Lovely Runner: Episodes 1-2

Squeeing straight out the gate, Lovely Runner is off to a cute, funny, fresh start that I can only say good things about. Our resident fangirl and her idol crush turn out to be more than meets the eye in this time-slip drama, which has perfect casting, solid storytelling, and enough pretty to sustain us on dopamine hits alone for the next eight weeks. If you’re not already watching, run to it!

Lovely Runner: Episodes 1-2

With one of our leads a manic mess and the other a flustered flirt, this show is pulling up my happiness capacity to new levels. Kim Hye-yoon and Byun Woo-seok play off each other in the most hilarious and heartbreaking ways that I really can’t imagine anyone else in these roles. (And with Byun Woo-seok on my screen, why would I want to?)

The drama starts on the serious side, with one character coming to terms with the loss of her ability to walk and the other settled on suicide, but the honey-sweet storytelling is already cradling us toward a happier ending. With the amount of heart clutching happening on my side, I have no idea how I’ll make it until next Monday.

Lovely Runner: Episodes 1-2

We start in July 2009 in the depths of despair with IM SOL (Kim Hye-yoon) in the hospital following an accident that will confine her to a wheelchair for the rest of her life. On the radio, a new idol group called Eclipse is being interviewed, and they’re calling one lucky fan who will get to speak to the members.

RYU SUN-JAE (Byun Woo-seok) is the lead vocalist (and visual, omo) of Eclipse and he’s calling Sol’s phone from the radio show. She picks up, but she’s never heard of the group and is irate that such happy people exist in the world when there are people like her who are suffering so much.

However, it’s pretty obvious that Sun-jae already knows her somehow. “Thank you for being alive,” he says. “Stay alive. Because it’s so nice outside.” To which Sol responds by sobbing her little heart out.

We then skip to New Year’s Eve 2022, where Sol has adjusted to her new life on wheels and become an ardent Eclipse fan with an expensive Sun-jae bias. Her whole room is decked out in merch — including a life-size Sun-jae cutout, which she sends kisses to on her way out the door to see him in person at her first-ever Eclipse concert.

En route to the show, we get a little exposition about the past. Before she was an Eclipse fangirl, Sol had a crush on some other boy back in high school — and didn’t even realize that Sun-jae freakin’ lived across the street! WHAT?! But now she’s trying to make up for lost time by looking at Sun-jae’s high school yearbook pictures (to which she has the appropriate response: “Eeeeee! Omo, omo, omo, omo.” Yes, girl. Yes.)

Lovely Runner: Episodes 1-2

But all this happiness and optimism is about to come skittering down when a string of rough events befall our heroine right in a row. First, she gets called for an internship interview that she’s been waiting for — and even leaves the pre-concert events to attend — only to be told that the facilities aren’t wheelchair accessible and so they won’t hire her.

Still, our live-wire leading lady doesn’t let it get her down. She returns to the concert, ready to perk up her spirits, but realizes she’s lost her ticket and can’t get inside the venue. And yet, this girl still puts on her Sun-jae headband and parties outside by herself while the music plays inside.

And inside, Sun-jae and the boys put on a show that contains so many outfit changes and sweat-dampened dimples I’m about to drop dead. If this drama aims to speak straight to the fangirl heart, it sure knows what it’s doing.

After the show, the bad luck continues. Sol’s phone drops on the ground and cracks and then her wheelchair runs out of battery while she’s trying to cross a crazy-long bridge — alone, in the freezing-cold snow. I mean, this day could not get any worse. And so, she cries.

Lovely Runner: Episodes 1-2

But just then, Sun-jae is driving by and sees her. He gets out of his van in the most idol-y way possible, with an umbrella that he holds over her head against the elements. She looks up in disbelief and he coolly asks what she’s doing. “Is your wheelchair broken?” (How he’s able to make even a line like that sound flirtatious is beyond me, but he pulls it off.)

Sol is still crying but this time it’s happy tears. She’s smiling and stuttering out that she’s a fan, and she wants to say how grateful she is for what he said to her all those years ago on the radio — he made her want to live again. But she doesn’t say it (and he doesn’t know the impression he made on her life).

He offers her a ride just as her friend rolls up to offer her a ride too (ugh, timing), and so she goes with her friend (in the world’s most questionable decision ever) — but gives Sun-jae a small jar of something that she knows he likes. In the moment, it’s not clear exactly what she gave him, but it’s a clue that we need to hold onto for later.

