Biography[]

Early life[]

John Adams IV was born to the presidential Adams family, and became a respectable man of New York society. He began an affair with Oscar van Rhijn, the son of a wealthy Dutch-American "old money" family.

Season 1[]

When Marian Brook arrives in New York, her aunts Agnes and Ada introduce her to John Adams as a potential suitor at tea with Oscar, but the idea is later dismissed when he does not show interest.

Oscar tells John about finding the "perfect girl" to marry, who is from a wealthy family, and who is kind but yet naive, intending to continue their relationship after he is married. Later, he confesses that the girl is Gladys Russell, complaining that he can no longer marry her as he believes that her father, George Russell, will soon face financial ruin, and that he will have to start from scratch. John seems to be cautious about the idea of Oscar marrying, but seems to accept it as an eventual necessity.[1]

When John and Oscar next meet up in a bar, they are discussing how George Russell retained his wealth in spite of everyone in high society believing that he would soon face ruin. Oscar explains to him that he has hired Bertha Russell's lady's maid Turner to act as a spy, who will also do all that she can in order to push for a marriage between Oscar and Gladys.[2]
