There's so much that the other reviews missed.. What they don't realize I suppose is that Mariah must of either thought this was some kind of deep thinking masterpiece... or maybe she got in a fight with the editor..
The 1st time through I thought it was just the worst book I've ever read.. the 2nd time through I realized that it was a message piece.. I REALLY think that she wanted to call most of the non-Mariah characters 'racists' but either that was too much, or the editor fought her over it..
Yes, the illustrations are great. now back to reality. Many pages are intended to rhyme, and ALMOST would if the words had any rhythm. They don't. Some pages have no identifiable rhymes.
I'm all about adjectives above reading level, but I'm left with the impression that these adjectives were well above her Writing level. No one talks like this. The book is almost unreadable for her apparent attempts at sounding smart with 'big words'. Reading this out loud is a torturous experience, and its worse once you see the messaging.
The 1st several pages are whining about how bad it is living in the crappy house in a nice neighborhood.. Basically imagine that she's harry potter and her mom / bird are the foster family.. She's tortured and lives in disgusting scarcity.... but in a -really- nice neighborhood... huh?
Her evil mom is white and the bird tweets moms commands to her daughter. mom has zero dialog. She sings. ok...
Then there is a single page about how great charismas is.. the house gets cleaned and everyone is nice...
Turn the page, and.... Her mom leaves for CANDY CANES and is never heard from or talked about again.
The evil rich French neighbors with a British accent... come down from their mansion at the top of the hill to harass and bully her.. to destroy her house. To terrify her.
These blond haired, blue eyed siblings take their orders from a combover... I mean.. a comb.
This goes on for 9 pages, and on the 10th page she sings a song under the table then peaks out to see that its SNOWING! She sticks her head out the window remarks... then leaves the house to rush into the woods.....
Ok.. Where the hell did the racists go? They chased her under the table... there's an illustration of them standing over the table... They're screaming at her...... but one song sung and they too are gone.... never to be seen or heard from again.. Just like Mariah's craphole house.
So, she runs out into the woods on this snowy beautiful night, and lays down to watch the stars... The Stars... on a super snowy night.... It's ok. They turned into snowflakes, and then fairies....
Anyhow, the fairies decorated the woods with ice, then ran away as desperate Mariah chased..... never to be heard from or seen again.
Now she wonders scared through the now very dark woods... (still confused about the weather) and comes across a group of proud boys.. Runs and Almost escap.....
Wait.. Sorry.. not "Proud boys" she calls them "Shamey shame boys" Luckily she takes the time to explain that these boys wear green camouflaged uniforms, and they never read or learn..
Well anyhow... She finds a rock that's pretty and sings it a song, then a laser shoots out of it that guides her to a book.. Wait.. What? You want to know about what happened to the shamey shame boys? I know.. you think they're never to be heard from again....
But they 'catch up' to Mariah just in time for her to point the book at them.... and they are pretty cool now because "It was revealed that they're just a group of fearful little boys" but still white so NOW they can go away until curtain call.
The book now summons the only other character with darker skin in the whole book.. And I'm pretty sure that it's Herself... but older, richer, famouser, and way more fabulouser.
So, for no reason other than 'christmas book!' Lil mariah gets crowned the queen of christmas, and She comes back with big mariah to their run down shack.. For the big group number! The evil bird, fairies, her now smiling mom.. even the british french kids are nice.. Such is the way with curtain calls. and wouldn't ya know it, a bunch of people of color who were never seen or written about show up for this christmas page!
By the way.. if you're keeping track.. That's 2 pages + a sentence that are about christmas / holidays. one of which was the curtain call page. she devoted 11 pages to the various 'racists' and their antics.. about 3 more pages were pleasant.. and the balance is all about her misery.. in great detail.
The final page is l'il mariah solo, singing 'all I want for christmas is you'... Appearantly to her older for fabulous self... because it makes no sense otherwise.
I saw a reviewer said that this reads like a child's nightmare.. That's spot on.
I am not a fan of racial messages hidden in Children's books. Some celebrities have a reputation for being political.. I get it. their art reflects that. But that's not what is expected in a kids book from a seemingly non-political musician.
Avoid this book, and return it before it's too late!

If I could, I’d give this book no stars but for the great illustrations, I am happy to give at least one.
The book starts off with this super weird letter to herself which, if you’re a fan, you know is authentically to her little self. I was OK with the All I Want for Christmas movie being part of her inner child healing but the letter in this book is just too much. It doesn’t even fit in the story.
Then there’s the story.
The story reads like a Christmas horror film for children. I absolutely regret not reading it before I started reading it with my daughter (5yo). She was into the storyline per se but it was way too scary without enough to balance it - and definitely not enough to balance it interestingly or sensically. The whole storyline is depressing and random, and reads more like a terrifying dream of odd random events.
Then there’s the writing quality. I want to believe that the publication was rushed but the illustrations are magnificent so that certainly couldn’t have been the case.
Any hardcore Mariah fan has great pride in her writing her own music lyrics but man, she just really missed the mark here. Like I mentioned above, the storyline is incredibly bizarre and too scary in my opinion. But then there’s the actual text: it’s basically just a long list of negative adjectives in every single sentence. Sometimes it rhymes, sometimes it doesn’t. And the word choices were just completely off. For example, I found myself nearly gasping when the word “sucks” was in there and I changed it quickly in the moment when read aloud. If she wants to write such storylines and use such words, set your eyes on a book for adolescents but this is too much for children.
I will never read this story to my child again, I will be returning it, and I hope that Mariah stops doing everything except her Christmas concerts so freaking rushed and lazy. You have enough money to hire the greatest manager and PR manager. Use it! You are the GOAT but please don’t spoil your reputation with small crap like this.
(Guess I needed to vent.)