We then move on to darker terrain. We learned before the concert that Sun-jae wants to retire as an idol but everyone around him is angry for it and trying to stop him. When we see him after he parts with Sol, there are bottles of pills scattered around his hotel room and he’s standing on the balcony looking ready to jump. There’s a splash in the hotel pool, and the next thing we know uri Sun-jae is being pronounced dead on January 1, 2023.

Sol is one of the first to receive the news and she goes out to try to find him at the hospital. On her way, she drops the watch she’s been wearing — which once belonged to Sun-jae (and she paid heaping money for). To retrieve it from the water where it fell, she throws herself out of her wheelchair and pulls her body along to get to it. There on the wet ground, sobbing and screaming to Sun-jae at his time of death, the watch goes haywire and Sol suddenly wakes up in 2008, in her high school classroom.

Lovely Runner: Episodes 1-2

Everything is just as it was back then. Her legs work. She’s in uniform at an all girl’s school. And Sun-jae is alive and well — and on the swim team at the boy’s school just across the way. (Oh I love this.) At first, Sol thinks she’s dreaming — so, why stay in class! She runs over to find Sun-jae at his swim meet and cries happy tears when she sees him, “Sun-jae-ah!” Sprinting, she grabs his wet, half-naked body in a hug and can’t be pushed away even when he tries. “It must have been so hard for you. I didn’t know how much pain you were in.” Then she looks at his face and tells him she loves him.

And well, that gets her dragged out by security.

The thing is, she can’t figure out why she’s not waking up. Maybe she’s actually dead? She settles on that idea and when she sees Sun-jae again later in the street, she thinks he’s a ghost too. “Let’s live together!” she yells, meaning “let’s stay alive together,” but he thinks she means “let’s move in together” and calls for a taxi to high-tail it out of there.

And here we have our push-pull setup that just keeps getting funnier. Each time Sol tries to get close to Sun-jae, she does something to repel him (and there’s a hilarious graphic on the screen to show how far away he’s getting from her every time she messes up). But Sol can’t be deterred because she’s decided to stick by Sun-jae’s side and stop him from thinking bad thoughts in order to prevent his death.

After we see them stealing glances at each other in a rainy doorway (squee-level feels!) and squabbling back and forth about one thing after another, we learn one rule of this time-skip world: there’s no talking about the future. Each time Sol tries to tell Sun-jae about what will happen to him, the whole world stops around her and no one hears what she says. She’ll have to develop other means.

Sol realizes that Sun-jae loves swimming, but she knows that he stopped after a shoulder injury in high school. She thinks that if she can prevent him from competing until his shoulder is healed, she can keep him on the team, and maybe make him happy and save his life. She goes to great lengths (like hiding in the locker room hamper — and getting caught!) to stop him from competing, but can’t seem to get through to him.

Sun-jae is getting all the more perplexed and upset by Sol following him around, but we can also see her fangirling is not one-sided. When she runs into the guy that used to be her crush back in high school, KIM TAE-SUNG (Song Geon-hee) — the guy she was so busy chasing around that she didn’t notice Sun-jae — the older and wiser Sol can’t understand what she saw in Tae-sung back then (“I used to think you were so hot, but you’re such a dork!”). But that does not stop Sun-jae from being jealous.

Lovely Runner: Episodes 1-2

So what is really up with Sun-jae? Everything becomes clear in a flashback near the end, after Sun-jae pulls Sol out of the way of oncoming traffic. She’s traumatized from the accident that hasn’t even happened yet in this timeline, and she collapses in his arms — in an incredibly beautiful shot where he hugs her in the rain (water is a big recurring theme in this drama, from rain to pools).

It turns out that the first time Sun-jae ever saw Sol, it was raining, and she’s the one that put the umbrella over his head (Nice touch. I love this). She also gave him a couple of candies — the same ones that are in the jar she gives him in the future.

That is to say, Sun-jae started liking those candies because she gave them to him. And all those years later, as a fangirl, she knows he likes them, but has no idea it’s because of her. He’s been harboring a crush on this girl since high school — before she was even a fan — and called her on the phone that day from the radio station because he was legit happy she was alive. Can I fill the rest of this page with nothing but hearts, please?

Given that this boy is crushing so hard — and Sol has been ignoring him up until the point she goes back in time — it makes sense that he’s confused and so reluctant to show any interest. He doesn’t want to get his heart broken!

And so, we’ve got a conflict. Sol wants to get through to Sun-jae, to save his life the same way he saved hers, and she has no idea how to do it, given that she can’t tell him what will happen in the future. What methods will she devise? The last image of Episode 2 is a clue.

