About
This Moroccan-styled lounge is a Shanghai icon. Sitting in the middle of a pond in the center of People’s Park, Barbarossa offers a tranquil dining setting in the heart of downtown. Though heavily Moroccan themed, with Arabic decor and style throughout, the food menu has broadened to include Southeast Asian and Mediterranean flavors. The Crabs are the ‘stars of the show’ at Ministry Of Crab, with signature dishes such as Chili Crab, Pepper Crab and Baked Crab, the amazing Sri Lankan King Prawns complimented with a range of delectable accompaniments. You can also enjoy a wide range of cocktails, hookahs, good music and cool ambiance when dining here.

My favorite bar in the world. This place is a little oasis in busy Shanghai, coming here since the opening night back in 2005 and Barbarossa never let me down.
Great vibes, food and drinks. Lovely team and always nice to see some bars flying around at night.
Ministry of Crab on the first floor is soooo good. Black pepper crab orgy ahead

Fabulous location, and beautiful and comfortable decor. The full crab dinner was absolutely divine. The bar on the upper floor was tastefully decorated. A very convivial atmosphere! Excellent service!

Right from the start, Barbarossa made our arrangement very easy and simple! I have been going to Barbarossa since 2009 and never once been disappointed! Set right in the middle of People’s Park, the view is fantastic on the second floor, setting cosy and great drinks and snacks! The venue gave us a wonderful night to remember and were so attentive! A great atmosphere perfect for a night out! Will definitely go again as soon as possible! Thanks Barbarossa!

Even though I am not keen on crab I do love some quality king prawns and so I decided to give 'Ministry of Crab' at Barbarossa a try for dinner when in Shanghai on business. This fabulously decorated restaurant and lounge, (upstairs is a fabulous chill-out lounge with low lighting, sofa's, cool music and shisha), has a menu that is 95% crab or prawns. There are one or two fish and chicken dishes on the menu but no beef, lamb or pork in sight. I went for the Clay Pot King Prawn Sri-Lankan Curry and it really was delicious. Generous helping of Tiger Prawns with a curry sauce that was just bursting with delicate spice flavours. It came with cubes of bread for soaking up the sauce and I ordered a side of Morning Glory as well, which was again full of flavour and very nicely cooked. With one Stella 500ml beer my bill came to a total of RMB433 (inc a 10% service charge). An amount that I thought reasonable for the amazing meal I had eaten in such a beautiful and ambient dining area. There are also some lovely Private Dining rooms if you have a large group. All around are Turkish style lanterns and candles... Barbarossa is simply stunning in every way.

We were a bit hot and thirsty when we stumbled on Barbarossa in the People’s Park. Even though we only wanted a cold beer, we were welcomed warmly. The location is lovely - a light filled conservatory overlooking a pond. We could see other’s eating and the food looked good.

Excellent restaurant with great ambiance and food. Crab was very good. Wait staff very professional and gave us great directions on how to eat them. Not inexpensive but a nice treat.

Very nice restaurant in the park, with spectacular windows (better be there before sunset to appreciate the view of the park)
They serve Sri Lankan crabs of all size, with only one dish for those who don’t like sea food.
Staff is very nice. Prices are fair for what one gets

Great flavors, friendly staff.
After dark the restaurant is a little hard to find as the surrounding area in the park is pitch dark with little lighting.
No vegetarian options that I could see.
A little more explanation would have been nice as a first time visitor. Other than how gigantoid the shrimp/crab would be I didn’t know why I would pick a particular sauce over another.
The clay pot curry was a nice no decisions meal of good size. Warning, it comes with a place of soft bread to soak up the curry (which is slightly spicy depending on your tolerance) which is awesome but makes you potentially extremely full. My willpower to stop eating bread with sauce is bad though.

Be careful when your trying to visit this place i kept going round and round only to discover that its inside the park .
Once there the atmosphere is great . If your a shisha (hookah)fan this is the place to be in shanghai . Food is good , prices are reasonable and service is quick . Shisha flavours are limited but acceptable .

Went there expecting a Spanish restaurant, however now is a Sri Lankan restaurant specializing in crabs, giant shrimps, etc.
The service was excellent and so was the food, however the total price was way more that expected; perhaps the issue was that the meal included a glass of champagne and during the meal we asked for two more.
Total price around US$300 for two.

Planned to go for a steak dinner nearby, but upon arrival changed our minds (just didnt have the right feel), checked for nearby places and found Barbarossa.
Arrived and a table was found. Clay pot prawn. Amazing dish, a bit spicy but v v tasty.
Good service, great atmosphere. Worth a visit.

The place is inside Peoples Park. Make sure yur taxi drops yu in front of the gate or yu could be spending a long time finding the place. The bar upstairs is quite nice, the service is good, ambience is excellent, drinks are market priced for upscale and the bar eats are way below average. Surely they can do a better job there

People’s Square brings with it all the excitement you would expect from the town square of one of the biggest cities in the world. The area around People’s Square and People’s Park is always a abuzz with activity. Oceans of local and foreign tourists flow in and out of the area every day to see grand museums, go shopping and eat at some of Shanghai’s most storied food centers.
