105 Annabelle Sketch

Annabelle is an object in the Freeform series Cruel Summer. It is a gun owned by Martin Harris, that he brought to the basement the day before Kate Wallis was rescued by the police. The memory of Annabelle was so traumatic for Kate that she repressed it and was left stunned at the sheer mention of it on her therapy tapes.

Description[]

History[]

1993[]

On October 3, 1993, Martin comes downstairs with a small wooden box. He admits that he tried to find another way for this to end but there isn’t one. Kate puts down the book she’s reading and stands up. She tells him they can find another way. He reveals the police came to his house today, so there’s only a matter of time before they come back with a search warrant. He opens the box to show a gun which he removes. He introduces Kate to Annabelle, a family heirloom. Kate asks why he brought the gun. It’s the one that his father used. Kate asks if he’s going to kill her. He apologizes for the things he’s done and what he’s about to do. She begs him not to kill her. He tells her to go live her life and see the world as they wanted, to know she was truly loved by him. He tells her goodbye and puts the gun to his head, which scares her. A moment of silence passes before he slowly lowers the gun before dropping it to the floor. Martin then solemnly walks to the steps and lets out a scream, banging his hands on the walls as he shouts. She picks up the gun, cocks it, and points it at him. He looks at her and tells her to listen to him. He was wrong as it’s the two of them and they will find a way. He asks for the gun back as she doesn’t want to do this. She loves him. Kate flashes through their moments together. The good and the bad. After a long minute, Kate pulls the trigger and shoots Martin. She drops the gun and begins to cry. She kneels next to Martin’s body. She sat with him all night as she felt paralyzed and guilty for loving him. And hating him. And killing him.[1]

1994[]

According to Kate Wallis's recount of the day before her rescue, she was visited by Martin Harris, her kidnapper. She knew instantly that something was different, wrong, even. That was when he introduced her to Annabelle.[2]

During her therapy session on August 29, 1994, Kate's therapist asks what she remembers about Annabelle. Kate claims she doesn't remember anything, then corrects that she doesn't want to remember. She grips the armchair as her breath quickens. The doctor tells her to breathe and Kate proclaims she wants to stop.[3]

1995[]

On July 15th, 1995, Kate Wallis went on a hunting trip with her family and their friends. She joined them around a campfire where she offered to tell a scary story in the place of Hank Stevenson. She spoke about a woman named Annabelle. Though the story majorly reflected Kate's life and the world she was in now, certain pieces of the tale were misplaced.

Annabelle found herself alone in the woods at night. She was on a hunting trip with her family who were hypocrites. Rod and Joy agree that the story might not be appropriate, and Kate subtly said that people had secrets, a thirst for gossip, and accusations. Little Annabelle was alone until she wasn’t. A man joined her, one that grown-ups trusted, so Annabelle trusted him too. That trust led to something unspeakable which put blood on the grown-up’s hands too as they were responsible for what happened to Annabelle. She warned their stories better be straight because Annabelle had hers.

The next day, Kate decided to listen to her old therapy tapes from her time with Dr. Sylvia Parks in the presence of her best friend Mallory Higgins. She fast-forwarded through the beginning of the session until she reached a part where she spoke on Martin coming downstairs. In the tape, Kate remembered meeting Annabelle through Martin, who had been acting oddly. With the mention of Annabelle's name, Kate freezes and begins to disassociate, unable to hear Mallory who asked her if she was okay. She merely looked at her with tears.[2]

On July 29th, Kate continues to listen to her therapy tapes about Martin. She admits to having lied to the cops about having known Martin before she was kidnapped. She lied as she thought it would make her look bad. Sylvia tells her that she’s a minor and can’t be at fault for anything that happened, so there is no "looking bad" in the situation. In the present, Kate sketches Annabelle’s name.[4]

By August 29th, Kate is still trying to decipher her therapy tapes, and listens back to when her therapist asks her about Annabelle. Kate can’t believe that entire memory is gone and worries about what else she can’t remember. Mallory suggests that she give herself a break but Kate doesn’t want to.[3]

On October 3rd, Kate grows frustrated with her lack of memory and decides to return to Martin's house with Jeanette Turner so they can find out the truth about what happened. After learning that Jeanette didn't see her through the window as Kate previously believed, she asks Jeanette to come to the basement with her so she can remember all the things she tried to forget.[1]