We see the scene of Sun-jae’s hotel room after his death. Next to the jar of candy that Sol gave him, a photo suddenly appears of our two leads together. It looks like the easiest way for Sol to change the future is to simply be by his side. Of course, she’s not going to realize that for a while — overthinking how to save him, instead of seeing that she herself is the answer. And our hero will do what heroes do and wait it out until she remembers him. This has the makings of an epic love story and we’re only in Week 1!

I will just lay out my adoration for this drama right here. I love everything about it. Everything! The leads are cute, funny, beautiful, and amazingly well-suited to play off each other. The story is intricate and well-weaved. The shots are lovely. The rain scenes are heart-melting. And I just can’t wait to see more of all of it.

I thought this was mostly going to be about putting the audience in the shoes of a fangirl so we could all live out our dreams of meeting Byun Woo-seok, but it’s a lot deeper than that and it knows just how to hit the heart buttons by switching from funny fangirling to serious subjects in a split second. More please!

It is funny/ironic/whatever that the first episode of Lovely Runner featured an eclipse on the day an eclipse happened haha. Honestly, I was a bit taken out of it cause of the lack of solar glasses haha
Then again I was told it was safe to look at a TOTAL eclipse without glasses.

After learning this was based on a webtoon, I was tempted to look for it to see what happens but I shall resist haha. I'm just so curious and hungry for more of this show.
I think that this is one of those shows where rewatching after more is revealed will give added appreciation for what's come before. For example, I'm not 100% sure if Sun Jae recognized Sol over the phone or when he met on her bridge but after watching episode 2, those interactions hit differently.

Also one of the reasons I wasn't sure about Sun Jae's memory of her is because Sol's memory was portrayed as bad(?). She didn't remember her first crush/fan/stan focus so I just thought too/so much time had passed that maybe his memory was hazy too. It's probably a dumb leap but it's what came to mind.

Speaking of that crush, I wonder if/how he's related to her accident. I think he was the blurry image shown in her memory of it and the fact that they only alluded to him during the original future timeline makes me think he plays a bigger role in things somehow.

It's funny how she time traveled one day after she confessed to the guy when she didn't even remember who he was haha. Her whole interaction, with the hindsight perspective, was amusing to me.

The thing I like most about the episodes was the second hand embarrassment haha. That always made me chuckle. Sticking her fingers in his nostrils haha

I think the show has done a good job of establishing why Sol is such a devoted fangirl.

I actually think she forgot her first crush because it is 15 years later and I couldn't even tell you some of my friends from 15 years ago. It was a crush and her accident overwhelmed everything else.

In dramas, people ALWAYS remember their first crushes. They're even still so into them that can't possibly move on to other people.

I figured that just showed how he was unimportant to her in the grand scheme of things.

I agree that the accident eclipsed everything else in her up to that point.

Every personally I think we all remember our high school crushes? of course we might not remember their faces but some memory remains.. Of course in dramas people are still in love with them even in their 30s. But in her case, the accident changed so much that she probably never revisited the old memories, so it makes sense.

Lovely runner is indeed lovely LOL.
It were very good 2 eps. The main characters are so alive and well acted so you are rooting for them right in the spot.
I think there is more in this story above romance bcs of the incident after which Sol end up in wheelchair.
I liked every single character in this drama and pace is also quite good.
Really looking forward to Mondays now ;)

This was fun!

1. I really like how the story connected them. Sometimes fangirling is just that. A little light in the darkness.

And I'm sure we all understand her desperation to do the same for him. To give him a little of light... But omo. My girl, I get it, but you better put your shirt together. Why did common sense stayed in 2023?
If you don't want to give "first days as a sasaeng" vibes, you better stop telling lies. You're bad at it.

It's obvious our girl didn't watch kdramas in the OG timeline. 😂 She's all over the place.

If "going back in time to save my favorite idol/character" is a new trend, I'm here for it. I just which Sol had a little help from her sunbae from Love for Love's Sake. That dude even had the ML chasing for him, while Sol is keeps kicking her ML too the other side of the room.

Even if the ML likes her and wants to be with her, she's being so weird he can't. 😭😂😂

I feel like the 13 years they lived were a dream, because this girl is giving 30 but 17 vibes. You all sure she wasn't in a coma?

2. I'm curious about the ML and his relationship with his dad, and his relationship with the members of Eclipse, and his reasons behind his decision. He's such a nice kid, I really hope that whatever that happened in 2009 to break him like that changes. I don't think it was the shoulder/swimming...

And what happened during his 5-years break? Why didn't he retired back then?
And when/how did he loose his watch?

This guy is just a question mark. I like that.

