Best Times To Visit Victoria & Vancouver Island

The best times to visit Victoria and Vancouver Island are March to May and September to November. The region sees some of the country's mildest weather and the driest summers, so while you might experience a light drizzle here and there, plan on comfortable temperatures in the spring and fall. Summer is by far the most popular time to visit thanks to the numerous festivals that take place in Victoria and across Vancouver Island. This area also welcomes a respectable number of winter travelers due to its proximity to Canada's prominent ski destination, Whistler. You'll enjoy the most whale sightings if you time your visit between April and October.

March-May

Spring is a pleasant time to tour Victoria and Vancouver Island. Winter frosts give way to cherry blossoms and azaleas, and the chilly cloud cover retreats to reveal more sunny skies. Average high temperatures range from the low 50s to the low 60s.

Key Events:

June-August

Summertime marks peak tourism season. Little rainfall and temperatures in the high 60s and low 70s make outdoor excursions – like biking, whale watching and vineyard touring – more inviting. The warmer months also usher in the island's festivals. But while there's plenty to do on Vancouver Island during the summer, be prepared for crowded streets and high room rates. It's a good idea to book at least three weeks in advance to ensure availability. If you're intent on seeing humpback whales, most sightings occur between August and December. Since the Butchart Gardens are in full bloom at this time, expect heavy congestion along the gardens' paths (plan an early morning or late afternoon visit to avoid the crowds).

Key Events:

September-November

Autumn on Vancouver Island can be chilly with temperatures ranging from the high 40s to the high 60s. And as winter approaches, rainfall increases. But as long as you pack a few cozy sweaters and an umbrella, you shouldn't worry about letting the weather get in the way of your agenda. The cooler temperatures drive away the throngs of summer tourists, so you can expect to find great deals on hotel rooms.

Key Events:

December-February

While the thought of spending winter in Canada might evoke a shiver, you shouldn't rule out an offseason trip to Vancouver Island. This British Columbia region experiences some of the mildest winters in the country with average highs resting in the low 40s. And because many travelers aren't willing to brave the colder months, you'll find reasonable room rates. Chances for precipitation are higher at this time of year, so bring your waterproof outerwear.
