A Christmas angel grants a wish to a Christmas hater, to have her life as a singer.
Christmas in July 2022 - Movie #11 🩱🏖🎄
I thought this was gonna be a fun romp, this lady is gonna live this Christmas Day over and fun stuff will happen. No it will not. This is not a fun time. There’s some serious issues folks are dealing with, depression, alcoholism, just to name a few. An angel grants a wish for this lady to live the life she’s always wanted, and it’s not great people. The cast is really good, Loretta Devine shines, and the story is decent. It could’ve veered off into heavy handiness, but it didn’t. It’s very much akin to “It’s A Wonderful Life.” They're similar ideas, but not the same story. There’s heart to it, but man is it heavy. Not a bad watch, just go in knowing it’s a serious drama.
I supported the writer’s strike but maybe we should be letting AI take a stab at writing movies cause they have to be better than this
Loretta Devine and Amber Riley deserve better than this plot. This movie was completely off the rails with a story that should’ve come with a trigger warning. Amber is a washed up singer that couldn’t make it big and now she’s a waitress, an alcoholic and suicidal. She gets granted a wish to live out her life if she made it as a singer, which shows her that the same problems exist with or without fame. This is so dramatic for no reason, and as soon as the déjà vu part starts, this plot goes downhill fast. This includes a catty girl group (because nothing says Christmas like a girl fight and pitting women again each other!!), a hot bartender that becomes her husband in this fantasy that she then cheats on??, and her dead father as a ghost. Someone please let Amber into a better movie, especially one with better music for her to sing.
I love this movie about a boring old white man angel giving a Glee person deva vu! Deja vu in this situation means a fever dream where you're a singing diva who has a drinking problem. Give me some deja vu, angel Gabriel!
Yeah, wow, Amber Riley did not deserve that shitty script and awful dialogue and budget limitations that became very obvious in the final performance.
Neither did Loretta Devine.
They did their best.
Decent holiday film, better than others seen. The message is nice too. Don’t settle for less than you deserve, especially during the time of giving. You should only deliver your gifts to those who deserve to have them. Kandi’s gift was her incredible vocal range. Unfortunately, she has been long since harboring grief, her father having died ten years prior to film events. Kandi turns to alcohol (specifically those minibar bottles) much to the disappointment of her mother Krystal. Yet, a chance meeting on Christmas Eve grants Kandi an “It’s A Wonderful Life” possibility that’s anything but wonderful. Events of the past still have a huge, crushing domino effect on the richer, successful version of Kandi.
My favorite moment was Loretta Devine (Krystal) and Amber Riley (Kandi) singing harmoniously together in the church— beautifully done. Also loved the presence of Noah Ricketts, the sweet Frankie from “Fellow Travelers.” He plays Matthew, Kandi’s work bestie.
This was such a funny Lifetime quality movie because the budget was nonexistent! I was so confused why Amber Riley wasn’t singing all over this movie until I realized the movie was only using songs that are in the public domain… They couldn’t afford to get any licenses for any songs, couldn’t afford decent hair and makeup and costuming, couldn’t afford nice sets for Kandi’s rich lifestyle, couldn’t afford decent effects for the handful of times special effects were used… All the money went to the pockets of Amber Riley and Loretta Devine but that honestly might have been the smartest choice for this movie. Besides being terribly cheap, the movie also served up some good pearl clutching drama and had a somewhat good moral about believing wealth can instantly make your life better.
Amber Riley stars as Kandi Summers, a failed R&B singer who's working as a waitress and trying to deal with the colossal trauma of her father dying at one of her performances... It's Christmas Eve and, in an alcoholic stupor, she tries to walk in front of a train until she is stopped by a mysterious old dude who turns out to be the Angel Gabriel. She tells him she's angry at God for giving her a terrible life and she wants a new one. Since it's Christmas, he grants her wish and she experiences... CHRISTMAS DEJA VU.
Except, uh, it's not deja vu. There is a moment very near the end of the film that could be described as…