3. I feel like we have a really cute show ahead of us. Sol and her family are sweet and fun. They're so bright and energetic!
The ML is very cute too.
The leads have great chemistry!

And I want the SL to become besties with them? High school dramas need friendship, imo.

Anyway, I really like this show. Great energy to start the week!

4. Is it me or the music in this show sounds old? Except for that second they played Genie (Yuri's cameo was everything), nothing really sounds like something from 2009.
The track they play when they show "the distance" between the leads sounds like something from the 80's.
I'm not complaining, it just confuses me. LOL

I liked Eclipse's songs. I wasn't expecting that type of ballad for their debut song, tho. Hahaha.

Even though they said her name, I originally didn't recognize who she was haha. I've never seen her in her "idol" look.

And at that point, it was supposed to be 2009, was Girl Generation at the peak of their powers then?

Absolutely!! Travelling back to 2008 she is now a crazy mixture of starstruck fan plus desperation to "save" Sun-Jae plus attraction to the teen Sun-Jae (because obviously) plus inability to tell jim the "truth" or about any future events. Sol is also not very good at spinning tales and keeping getting flustered and locaqious and dumbstruck all the at the same time resulting in her hilarious antics. 😂

2

That debut song is a love song for Sol. 😍 I'm almost possibly totally sure.

So, so, so, so good this show! I was totally charmed and touched from the get go with no notes because this show strikes the perfect balance between charm, quirk, story and heart. The chemistry of the leads is amazing and their timing--comedic and romantic--is impeccable. Kim Hye Yoon has that X factor that infuses Sol with spunk and emotional depth that just makes you want to adore her, root for her and watch what happens. Byun Woo Seok as Sun Jae ah (because really now we can't hear that and not call him that) is great in his ability to receive that energy of Sol and show all the conflicting emotions of confusion, curiosity and awe.

It's so hard to put into words how and why drama works because it would be like dissecting magic, and I, for one, don't want to do that. There were so many funny scenes--the swimming meet hug, the fingers up the nose, the bus to school-- but they are also infused with heart such that I was laughing and touched at the same time. I want them to continue this magic, and I am grateful to have a drama where I can trust that thing they do and have not a single "what if they did this? or why did they do that?" triggered. Thank you, Lovely Runner, I am in your capable hands.

Back to the show. That last reveal of him being in love with her added more depth and squee factor to a drama I was already in love with at this point.
I have a hypothesis that he didn't injure his shoulder at a competition, but when he saved her from that accident and that he became an idol for her.

I love love the first two episodes! Sol is just so adorable, their story is all sort of swoony and Sun Jae harboring a crush on her first is wonderful icing on the cake. I am fervently hoping this will have a happy ending with Sol and Sun Jae getting to live out their lives together until old age.
Of course it will not be all rainbows yet since there is still the mystery of her accident and his in the future to figure out. I get a feeling that Sun Jae was the one that saved her. But I wonder why her Mom is not talking about it at all years later.
This show is a keeper and I hope it continues to be good until the last episode.

I really liked this drama but... I feel like the reveal at the end kind of ruined the tension for me? I don't know, I guess I like romances that show emotional development of romantic feelings and some question of "will they or won't they?" That's why I often am disappointed by dual POV romance novels where you learn that both characters are really into each other. Or even if they'd held out a little bit longer in revealing his feelings, I really was enjoying the angst. Also, like, he has every valid reason to avoid her. The friend request rejection made perfect sense to me, lol.

I still like it and I'm gonna continue watching it, but that ep 2 ending sort of deflated the excitement I was feeling.

I see what you're saying but for me, one of the things that initially made me less interested in this drama is that I didn't want to watch a bunch of episodes where the FL makes a fool of herself over and over again because she seems like a loony stalker. But because it has already been revealed that he had feelings before she did, those scenes were much less painful for me.

See your point, but had another effect on me. For me, he needs to already like her to not immediately run for the hills by her fangirl behaviour. Furthermore, he's going to have such a gloriously muddly time trying to work out why a girl who was indifferent at the start has suddenly become so into him overnight. He has a reason to stick around, a reason to forgive her excesses, a reason to try and learn/understand. They're both invested and I really like that.

The story won't make sense if he too wasn't interested in her. It really ups the ante.

I know. I was a little disappointed myself. I love me some romantic angst. 😅 But I think of romantic tension not only as do they or don’t they like each other, but also can they overcome obstacles to be together. Here, they have so much to go up against, so to be honest I expect a fair bit of angst up ahead esp. given that her accident and his death set this up. A much darker dramatic question lies at the heart of the show.

