A delicious twist on a Gothic classic, The Wife Upstairs pairs Southern charm with atmospheric domestic suspense, perfect for fans of B.A. Paris and Megan Miranda.

Meet Jane. Newly arrived to Birmingham, Alabama, Jane is a broke dog-walker in Thornfield Estates––a gated community full of McMansions, shiny SUVs, and bored housewives. The kind of place where no one will notice if Jane lifts the discarded tchotchkes and jewelry off the side tables of her well-heeled clients. Where no one will think to ask if Jane is her real name.

But her luck changes when she meets Eddie Rochester. Recently widowed, Eddie is Thornfield Estates’ most mysterious resident. His wife, Bea, drowned in a boating accident with her best friend, their bodies lost to the deep. Jane can’t help but see an opportunity in Eddie––not only is he rich, brooding, and handsome, he could also offer her the kind of protection she’s always yearned for.

Yet as Jane and Eddie fall for each other, Jane is increasingly haunted by the legend of Bea, an ambitious beauty with a rags-to-riches origin story, who launched a wildly successful southern lifestyle brand. How can she, plain Jane, ever measure up? And can she win Eddie’s heart before her past––or his––catches up to her?

With delicious suspense, incisive wit, and a fresh, feminist sensibility,
The Wife Upstairs flips the script on a timeless tale of forbidden romance, ill-advised attraction, and a wife who just won’t stay buried. In this vivid reimagining of one of literature’s most twisted love triangles, which Mrs. Rochester will get her happy ending?

This is the first novel I've read by this author. The story was good and there were some unexpected plot twists but I did take one star off because while the story itself was engrossing, I found it hard to like any of the characters. I think the book would have been even more enjoyable if there was at least one person to root for.

I did not like the main character “Jane”. Over all I thought the storyline just ok. I would not read this book twice. The hardcover is very nice.

This was pretty good! I didn’t really feel for Jane because she was a user and a thief and pretty much hated everyone around her, and her relationship with Eddie felt completely fake. Which I guess it was, really. I was happy with the ending. The book lays most of it out for you, and I knew it couldn’t be that simple. Trust me, it’s not. Good ending, and believable plot overall.

WOW! What a fantastic book! A 🌟🌟🌟🌟 read for me! This was my first time reading a book by author Rachel Hawkins and let me tell you she did not disappoint. Going in blind on this book, I was hooked from the very beginning. Just when I would think that I had the story line figured out🤯 there would be another twist! The ending was a little predictable but really the only thing missing for me was…what actually happened to Bea and Eddie? An absolute page turner and I can’t wait for my next Rachel Hawkins book to arrive!

I liked the twist, easy read. There wasn’t a character I clung to or rooted for but was relaxing to read on the beach.

One of my favourite reads of 2021! The beginning was a bit slow for me but it didn’t take long to get sucked in and I ended up finishing the book in two days. I got to a point where I couldn’t put it down! The twists and turns are highly worth the read.

This is the first time I’ve read anything by this author but after reading the reviews of this book, I had to try it. So far it’s a page turner and I will most likely read others by her. I’m half way thru and honestly the “F” bombs are overly done, like every page or every other page and from every single character. Other than that, it’s a good mystery-thriller that I would recommend. On that note, I just skip over the “F” bombs lol

Well I have devoured a lot of thrillers and I just love good writing. The story or concept can remain the same, how we handle a plot and how gripping the writing style is , is what makes a good story line. With a lot of hesitation I picked up this book. what a plot and amazing writing style.. the twists and turns are so gripping that I have just not been able to do anyting besides reading,

A fun read & page turner!

What I really enjoyed about The Wife Upstairs is that I never knew who to root for, who to hate or love, or who to believe. I could never be totally sure about who the good or the bad guy was. That’s what made this Novel so enjoyable & super entertaining to me!

Rachel Hawkins Book left me on edge and suspicious of literally all characters. IMO, there were plenty of twists and turns and I thought the ending was a little far fetched BUT still great! I also enjoyed that the story is written in 3 points of views, which always works for me.

✅well-written storyline
✅interesting characters
✅plenty of twists twists
I liked it! A true Page turner !
