TVLINE | You had a “Story by” credit on Season 2’s “Throwing a Christian to a Bear.” Two years later, you wrote Season 4’s “Triggered.” How did writing “Fire and Vice” differ from those past experiences?
Because it was later in the season, there was more of a group effort in terms of story, whereas the other stories came very much from my own incentive. This episode had more to do with character development and nearing the end of certain arcs for the season, so it wasn’t like I went in the room and said I want to talk about this, like I did with the Bears/Packers and gun epidemic [episodes]. This was more [about] where these characters [were] and what was going on with them. That being said, there was a lot for both stories on the platter. It was a challenge, but very fulfilling as well.
TVLINE | Jackie expresses concern about Becky’s internship. She’s worried that her niece’s interaction with fellow addicts will have a negative impact on her sobriety journey. On the flip side, do you think that Becky has something to gain from being exposed to others who are struggling with their respective vices and might not be as far along in their recovery?
Absolutely. It’s very much a double-edged sword. There’s that archetype of the wounded healer, right? A lot of people who go into healing professions are aware of their own woundedness, which makes them effective healers, and Becky is no different. But in terms of being involved in a field that is so tenuous and so raw for her, I think a part of her felt like I’m in recovery, I got through this, I know this. But what she didn’t know was how triggering it would be for her, and how the system itself isn’t built for mental health. I think a lot of people in the mental health profession, including Becky, just don’t have enough support, so they end up blurring the lines, investing in their clients. It’s very hard to have boundaries when there’s not a bigger support system.
I understand they had to pivot after Roseanne was let go but I haven’t been a huge fan of the stories. So dark and heavy. It’s like they forgot the definition of Sitcom. I respect the cast and crew for the work they put in. I’m ready for them to end I think.
I think finding humor in the darkness is the point of this show. They represent millions of people who are struggling to get by. There will be no magical lottery win for them.
This week we just had news that Social Security and Medicare will probably run out of money in just over a decade.
What will this mean for Dan who has no 401K or IRA? There’s really no humor here but seeing this family cope and not give up can comfort many.
That is fake alarmist news. As long as the US has a stable working population, Social Security and Medicare wont run out. I don’t understand how people can be so uneducated on this. Now if we cut the working taxes that goes into SSI/MED and just stoped paying into the system entirely – which is what Republicans want – then yes, we would run out of money in a decade. Which MEANS that that is estimated that we have enough in the bank to pay for SSI/MED for a decade even if we did cut those taxes and stopped paying into the system.
sitcoms are supposed to be funny and don’t lean very heavily into realism that’s the point. The Connors is more a drama show than a sitcom.
I’d love 22 more. Would handle 13. Deal with in a pouty way with 6 and be really bummed out with none. I would rather they went on a few more seasons even if less episodes but I have enjoyed having the family I grew up with back in my screen giving me more episodes to enjoy over and over. Thank You Cast and Crew for the hard work!
I enjoyed tonight’s episode. Lecy always writes great episodes. It’s always funny to me when people say this show is dark and heavy. Roseanne was the same way. Every season they always had 1 or 2 episodes that were heavy. Conners follows the same tradition. I really hope it’s more than 6 episodes next season. That feels more like a continuation of season 6. I really hope they get 13 episodes when it’s officially renewed.
I haven’t watched a single show since ROSEANNE left..I HATE WHAT THEY DID TO ROSEANNE..I WILL NEVER WATCH THE CONNERS…
Ok
Then why are you here? Roseanne has no one to blame but herself. Her mental health has gotten worse since being let go. She is not well. It’s sad to see how pathetic she has become. If you actually watch the show you would see it’s just as good as the original Roseanne show.
Hummm…referring to someone with a mental condition as “pathetic”. Being with a mental illness isn’t something someone chooses .🤨 I hope YOU stay well my friend.
I agree no one wants chooses to be mentally ill. However, Roseanne’s behavior is something she chooses to do. She’s plays the victim a lot and blames everyone for her problems. When she’s the problem. So yes she’s very “pathetic.”
She didn’t leave, she was rightfully fired.
I love this show. I wish it would never end. This show is better than Roseanne’s show where much of the attention was on Roseanne. Lacy and Darlene and Jackie are the best. They are very talented and they are shining more on this show. This is my second dysfunctional family. Love this show.