This show packs all the distinctive tropey charms of a teen idol romance kdrama in one appealing, heart-clutching (to use @Dramaddictally's terminology) story that even made me, a woman who is decidedly NOT a fangirl, and who finds kpop super cringey, squee.

Because I'm not a fangirl, I often struggle with scenes of women (especially women in their 30s) losing their minds over a member of a boy band, even if he's as handsome and charismatic as Byun Woo-seok. I just . . . can't with the cardboard cutouts, headbands, and other juvenile signs of obsession. But this one pulled me in with the backstory of how Sol became a rabid fan. Because Sun Jae quite literally made her want to live after her accident, it makes sense that she would become so devoted to him and the band. I also loved how the show slowly revealed the ways that Sol had already affected Sun Jae (although it's also so typical of this genre that even a very understandable, age-appropriate act like a 19 year old boy hiding a copy of "Basic Instinct" under his bed had to ultimately be given a completely vanilla explanation). This world the drama is depicting is pure fantasy, but it does have enough intricacy and intelligence to make me want to happily follow wherever these characters leads.

The height difference, scenes involving rain and water more generally, and any time Sun-jae steals glances at Sol all work together to create a very swoony watch.

I do have a few quibbles.

Why is it that with Tae-sung, Sol seemed very much like her 30-something self, scolding him for smoking and rolling her eyes at his Jr. Don Juan antics but with Sun Jae she's back to acting like a teen with no impulse control or maturity?

Along the same lines, there was one missed opportunity for a hilarious reversal. When Sun Jae tries to get rid of Sol by opening the room to the workout room, thereby revealing a bunch of well developed male torsos, I really wish she had reacted like a more worldly, adult woman (even if we're supposed to believe that due to her accident, she's probably a virgin who has never even been kissed) rather than immediately covering up her eyes. Sol acting nonchalant, smiling in delight, or simply not reacting at all (like "Heh. 19 year old guys without their shirts on are soooo 15 years ago for me") would have been much funnier.

But still, I want more of these two together.

14
3
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think with Tae Sung she clearly see him as the teenage boy he is, while with Sun Jae, she grew up with him (literally, unknowingly) and figuratively, so for her, he is the same age as she is. So she is swoony for her favorite idol and hot for a guy her age. Plus she may be a 30 year old, but she still has teenage hormones.

Yes, I too wished for a bit more maturity from the returned Sol. It would anchor the show with some gravitas. But this is meant to be a fun high school romance and it sure got the memo (but be on high alert for late stage angst). Plus, KHY pulls it off so well just as she did in EY.

Started with a BANG, I love love love that he had a crush on her first. It makes the story more interesting and adds great texture to all the previous scenes before it. I was wondering why he was oddly jealous and now it makes sense. I think I am going to like this.

I am in love with this drama.. watched the first two episodes and then re-watched them.. You have to re-watch them to get the clues.. I am hoping Im Sol is not in a wheelchair in the future but because this is Kdrama land and because episode 1 hinted at it.. I think she loses her memories somehow.. I am not sure but I am guessing..

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Sun Jae was already crushing on our female lead.. and I am excited to watch their love story unfold..

So am wondering if in the original timeline, he leaves her alone because she had the accident and he doesn’t contact her out of guilt and grief which leads to his eventual suicide. It would have been lovely if they had connected much earlier, he could have helped her cope with her life-altering injury without ablism coming into play because of the timeslip and she could get to know him as the person who crushed on her. I know this wouldn’t have been made but still.

Yeah, hes connected to the accident somehow. Carrying some sort of guilt connected to it, as well as being at the accident scene and helping her. Mum is evasive about the person at the scene who helped her. He rings her at the hospital and she does not remember him. And then he stops to help her on the snowy night and he feels guilty about her being stuck in a wheelchair, and also sad that she cant remember him.

Interesting theory. It’s a drama so chances are extremely high it’s all connected.

Emma, what are the chances that like TW the accident can’t be prevented but they still can have wonderful lives? For example, she still ends up in a wheelchair but in this new trajectory they remain happily together?

Indy, an excellent supposition. Life is brutal and unforgiving when some accidents occur but it must be so hard for people with disabilities to constantly see, hear and experience their disabilities portrayed as tragedies and the world only paying lip service but not try to accommodate their needs (hurray for cultural, social and legal changes even if they are no where adequate). So, it would be a bittersweet but (for me) a welcome ending if your prediction comes true.

I'm thinking that maybe he (inadvertently) caused the accident, which is why he was there to save her; or more likely, blames himself for the accident because he arrived too late and then saved her after the accident occurred. The one reason I say that is that his suicide came after seeing her in the wheelchair.

