Denison rolls in sweep over Kenyon

Calderon hits for the cycle, ties single-season home run record in game two

GRANVILLE, Ohio (April 28, 2024) – Denison University softball improved to 7-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference following a doubleheader sweep over Kenyon College on Sunday afternoon. The Big Red took the first game 8-2 before earning a 9-0 win in five innings in game two.

Game 1 (Denison 8, Kenyon 2):
  • Each of the first four batters of the game reached for the Big Red as Indy Workman led off with a single up the middle, Brooke Surbaugh singled through the right side and Alessandra Groome and Annabelle Calderon both drew a walk, the latter of which scored Workman for the first run of the game.
  • Two batters later, a three-run double down the right field line by Leilah Ferrari cleared the bases and made it a four-run first inning for the Big Red.
  • In the circle, Surbaugh (8-6) pitched a 1-2-3 top of the first inning and then got a lineout double play right back to herself to end the top of the second inning.
  • Workman made her presence felt again with a one-out double to left center field in the bottom of the second inning before scoring again on a two-out RBI-single also to left center by Groome.
  • Kenyon got on the board after scoring on a wild pitch in the third inning and then made it 5-2 with a two-out RBI-double to left center field in the fourth inning before Workman again stepped up for the Big Red and delivered a leadoff triple to right center field in the bottom of the fourth. Two batters later, Workman scored on an RBI-groundout by Groome to make it 6-2 Big Red.
  • Madilyn Moffitt pitched a 1-2-3 top of the fifth inning and got back-to-back strikeouts to leave two runners in scoring position in the top of the sixth.
  • A leadoff hit by pitch by Workman in the bottom of the sixth was followed by a two-run home run to left field by Surbaugh to put the finishing touches on the scoring.
  • Moffitt followed with another 1-2-3 inning in the seventh to earn her fourth save of the season.
  • Surbaugh finished with four innings pitched allowing five hits, two runs, no walks and four strikeouts while Moffitt tossed three innings and allowed just two hits, no runs, no walks and three strikeouts.
  • Workman finished 3-for-3 with four runs scored, a double and a triple from her spot at the top of the lineup while Calderon was also 3-for-3.
  • Surbaugh was 2-for-4 offensively with two runs scored and a two-run home run while Ferrari was 2-for-4 with a three-run double.
  • Groome added two RBI's as well.

Game 2 (Denison 9, Kenyon 0):
  • Denison hit a pair of triples in the opening inning, starting with a one-out triple to right center by Jordyn Maurer before a two-run triple also to right center by Calderon.
  • Denison made its lead 3-0 in the second inning after a two-out walk by Brianna Gonzalez, who then stole second base and scored on an RBI-double to left field by Workman.
  • Groome led off the bottom of the third inning with a single to left field before a two-run homer to center field by Calderon. It was her 10th home run of the season, tying the program record originally set by Brie Berkopec in 2010 and matched by Erica Evans in 2011.
  • Later on in the third inning, a two-out RBI-single to right field by Clara Wolff made it 6-0 after three innings.
  • In the fifth inning, a one-out single up the middle by Gonzalez and back-to-back walks by Workman and Maurer loaded the bases before an RBI-walk by Groome and then a two-run double down the right field line by Calderon to end the game early.
  • Calderon was the star of game two offensively, hitting for the cycle and finishing 4-for-4 with six RBI's on a two-run triple, a two-run home run and a walk-off two-run double.
