all-around gaming console, but don’t feel it should be a top pick for highly experienced gamers. For that audience, he recommends the PS 5.
Unlike the Xbox Series S, the Series X offers more advanced gaming hardware (including a better processor and GPU), plus 1 TB of internal storage that’s expandable up to 2 TB using a Seagate Storage Expansion Card.
The CPU/GPU combo offers 12 teraflops of graphics processing power, compared to just 4 teraflops offered by the Series S. Perhaps most importantly, the Series X can display true 4K graphics. This console also comes with a built-in Blu-Ray player that supports access to physical Xbox games and can play DVD or Blu-Ray content.
While the Series X is a bit larger, both the Series X and Series S have a lot of similarities, including the same port and connectivity options. They also use the same Xbox wireless controller. Both the Series X and Series S play the same games and are backward-compatible with older Xbox systems. Plus, both offer optional access to the Xbox Game Pass online service.
If a gamer is looking to upgrade to one of the newest generation Xbox consoles, we recommend the Series X over the Series S; our contributor Jason Rich found that the Series X's faster processors and 4K resolution make a huge difference. Plus, you can play games and movies on the Blu-Ray player.

This latest version of the Steam Deck offers an enhanced HDR display with a longer-lasting battery and faster wireless capabilities. The system also comes with up to 1 TB of internal storage. The built-in 7.4-inch HDR OLED display offers a 1,280 x 800 pixel resolution with a refresh rate of up to 90Hz. Maximum brightness is up to 1,000 nits. All of this means that, for a handheld console, games look great.
Where the Steam Deck shines is its seamless integration with Steam (a popular online gaming platform, digital storefront, and social platform for PC gamers). Plus, if you place it in its dock, you can connect it to your TV, transforming it from a handheld system into a traditional gaming console.
Since this system is compatible with the Steam cloud-based gaming service that supports Windows PC gaming, you can start playing on your Steam Deck and pick up exactly where you left off on a PC (or vice versa) when playing compatible games. With the Steam Deck, your Steam game library is accessible anywhere and anytime, without having to lug around a high-end gaming laptop.
Dozens of AAA PC games, including “Apex Legends,” “Elden Ring,” “Diablo IV,” “Mortal Kombat 1,” and “Hogwarts Legacy,” have been “Stream Deck verified” to work flawlessly on this gaming console. If you’re going to invest in this high-end version of the Stream Dock, we recommend adding the dock. This system will mainly appeal to more serious PC gamers who want an easy way to experience popular PC games from a handheld system or on their TV.