Could be. All the medication though was used to convey that he was struggling with his health so his mental health could have been an ongoing concern.

Yeah, and when the suicide is first mentioned in the chat room one of the comments is something like "its not the first time". But Im still suspicious of that doorbell just before he dies.

3

So do you think he was pushed? That would be a different kettle of sadness.

2

I think he was pushed. Probably physically pushed, but definitely pushed emotionally by whoever turned up.

Come on! I have believed so much of the unbelievable in dramaland. But asking me to buy Sol did not notice Sun-jae under that baseball cap “disguise,” not even once during high school? Granted, it was a big school, but surely she spotted 1cm of Byeon Woo-seok's 189cm standing head above the crowd, with cheekbones that could cut ice, lips that could melt it and slurp it down. No, it defies all logic, even drama logic.

Other than that, cute, cute. It’s a bit childish for lil ol’ me but feels like the sparkly love child of Twinkling Watermelon and Extraordinary You. (Didn't KHY just slip back into that uniform like she never took it off?) Oh, and Some Day. With that last in mind, I have joined the manifestation circle formed by @lapislazulii for a happy ending.

PS Despite the BWS fangirling, wasn’t the 2ML fun? Poor fella, his heart’s gonna break unless we get a fun little quadrangle with Sol’s bestie.

@dncingemma just checked and MDL says MY GIRL (2005) is on Viki, Kocowa, Prime and AppleTV, so... Not mention it's totally is on YT in maaany snippets, this is a VERY beloved classic show. Don't just take my word for it, look with your own eyes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wv22IdveXmM

1

And I think they’re going for Kang Dong Won in the film Temptation of Wolves, down to casting an actor who looks like KDW 😁

2

@bbstl maybe both - the more meta, the better! Plus there aren't many actors who resemble young LJG (ironically, I've seen a few among cdrama pool). Btw, where is the guy who played his teen self in FOE? I don't think I've seen him in any dramas since.

1

Thanks. You assumed I don’t have regional availability issues which alas, I do.

0

@dncingemma oh, sorry! Not sure how people usually deal with that the right way unlike us here with our "nothing is EVER available" curse - VPN? *scratches head under corsair hat* Darknet had it too last time I checked...

2

Thanks again. I watched the Youtube clip though and it was cheesy!😂 I loved Hwang Inyeop’s acting more than the other two leads in “True Beauty” by a mile so I am biased towards his homage which was likely scripted and not just his interpretation but still. He should get props for that charming turn.
And, Sing Geonhee was incredibly charming in “Lovely Runner” so am not too cut up in not being able to watch “My Girl”.

2

@minniegupta1 yes! Classic tropey Hallyu romcom which did wonders to all 3 leads careers - tho in LJG's case it was a negative wonder... legend says to this very day when asked about a potential romcom role man always answers "perhaps, but only if the script is better than MY GIRL's one"))) It's really funny in the beginning, then turns dumb melo midway and ends rather underwhelming, esp if you catch SLS along the way (I will NEVER forgive writers for that disrespect!). But the humor is HYSTERICAL, had to give the show that.

@dncingemma extra cheese was THE thing back in the day! I even kind of miss it, nowadays romcoms are nowhere near this shamelessly fun.

HIY looked pretty charming in those bits of TRUE BEAUTY I saw, it's a shame his career went into weird direction afterwards - skills can be earned step by step, but having natural charm is a good start. Maybe he should join the "work in a weekender and gain experience" train?

3

@gikata Oooooohhhhhh My Girl is the LJG romcom you were referring to?!

Once upon a time, I had mentioned something about Lee Joon Gi saying he wanted to do romcoms or at least, contrary to popular belief, he wasn't adverse to do it and you mentioned he had done one in the past but the less mentioned about it, the better (or something like that).

After I watched Hero, I thought that was what you were alluding to since that was the only romcom (that I know of) where he was the lead.

I recently saw a clip of him on My Girl and I didn't even focus on his acting haha. I just thought about how "wow, they even had him fighting in this" haha. Then I thought his look, the hair & earrings, was copied by numerous men only to fail to compare to the original haha
(Sidenote: even if he's just doing it to be modest or humble or whatever, I kinda go 🙄 when he apologizes nowdays for the hassles men went through during this period of copying him and failing to attract the same level of appeal)

Another sidenote: is there any LJG project where he doesn't fight or dance?

