Our family only spent one night in this guesthouse, and didn’t get to explore the area as much as we’d hoped. That said, it provided two very spacious rooms in the main building with en suite bathroom. There was no air conditioning in the rooms, so it was important to leave the windows open--just bring earplugs. The main thing I appreciate is that the proprietor was happy to watch our bags over the weekend when it turned out we needed to drop two temporarily to fit into our rental car for the weekend. Really appreciate that!
I know Munich quite well -- lived there for a year and go back frequently. For the price & location, this is a good value. The Englischer Garten is lovely and there are very few hotels that border it, so it's an unusual experience for Munich. The neighborhood is quiet, and you're well positioned in Schwabing, which is a very lively part of town once you get away from the garden and are closer to Muenchener Freiheit / Leopoldstrasse. The owner is quite friendly. What the other reviews here don't mention, though, is that this hotel has multiple buildings. The main building is quite charming; we checked in there. However, our room was actually in an apartment building across the street. Still very quiet, but the apartment was very mundane while still adequate. You lose all the charm over there -- but you'll get a taste of the sorts of buildings many Germans live in.…
This is a popular place for American travelers to get a feel of real spice of Germany. This place is extremely charming, however in my case charming only goes so far. The couple who run this guest house did not make note I had pre-paid for my visit w/ breakfast included, and watched me like hawks when taking food or coffee from the buffet. This was uncomfortable until I made reference to my status. So make sure they are clear on your payment! Also, the window in my bedroom did not open. They are charming bedrooms, with small windows and no airconditioning. As a single english speaking traveler, it was difficult as the owners spoke mostly german...keep in mind it will be easier for you if someone in your group speaks German. I would suggest this guest house if you want a piece of Germany without any of the regular amenities.…
For the Germany-travelling Enthusists, this hotel should be your choice pick. Surrounded by peace and tranquility, the Hotel am Englischer Garten has the feel of your favorite grandmother's cozy house-- all the while ensuring that a traveller has the best amenties, wonderful breakfast observing the park and river, and has a great bed and clean facilities. Please avoid the touristy areas and experience REAL Germany! It is absolutely enchanting, and we will always return here to get a breath of fresh air. Munich is much more delightful when you are immersed in its charm-- not surrounded by hoards of tourists! Please come here when you stop in Munich, you won't regret it!
My husband and I really enjoyed our pleasant stay at the Gastehaus Englischer Garten. The room decor was very tranquil and cosy, and we had breakfast on the patio overlooking the water. We were very close to the Englischer Garten, so we spent and afternoon lying in the sun and having a picnic near our hotel. It is a very good priced hotel, with helpful staff and a quiet getaway from the touristy downtown area. Close to the train station also. Great hotel-- we will be back!
We stayed at the Gastehaus Englisher Garten last week (Feb 4-7). After researching for hotels for a month I always hope we made the right decision. This time we had! We had room #90 on the main floor. I believe there is one other room next door. The room was huge as was the bathroom. Both very rare in Europe. The breakfast was great although not included in the price ( 9 Euros additional per person) We ended up with a nightly rate of 127 Euros w/ breakfast p/ night. Not bad for Munich. There is not a lift. It looked like a very narrow stairway up and down so we were thrilled w/ the location of our room. Didn't want to drag our luggage up and down the stairs. Better to get directions from the hotel if your using the subway system. The directions on their Web site are for driving. If your tired of the Brat and Kraut meals there is a great Italian restaurant a couple of blocks away Pasta e Basta. (Feilitzsch Strasse 23). All pasta made fresh to your order. VERY cheap. Serves wine and beer as well. Don't let the sterile look of the place scare you. It doesn't have the warm cozy feel but the food is excellent. Across the street form the hotel is another great restaurant. I bet this place is beautiful during the spring and summer. …
We stayed there ten years ago for several nights and we are returning to Munich this year and wish to stay there again as we enjoyed ourselves so much. Location near the actual gardens is superb.
When we walked into our room at this hotel, I was shocked. My dorm room in college was better than this-chipped furniture with many, many water stains on the surfaces, threadbare carpet, cheap towels and shampoo and bathing soap all rolled into one. But the worst thing was the toilet experience. When we arrived, I noticed hair and a crusty yellow spot on the toilet seat. I told the young woman at the desk that I thought our toilet hadn't been cleaned. She accompanied me to our room to see. First, she swept the hair onto the floor and tried to blame the spot on an old toilet. As she was saying this, she was scraping the spot off with her fingernail (!). At this point, I was disgusted and left the room. When she could see the old toilet ruse wasn't going to work, she, sulkily, left for the cleaning equipment to clean the toilet. The hair was never vacuumed up. After that experience, we didn't dare have breakfast there, so I can't comment on that. Overall, a bad, bad experience. …
My wife and I (early 30s) stayed here in our last leg of a four stop, 18day european trip (Vienna-Venice-Bellagio-Munich) in April 06. The hotel was almost everything the other reviews and pictures represent. A small B&B like experience next to the English Garden. The room was clean and everything worked fine. Staff was fine. However the hotel didn't really overlook the english garden like I thought. It was next to it but some trees and corners of other building (depending on your room) block the view. You technically probably 200 yds away. You can't really see it from the room. There is a little spring between the hotel and the english garden. Our view was of a backyard of the apartment building next to us. There is an authentic German restaurant right across the street. We ate there once. Just OK. But I have to admit I had had it with weiner schnitzel and sausage by that point. If weather was better we could've enjoyed their beer garden. And if weather was better we could have enjoyed the proximity to the garden more. You are only a 5 min walk to the lake in the garden. It is a good 10 min walk to the train. Munchner Freheit stop. The walk is half residential (apts) and half small business (bars, music stores, mediterannean fast food, more than a couple tatoo places, a McDs). I couldn't quite figure out the neighborhood. A lot of people hanging outside drinking on the sidewalk. I wouldn't say I felt unsafe, but not comfortable either. The german trains were great and easy to navigate, nevertheless if I made it back to Munich I would stay closer to the inner city. …
I agree with others that you really do feel at home here. It has a quaint bed and breakfast feel to it. Although outside the main tourist area, it couldn't be easier to get to and from downtown on the underground. The owners are warm and the breakfast felt like you were sitting in your grandmother's kitchen eating with old friends. We absolutely recommend going to the local restaurant located across the street. While not a soul spoke any english they could not have been warmer or more inviting and the food was among the best we had anywhere. Staying at this hotel gave us a chance to experience what it is like to really live in Munich. I would highly recommend it for someone who wants a cozy b&b. However, if modern amenities and having everything at your fingertips is more your thing (which, to tell you the truth, is normally what I prefer) then this hotel won't fit the bill. …
