A Guide to the Top Six Rooms at the New teamLab Borderless

During its first full inaugural year (2019) at its previous location in Odaiba, Tokyo, teamLab hosted 2.3 million guests, making it the number one 'museum' dedicated to a solo artist or art collective. teamLab Planets, their second Tokyo location, also garnered ample attention—it was the fifth most globally searched-for museum on Google in 2023.

The original teamLab Borderless museum closed on 31 August 2022 due to redevelopment work at Odaiba Palette Town. This new location marks more than a mere change of address; it signifies a profound new chapter in teamLab's journey.

Differing from the linear path of teamLab Planets, the teamLab Borderless experience offers an unguided exploration of digital art installations. Visitors can wander freely, revisiting and immersing themselves in evolving pieces, unveiling fresh perspectives with each encounter with the ever-shifting tapestry of digital art.

Familiar artworks from the Odaiba site have undergone enhancements, courtesy of improved technology and lessons from the previous site, promising an enriched and more engaging experience for patrons.

Takeshi Yamada, head of recruitment at TeamLab, told us, "Technology is improving—the projectors, the sensors, the computers. So, the resolution or quality should be updated if we try to do the same artwork and bring it to the new TeamLab. We also updated how the animals move, making them even more borderless for this next one. So it's a new experience compared with the previous address."

Here's a spotlight on a few of the standout installations:

Infinite Crystal World

Infinite Crystal World

Prepare to be transported into a realm of boundless wonder—hundreds of individually controlled LED lights. Suspended from the ceiling, and with the help of mirrors, they create the illusion of a crystalline universe expanding infinitely in all directions. Visitors' presence shapes light patterns as they move through the kaleidoscopic space, offering a personalized and immersive experience.

Bubble Universe: Physical Light, Bubbles of Light, Wobbling Light, and Environmental Light

Bubble Universe: Physical Light, Bubbles of Light, Wobbling Light, and Environmental Light

Within the Bubble Universe, myriad lights converge, each possessing distinct qualities—some resembling soap bubbles, others akin to wobbling masses of jelly, others emerging from the surrounding environment. These lights, both stationary and in motion, interact within the spheres, with each sphere catalyzing and creating countless variations. As observers engage with the installation, the non-physical lights within the spheres, such as those resembling jelly masses, become perceptible solely within our minds. Additionally, when a person pauses near a sphere, it radiates brightly. It emits a resonating tone, triggering a cascade of light that spreads to neighboring spheres in a continuous and mathematically determined pattern. This arrangement creates a mesmerizing dance of illumination. The artwork encapsulates the elegance of light's continuity, born from the interaction between individuals and the installation's lamps, inviting viewers to participate in its ever-evolving spectacle.

Light Sculpture Series

Light Sculpture Series

It's the most fabulous nightclub you've never visited. The scope of the Light Sculpture Series is astonishing—moving lights on floors, walls, and ceilings intersect to create a mesmerizing three-dimensional effect. Dynamic pieces like Birth and Light Vortex whisk you on a sensory journey combining music, light and motion. With each piece, the boundaries between art and reality blur.

Universe of Fire Particles Dissolving

Universe of Fire Particles Dissolving

The interplay of multilayered lines, those reaching towards us and others extending into the distance, forms a captivating depiction of flames that gradually dissolve. The resulting imagery is shaped by the focal point of one's own eyes, a focal point that dynamically shifts beyond individual control. Expanding on this concept, these intricate lines converge to weave a mesmerizing tapestry where flames flicker and transform before our eyes.

Each viewer's perception influences the evolving artwork, with focal points adjusting dynamically in response to their gaze. The boundaries between observer and creation blur. As the lines intertwine and morph, a fluid and ever-changing tableau emerges, prompting contemplation on the dynamic nature of perception and interpretation. This has to be seen to be believed.

Sketch Ocean

Sketch Ocean

Unleash your creativity in Sketch Ocean, where you can design sea creatures and watch them come to life in a vast digital aquarium. Bridging art, imagination, and environmental awareness, this interactive installation offers an enchanting experience for visitors of all ages.

You can then place an order using a drawing from Sketch Ocean and watch as your fish transforms into a tangible item right before your eyes. The fish you've drawn magically comes to life inside the Sketch Factory, disappearing into the printer and reemerging as a bespoke creation. Choose from original items, including tin badges, hand towels, T-shirts, or tote bags, each bearing your personalized design.

Amidst the creative process, the Solidified Sparks artwork within the Sketch Factory adds an extra layer of enchantment. Its random intervals of shining take on a new significance as they synchronize with the transformation of your artwork into a tangible memento of your TeamLab Borderless experience.

EN Teahouse

EN Teahouse

Experience a traditional Japanese tea ceremony reimagined through a digital lens. Amid tranquil surroundings, visitors can enjoy tea as digital flowers bloom in their cups, offering a moment of serenity in this immersive art experience. Tradition meets innovation in a harmonious blend—pun intended.

As patrons take a seat and place their order, a digital flower blooms within their teacup, its petals delicately unfolding in response to their presence. The interactive experience continues: with a simple hand wave over the teacup, the petals scatter gracefully, creating ripples of light and color that dance across the surface of the tea. This seamless integration of digital technology and traditional tea ceremony rituals creates a sensory journey that transcends the boundaries of art and culture and allows you to reflect on the intersection of tradition and modernity, where ancient customs are brought to life in a new and innovative way.