The best console-based video game system for you and/or your family will depend on a variety of factors, including how and where you want to experience your favorite games, the types of games you want to play, and your budget. Our choice is the Nintendo Switch OLED. With its three gameplay modes and plenty of games for all ages, this gaming console will keep the whole family entertained.
Console Hardware Specifications and Performance: The hardware and components built into the gaming console, controllers, and accessories directly impact gaming experiences. So if your budget permits, get the highest-end version of a particular console that you can afford.
“Most systems today offer pretty impressive graphics power, whether they are displaying the latest graphics or upgrading retro-graphics for a more vivid experience than ever before," says Christen Costa, CEO of Gadget Review. "If 4K Ultra HD is essential to you, ensure the system you are purchasing is capable of offering that resolution. Some consoles may only provide that ability in their higher-end models."
Game Library, Exclusive Titles, and Game Prices: Each console has its own library of compatible games, a collection of exclusive games only available for that console, and offers access to cloud-based games. Choose a system that offers the types of games you want to play.
“When selecting a console, it's crucial to consider its ecosystem, which includes the game library, online services, and community," says Eric Slemboski, owner of StreamersPlaybook.com. "While design and manufacturer reputation matter, the availability of exclusive titles and the compatibility with preferred gaming genres are key. For instance, if someone enjoys narrative-driven, single-player games, a console with a rich library of such titles is ideal."
Miromind CEO Dmitriy Shelepin says to consider everything, from exclusive games to whether you want physical or cloud-based games. "For the little gamers, parental controls are essential. At the end of the day, the best console is the one that fills your days with joy and brings your favorite games to life,” he says.
Online Service and Multiplayer Features: Consoles from Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft each can connect (optionally and for a fee) to an online gaming service specifically for that system. These services offer access to games, as well as the opportunity to play online-based multiplayer games with people potentially located anywhere in the world. The various consoles also allow for local multiplayer gaming, but only if multiple wireless controllers are connected to the same system.
Media Capabilities and Entertainment Options: The PS5 Standard Edition and Xbox Series X have a built-in Blu-Ray player and can play TV shows and movies, while the PS5 Digital Edition and Xbox Series S can only stream content from popular services. The Nintendo Switch can't stream movies or video content, as it's only designed for gaming.
Controller Design: Gaming consoles have proprietary controllers with unique designs and are compatible with third-party controllers. Unless the packaging states otherwise, each console comes with just one controller.
Backward Compatibility: Both the PS5 and Xbox are backward compatible with physical and digital versions of games. The Switch isn't backward compatible, but authentic adaptations of classic games from older systems are available to play via the Nintendo Switch Online service and are included with the subscription.
Storage Capacity and Expandability: A console’s internal storage determines how many games it can store. In some cases, the internal storage can be upgraded or expanded. The latest Switch, PS5, and Xbox systems also allow for an optional external storage drive.
Virtual Reality Headset: Currently, only the PS5 has a virtual reality headset available.
Parental Controls: Most of the gaming consoles we reviewed have parental controls that allow an adult to block inappropriate game content, set time limits, restrict online gaming, and more.
“Parents should activate and manage content restrictions, spending limits, and online communication settings on their child’s gaming console," Slemboski says. "It's crucial to use these controls to ensure age-appropriate gaming experiences and to protect children from unwanted online interactions."
Price: Consider the cost of the console and optional accessories, expanded storage, extra controllers, and individual games (typically between $30 to $80 each). If you plan to subscribe to the console’s online service, factor in the ongoing subscription fee for that as well.
Our contributor, Jason R. Rich, conducted extensive research and hands-on testing to compile this buyer’s guide of the best console-based video game systems currently available. He considered things like each system’s overall hardware capabilities, graphics and sound quality, available game library, controller design, connectivity options, online gaming capabilities, and what unique features set each game console apart from its competition.
To help with his research, Jason conducted in-depth interviews with Eric Slemboski, owner of StreamersPlaybook.com; Dmitriy Shelepin, CEO of Miromind; and Christen Costa, CEO of Gadget Review.

In addition, Rich has been writing about and reviewing video games and game consoles throughout his career. He’s written thousands of game-related articles and authored more than 75 full-length video game strategy guides.
Our picks for the best gaming consoles run between $250 and $650, but there are others outside that price range. Consider how often you use a gaming console, the features and setup you want, and your budget before reviewing this list to pick the gaming console that’s right for you.
For casual gamers, the hardware specifications of the game console itself are less important than the library of games available for it and the ways players can interact with those games. Online connectivity options for multiplayer games, as well as the ability to play multiplayer games locally, are also important.
The versions of the PS5 and Xbox without a DVD drive are less expensive. You can also typically save money if you purchase a bundle that includes the console, one or two controllers, and at least one game.
This really comes down to personal preference. PC gaming can offer better graphics and higher resolution than console gaming if you have a high-end gaming computer, especially if you’re using one of the best 4K gaming monitors of 2024. However, many people prefer consoles, which are simpler and more straightforward than gaming PCs. They're also considerably less expensive.
Processors, internal memory, internal storage space, and design are some of the key things that set gaming consoles apart. For example, the Nintendo Switch offers three game modes; it can be connected to a TV or monitor, propped up on a flat surface and played while looking at the built-in display, or played in handheld mode. The PS5 and Xbox consoles each have a version that comes with a Blu-Ray player and a version that doesn't.
“The PS5 and Xbox Series X/S both offer remarkable game quality and playability, but they cater to slightly different audiences," Slemboski says. "The PS5's strengths lie in its exclusive titles and innovative DualSense controller, enhancing the gaming experience with immersive haptic feedback. The Xbox Series X/S, on the other hand, excels in its integration with the Xbox Game Pass service, which offers a vast library of games for a monthly subscription fee.
The collection of exclusive games available for a specific console is only important if you plan to play those games. Otherwise, focus on the overall game library and what games can be played online. It all comes down to what games you're looking for.
For families with young kids, we highly recommend the original Nintendo Switch. It offers the most ways to experience individual games, as well as the largest collection of non-violent, kid- and family-friendly games. This system also offers integrated parental controls, plus a library of 100+ games that are included with a subscription to Nintendo Switch Online ($20/year).
