Construction on Herbert Hoover Elementary School began in July, 1960 and the school opened for the first time in September, 1961. The school was dedicated on June 5, 1962. The first principal was Mr. Elvin G. Warfel.

Permission was sought from former President Herbert Hoover to use his name on the building. His grand-daughter and four of his great-grandchildren attended the dedication ceremony.

The building was constructed on a 60-acre tract owned by Fred Bunting. The land was purchased for $120,000, and was originally supposed to hold both an elementary school and a secondary school. 20 acres were reserved for the elementary school. The secondary school was never built. The library, gymnasium and third classroom wing were added in 1968. The school was closed in 1976, then reopened in 1986.

Hoover is the second largest of the District’s six elementary schools.

Approximately 675 students attend Hoover Elementary in grades K-4. The school serves families residing in the Langhorne and Levittown sections of Middletown Township, Penndel, Hulmeville and Langhorne Manor.

“In 2017, Herbert Hoover Elementary School was named a Title 1 School of Distinction by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. In 2017, Hoover also received an award for implementing the Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) program with fidelity.”
