In what was certainly one of Chelsea’s best performances of the season, we outplayed our London rivals from start to finish, to defeat Tottenham 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

It was Trevoh Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson goals in each half which secured an important victory, but the Blues barely put a foot wrong all over the pitch, and Alfie Gilchrist revealed the feeling at the final whistle was up there with scoring his first senior goal for the club against Everton as the best moment of his fledgling career.

‘It feels just as good, getting a win against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge and getting the clean sheet as well, which is just as important,’ said the young defender.

‘It was amazing for all the players and the fans to get that win at Stamford Bridge. The team played so well together we just need to keep building on this.

‘We were well organised and structured. We spoke well and carried out our jobs and got it done. It gives us all belief and boosts our confidence massively, so now we hope to keep climbing the table.’

Academy graduate Gilchrist is one player who certainly needed no introduction to the rivalry between Chelsea and Tottenham. As a lifelong Blues supporter he experienced the atmosphere these games bring a number of times from the stands, and thanked head coach Mauricio Pochettino for the trust he continues to show in him during his breakthrough campaign.

‘I feel like these games are only going to help me and I improve game by game, by testing myself against the best players.

‘I used to sit in the East Stand upper. Every time I was up there I wanted to be down here playing and that’s what I’m doing now, so I just want to keep taking my chances and any opportunities that I get.

‘If you’d told me this was going to happen at the beginning of the season I probably wouldn’t have believed you. It’s a dream come true and I hope to keep ticking off the achievements.

‘The manager’s given me a lot of confidence and just believed in me to go out there and do my thing and play football for Chelsea, so it’s brilliant. I came on against Palace for my debut and after that he kept pushing me even more.

‘Then I got my first start and from there I’ve built a really good relationship with him. He keeps us calm and lets us know what we need to do. He helps us all a lot and we’re all learning and will keep going.’

He was far from the only player from our Academy involved in the win over Spurs, too. Lining up alongside Chalobah and captain Conor Gallagher from the start, Josh Acheampong, Jimi Tauriainen and Cesare Casadei were then all introduced from a youthful bench.

That left Gilchrist passing on his own lessons and experience to his younger team-mates, despite only making his own senior debut a little over four months ago.

‘It just shows how good we are as an Academy. Our players can do it and if you look at the bench last night there were a lot of young boys coming on as well and playing their part.

‘I’m a little bit older than them and I’ve captained Academy teams they’ve played in as well. So I was helping them because I know the feeling of coming on and making your debut, just making it that little bit easier for them helps.

‘Part of my game is my leadership and I hope to keep showing that on the pitch. You’ve got to give it your all, all the time, especially on nights like this to get a 2-0 win over Tottenham.’