1

@britney yep, it was MY GIRL! HERO was more of an investigation comedy, not romance-centered plot for sure (and neither writing nor FL's unimpressive acting made the love story there any memorable). He never did a purely romcom drama as ML to this very day. And the chances are getting slimmer and slimmer with each passing year...

It ain't his fault he's pretty, blame mother nature for going too far!))) In all seriousness, prior to THE KING AND THE CLOWN man was NOT considered an actor material for his looks at all - classically handsome tall macho dudes were in fashion at the time. Some unknown to history (which saved him from a lot of beating) moron even suggested that he should "fix" his perfect phoenix eyes first if he wants to ever have a shot at leading roles... Thankfully he was smarter than that. So I suppose he's both genuinely embarrassed by the whole situation (imagine going from "not handsome enough for this field" to a global beauty phenomenon and fashion icon nearly overnight!) and a tiiiny bit petty because I don't recall any of these "macho" MLs ever apologizing for setting a ridiculously narrow beauty standard that almost cost him his career and could've even ruin his face if he went along with the trend...

Ahaha, you just HAD to add dancing to the mix! Yep, to think of it, it's always either one of the two or both, which kinda tells you what kind of actor he is - the one much more proud of his athleticism and physical effort put into his roles than his face card. Perhaps once he's too old for heavy action we'll get even more impressive purely dramatic actor LJG, wouldn't put it past him at all. I keep imagining him in 15-20 years from now, playing a ruthless king/scheming minister/corrupt politician/almighty chaebol and giving the young hero run for his money in terms of screen presence, ha! Then I can be that annoying old lady who's all "current MLs aren't what they used to be back in the day!")))

4

@gikata He said he was at first hesitant or didn't know about doing Flower of Evil because of his age (and because it was a married, head of household father character) and I was kinda thrown by that cause (a) he could totally pull off being in his 30s (he was in his late 30s and the characters were in their mid 30s I think) (b) I wonder what mental prep it takes to play a husband & father that it could actually make someone hesitant to take the role.

I don't completely understand why the older he gets, the less he can get a romantic role. He doesn't *look* old and besides that, people beyond their teens & 20s *do* actually date or have sex. Some even get married.

Honestly, since I'm personally not into romance like that, I wouldn't mind if he didn't do that genre but it's just the principle of ageism and typecasting preventing him from doing it that makes me defensive.

The flying dad in Moving is in his 40s (I think). The uncle from A Shop for Killers is in his 40s (I think) haha yet the former had the romance in Moving & the latter was in a romcom movie recently (I think) haha
I keep laughing cause I'm not 100% sure of anything but fairly positive what I'm saying is accurate haha

Sidenote: I'm getting some uncanny valley looking at Again My Life clips haha
It comes and goes.

I think he looks different nowadays but I can't put my finger on what's different.

Like if I didn't know who he was, I don't think I would necessarily recognize him as the same guy from Lawless Lawyer -> Flower of Evil -Sword of Aramun

Same with his 20s. He looks so different (to me) from The King & The Clown -> My Girl -> Time between Dog & Wolf

1

@britney you're right, I think his character was only 3 years younger than himself of something... but he also had to portray ML in flashbacks starting from his early 20s and show this emotional and visual development gradually, which couldn't be that easy. For a marriage thing... well, leads were together for 14 years when drama events start - that's a lot and creates a certain couple dynamic that I can see a bachelor struggling to replicate. He also never played a non-absent father before))) If you think about, there aren't many prime time kdramas where leads are married for 10+ years from the get-go and it's NOT about cheating.

Welcome to kdrama world in all its lookist, ageist and all the other -ist glory! There are indeed actors who continue to play in heavy romance in their 40s and even later, but not only it's not THAT common, it's also mostly actors who ALREADY long established themselves in the genre. I mean that you don't really see folks mainly known for their thrillers, for example, suddenly switching to romcoms/love melos this late into their career - it's usually the opposite way train.

Recently Joo Ji Hoon, another drop dead gorgeous man and fantastic actor in his 40s, was announced to lead a romcom drama and news made a HUGE fuss over his "first romcom role since famous debut 18 years ago!!!" which was hilarious because: a) he's done a bunch of romance movies after debut, b) was in a hit LEGAL romcom only in 2020 and his performance there (all aspects of it - from comedy to smooching) was VERY appreciated by viewers both locally and internationally. I think he even trended for his epic bedroom eyes once - fully deserved, btw)))

So when we start talking about people who REALLY didn't dabble in this genre for AGES - or at all - it's not easy for them to even get such offers because writers/PDs/producers simply won't think of them as a first/second/third option. Why, when there are tons of other actors whom viewers already know and love for their onscreen romance skills? Ofc it's a bit different when a big household name actor is involved, but generally SK public are people of habit. Not many investors would be ready to risk their money on a project with a big question mark attached to its cast, even for such an innocent reason.

