After the High School Yearbook, Sunday Newspaper Parody and the Encyclopedia of Humor I thought this was one of the better Lampoon spin-offs but strangely it doesn't seem to get too many mentions in media about the NatLamCo. Edited by Tony Hendra and particularly well designed by Michael Gross it deals, over 192 pages, with a highly subjective history of the Nation.
There is no Contents page instead the reader is thrown into a series of chapters: The System; God; The Almighty Dollar; Guns; Foreigners; Fun; Real Estate; Know-how and after the index at the back a rather unusual four-page guide to the 2076 Centennial Expo.
The magazine regulars like Henry Beard, Tony Hendra, Sean Kelly, Brian McConnachie, Gerry Sussman, John Weidman and artists Bruce McCall, Warren Sattler all contribute some wonderful copy (tons of it) and illustrations. Plenty of others also contributed great material. To make the whole thing complete there are ads but fortunately they have been created for the book to make the whole thing hang together.
The only downside is the use of newsprint for about half the pages (my copy has faded round the edge of the newsprint pages) the rest are on magazine stock to carry the color photos and art. In fact all the material really should have been in a proper book with hard covers like the Encyclopedia of Humor. This is still as funny as its first appearance in 1975 and well worth searching out for a good clean copy.

National Lampoon The 199th Birthday Book Paperback – Illustrated, January 1, 1975
by
National Lampoon's Editors
(Author)
National Lampoon as usual manages to offend everyone at some point, usually with pointed, (or pointless) humor (so called). A completely irreverent cartoon issue. No obscenity or true porn.

I lived on National Lampoon in the 1970's, the condition of this magazine took me right back to my youth, thanks!
