Happy Gilmore 2 is a go. The movie will be a sequel to Adam Sandler's 1996 comedy, in which he played the title role as a hockey player who becomes an unlikely golf champion. The movie gave the Saturday Night Live star one of his first major lead roles in a motion picture and provides one half of the name of his production company Happy Madison, which gets the other half from his earlier 1995 comedy Billy Madison. Despite the movie's iconic status, in the intervening decades, the sequel Happy Gilmore 2 has so far failed to come to fruition.
At the Netflix Upfront presentation, the streaming service announced that their next collaboration with Adam Sandler will be Happy Gilmore 2. Check out their Twitter announcement below:
The post includes an image of the title character screaming at a golf ball while it rolls toward the hole, confirming that Sandler is set to "reprise his iconic role in a brand new movie." While rumors that the project was in development have previously circulated prior to Sandler announcing it was in development, the streamer has finally officially confirmed that they are moving forward with the movie.
Happy Gilmore 2 Is A First For Adam Sandler And Netflix
The Long-Awaited Happy Gilmore Sequel Is Unusual In One Major Way
Sandler reprising his Happy Gilmore character for Netflix isn't necessarily a surprise. The producer-star has been a mainstay of Netflix original comedies since 2015 thanks to a deal that was inked between Happy Madison and the streamer the year before. In fact, with the exception of Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation and Uncut Gems, every movie starring Adam Sandler since that point has had involvement from Netflix in some capacity. Below, see a breakdown of all of Sandler's Netflix movies:

A Sandler-Netflix title being a sequel isn't entirely unheard of, either. Though the comedy movies that he has produced for the streamer have largely been standalones up to this point, in 2023 he reunited with co-star Jennifer Aniston for a sequel to their hit comedy-thriller Murder Mystery. However, Happy Gilmore 2 is still unique among these other Netflix titles, because it is the only movie on the roster to be a sequel to a title that wasn't already a Netflix property.
Because it was likely more difficult to wrangle the rights to make Happy Gilmore 2, it remains to be seen if they make further sequels to older Sandler movies. If it proves to be a hit, as it very well might considering the fact that the Happy Gilmore Rotten Tomatoes score provides one of his rare Fresh ratings, this could mean further sequels are on the horizon. Considering the fact that sequels have never been made to many Sandler movies including Big Daddy, 50 First Dates, and Billy Madison, this could prove to be a fruitful avenue for the partnership.