How buying a magazine in what is basically the end of Print publishing is considered a win is hard to fathom. Odd choice for the writers. Mark would be like “what’s a magazine!?” 😳
Most print magazines also have websites. And like books, many people prefer the feel of printed publications.
thank you ” both ” Lecy and Becky for your honest answers / comments. Even with the Lottery, somehow you was able put a positive image on that very ” interesting ” season. By the way you have totally aged gracefully.
I wish The Conners would just keep going. I want to see Dan & Louise live it up in their golden years. We live this show and the way the characters are developing. We wish DJ was still in the picture. Darlene’s kids, we think, should be more present. Where is Grandma?
I love the show. Would love it more with Ro…but I get it. What I don’t get is why a couple things from the original series were not addressed… like we heard about Jerry in like Ep1 of the Roseanne Reboot in 2018 and how he was on a boat BUT nothing about Andy.. Jackie’s kid with Fred. At least give him a mention. Or was that part of the dream season… I can’t remember. It just bugs me. Am I the only one?
Ask Roseanne. It was her idea not to include Andy. It was all apart of her “book” that she wrote. Much like how Dan didn’t really die. Honestly it doesn’t bother me that Jerry isn’t in “The Conners”. Never thought a 4th child was necessary. Andy I wish was included because it would be great to see how she would be as a parent. Other then that I’m happy the direction the show has gone.
Apparently the “writers” put Andy and Fred into the fantasy season so Andy and Jerry both were never born.
He’s buying a hardware magazine. Why not just start another fire and burn the money?
It is the same thing. Buying a magazine is just a bad idea. Print media will be obsolete before the sale is completed. Horrible direction.
We all are so invested in the Conners, in fact my sister married a Conner, that they are truly a family to us. Each actor has blazed a trail in being relatable, flawed, deeply affected by one another and lovable. Make no mistake the writers are integral to the success but the actors put in the blood, sweat and tears that make this half hour program so deliciously worthwhile.
I loved this episode and actually restarted and watched it twice.
Great job everyone.
The shows nit bad but no where near as good as Roseanne. Really nice try but to have Sarah Gulbert take over Roseannes place in the family was wrong. She doesn’t have the real world attitude to pull it off. You might have gotten 8 seasons but I can tell ya it’s no where near as good as the orginal.
Sarah Gilbert, not Gulbert.
Why is this show too depressing?
They really need to “redecorate”, no wonder everyone on that show is depressed. That house hasn’t had an update for over 30 years.
I love the Conners but Dan’s I’ll fitting dentures drive me crazy. Half the time you cannot even understand what he’s saying.
Becky was kind of a brat as a kid, but after she went through so much with Mark and his death, she easily became the one I felt for the most. Dan is one of the best fathers on TV, and when she finally broke at the family councilors office and blamed Mark and also her anger towards her letting him do all he did to her, really was the most emotional scene in either form of the show, but Dan’s comfort and pride for her was exactly the stepping stone she needed to finally see the good in herself. She became my favorite character, but in real life, she’s so smart and kind, which is rare, but she writing this gave her character more than those “married to sobriety” type of storyline that doesn’t ever seem to work, and has every hard situation that they face alone, and is mostly a trigger, as having a partner who is genuinely there for them and doesn’t guilt trip them or enable them, but keeps them feeling strong, is where her character is at. Her working with other addicts is actually good because she gets reminded of the ugly side much more than the side she was previously on. Many previous addicts leave and if they don’t have someone who’s their rock, the facility actually has methods to not just say, “you’re done, good luck, and I’m sure I’ll see you in a few months”, so they make your account-abilty-buddy is someone you can always call when you need advice or to talk and Beck is perfect for that job, as het bf is her rock as well. It’s so much more true to life than Roseanne, and adding Louise was brilliant as shes Dan’s perfect match. She also not one to stick her into everyone’s business but plays an important role that really helps keep the family together and think logically. But I’m happy for how it seems like they have more balance and more consciousness towards each other. And Jackie is still the funniest character esp when it’s her and Darlene hehe.
I have never watched a single episode of The Conners because it only came to be when they stopped the Roseanne reboot by killing off Roseanne because of Leftist political biases (y’all hate President Trump, and Roseanne supported him)
I am so bummed that The Conner’s is coming to an end again. I cried when Roseanne went off and I am sure all cry at the end of this one.
They become like part of our family, and getting them a second time has been great.
I will miss everyone of them again.
I wish them all the best in there lives. 🫶🫶🫶🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🥰🥰🥰❤️💙🩷💜 Much Love