LJG is kind of infamous for his fluctuating weight and his face changing quite a lot along with it. This used to be even more jarring: compare him in SCHOLAR and then MOON LOVERS - you'd get the mood whiplash of your life, and these 2 dramas were made like 1+ year apart! He also keeps experimenting with his diet/workout routine and this reflects on his looks too. Chameleon fox, that man)))

AGAIN MY LIFE filtered him hard to look younger and that was rather noticeable sometimes.

2

We are still *young* enough to remember swooning over Lee Joon-gi. 😍😍😍

1

^^ Which our families may have (surely did) found comical.

1

Your description of "shamelessly fun" for My Girl is just so perfect. 😂👏

If the legend is true then we can't see him in a rom-com ever!? 🙈🙃

1

@seeker I mostly resigned myself to the fact that this will never happen. Neither market nor himself seem interested, so unless he wakes up one day and is like "I need to do something wildly unexpected for fun"... or some heavily funded VERY desperate producer stalks him until he agrees... go figure.

I feel like he did tested the waters with the genre through that variety show he did with PMY, but that crashed and burn in the end because SK public is lame enough to not get the difference between shipping characters and actors, so if I was him, I wouldn't want to get myself into any of that ever again either.

1

All I hear you say Gikata is that Beanies need to fund the drama if they want to see him. 🤣

@seeker if I get rich before he retires, sure, count me in)))

Ah, once upon a time it was Haru-yah~~~; now we get Sunjae-yah~~~. Kim Hye Yoon is back!

I had already loved the drama from the first episode; the heroine is so cute and easy to root for, but after the last few minutes of episode 2, I was full on obsessed. Rewatching their interactions up until that point with new context really changes everything.

With the radio phone call, I just thought he's an incredibly chill guy since he barely reacted when Sol screamed at them through her phone, unlike others in the room, and he seemed mature beyond his age in how he responded to her and encouraged her to live on. But now, it's clear that he knew who she was and her condition when she picked up the call, and those words he said to her carried more meanings. I'm sure he's been waiting for the chance to say that to her, because he was actually one of the people who's thankful that she's alive. Also, he introduced himself as Ryu Sun Jae, not Eclipse's RSJ, as if he was hoping she would remember him from their high school days.
Another point that I thought was weird was that he looked a bit disappointed when her friend showed up on the bridge and he couldn't give her a ride home anymore. Or that his 19-year-old self was way too tolerant of her crazy antics and got jealous wayyy too fast.

The reveal was done really well; it not only increased the emotional weight but also lessened the slightly negative implications of Sol throwing herself at him and crossing boundaries to interfere with his life (in spite of her good intentions) and him potentially falling in love with her while she's doing that. Him already crushing on her and kind of letting her get away with a lot because he's actually enjoying her attention makes this blossoming romance easier to invest in.

I did have a gripe about Sol acting not at all like a 34-year-old whenever she was with SJ. But I guess it made sense since (1) she was his fangirl, (2) she had always perceived SJ as someone her age, and (3) TS stayed forever a 19-year-old from her past, so she saw him and treated him as a boy.

The FL is so fun and lovely. It's funny how she's still an adult in her head and her past crush has no power on her anymore. She still needs to work on her excuses. It was very touching to see her reactions to her family.

It was a nice reveal to see the ML fell for her the first. He had to be so surprised to see her so active with him. I wonder how the show will manage the difference of age.

I think we got a lot of cute scenes but there are a lot of mysteries :

Sun Jae has different schedules with the swimming training. Girls and boys classes are separated. She had a crush on somebody else. He wasn't wearing his school uniforms in the flashbacks with her and gave her in false name. She never thought he was a student.

4

Yes, their schools were different too - she studies in all girls and he studies in all boys school and probably also go to different grades - I though I saw her age as 32 while he was 34? As an original 17 year old, I don't think she ever 'registered' his existence, school uniform or not lol! And of course the name when taking the cassette out lol! I guess he did it because he was underage for that cassette. Her Mom was not happy with the father. I have never liked the actor who plays the father but he wil probably play someone different. I wonder what their backstory is.

2

Oh, something else I noticed- During the concert- Sun-Jae starts talking at the beginning of his piano solo, then we switch to Im-Sol outside, and she ( and us, with the switch) can no longer hear what SJ is saying in his introduction I'm betting that what he said was important/relevant
