Thoughts on Zig now?

Since today is April 27, and is the sixth month anniversary for Zig, I'm wondering what everyone's thoughts are now that some time has passed. I know it was mixed, and I wasn't really feeling it either, but It's honestly really grown on me. Possibly my fav Poppy album?

I’ve always really liked it.

I think it's a weaker album, like basically all great artists have in their discography

It's is slowly becoming my top played Poppy album. Church outfit, knockoff, and zig are all my top Poppy tracks rn i really love this album 😍

I love the album, but then again I'm a new fan. But I often see many fans on twitter saying it's absolutely "shit" and actually talking badly about it. I thought they were joking about it but nope.

I love zig! Just too many vinyl varients

I love it. I really like what it becomes, linger, hard, flicker and prove it!!💕I remember not really loving it at first but I’m usually like that with most albums I listen to tbh. I’m super excited for Zag and what else is yet to come🥰I love how Poppy always changes up her style!

It could be my favorite poppy album if it weren’t for the irreplaceable nostalgia I have for Am I A Girl and I Disagree. Zig has a bunch of insanely catchy songs. Hard has joined my top 25 songs of all time. I loved Zig when it first released and I still love it now.

I'm gonna get hundreds of downvotes for this, but in the last few months I have not listened to the album anymore except for Church Outfit (100% masterpiece!). Props to Poppy for creating once again something different than what people expected from her, but the result is forgettable and IMO it will age terribly. Already has. Even Poppy doesn't play much of the album during concerts anyway.

It’s in the same category as AIAG for me - some very high highs, but a few too many lows. I think it’s weird that she promoted so much as a high fidelity ‘sonic’ record when a lot of the mixes are muddy (some muddier than ID or EAT). At least for those two it made sense for them to be messy, but a lot of Zig is compressed for the sake of being compressed.

If ID is a 9/10, I’d place Zig at a 7.5/10.

I def agree w ur point!💗

I really enjoy it! I can see why people might not like is (whether it's how chaotic it can sound or some people are upset it wasn't more rock/metal, which I don't really care lol), but I think it's quite enjoyable still. Wouldn't be my favorite album, but there is a couple songs I really love on this album. Think my least favorite is 1s + 0s, while some people find the song Zig to be annoying, I found this one to be annoying. Only little complaint is sometimes the vocals gets drowned out be the instruments during certain times on songs, but it doesn't hurt my experience overall.

I have to admit, I mostly only listen to the singles. This didn't happen to me with AIAG, I disagree or Flux. The favorites are Knockoff and Motorbike. But I don't regret buying it.

personally i've really liked it since the beggining! it's definitely not my favorite from her, but i do still enjoy listening to it and find most of the songs to be very loveable :)

I've been listening for years and Zig is my fav Poppy album by far

u/CMKR_05 avatar

There’s some great songs on there, some of the best she has done

Loved it from the start and now I love it even more

I really like Hard and listen to it frequently. Would've loved a full album with that sound. But overall not an album for me.

idk its like an album i can listen to and appreciate for what it is and i really like it and vibe to it when i listen to it but like when im not listening to it i dont see a reason to revisit it like its not crazy and definety weaker than albums like Flux and IDM

I do like motorbike and hard, and I think I like church outfit/knockoff...? but the rest is pretty forgettable to me... it was just one miss in her discography and it's not even that bad of a miss, but I do hope she impresses more with her next EP/album release because I don't play Zig that often in the sea of her other work

Great album but not one of my higher rated in her discography

Loved it from day 1. As the comments here prove most of those who disliked it disliked it because it’s not “oooh, heavy!”. For those who consider the refusal to commit to any identity to be her appeal, it was yet another reminder that whatever genre she’s doing at the time, she does it to perfection.

It's her best release since I Disagree, the EAT EP and Spit, imo. Been having that opinion from the start.

u/ElDuderino2112 avatar

Mediocre in my opinion and a step down from a lot of her previous work

Love although i don’t find myself coming back to it as much as i did when it released. I listen to all her projects about equally

Zig is a nice and pragmatic programming language but we already have plenty of them.

It’s a very needed part of poppy’s discography imo, it’s a nice mix of Am I a girl and Choke kinda. My favs are the title track Zig, 1s + 0s, prove it, and what it becomes (but all songs are great)

I loved it!!

Not as impactful or powerful as some of her others, but it's still very unique and has some really memorable songs

Hard is her best song ever. The whole album feels the most developed out of them all. With Poppy's other albums it took me some time to get into them but with Zig I was hooked instantly. None of the tracks are skips.

There are aspects of it that have a lot of potential and I definitely enjoy the general direction she wanted to move in. However, the album overall is just pretty low quality. A lot of the songs feel unfinished. There's really poor mixing and production and a lot of the lyrics sound like first drafts and are probably some of the worst writing in her entire catalog. As an album it sounds very uncohesive.

I think the worst thing I can say about the album is that it actually sounds better to listen to on speakers that compress it because listening to some of the songs on higher quality equipment reveals just how messy a lot of the production is.

Overall, the album feels like it has the same issues as flux but significantly worse.

her best album.

Its ok, it's definitely not on the same level as Am I A Girl or I Disagree but it's fine for what it is, Church Outfit, Hard, Flicker, Zig the song, and 1s + 0s are the only songs I like, the rest are pretty forgettable, motorbike in particular feels like a different variation of Girls in Bikinis

u/BrawnicusAndronicus avatar

I like most of the songs on the album. I wasn't amazed by it for my first few listens but it definitely grew on me. Motorbike, Knockoff and The Attic are my favourites.

u/useless_bag_of_tacos avatar

eh i think it’s still her weakest imo, but it has grown more on me. i started listening during poppy.computer, but i’m more partial to am i a girl?, i disagree, and eat

u/htoany avatar

i found it really disappointing on first listen (i only liked the attic and motorbike) but now pretty much the whole tracklist has grown on me

i can't tell if Poppy wanted to take another stab at being a more popular artist with Zig... or it was Republic Records pushing her. remember, they had her working with Ali Payami, taylor swift's producer.

being she left republic and went back to Sumerian (metal label) and Sumerian released Zig instead of Republic... and poppy basically said she didn't think the republic executives even like music. but she did say she likes Ali. so, it's murky at best.

listen, Proppy should have been the "weirdo katy perry" a decade ago.but the stars just didn't align for whatever reason. poppy computer was a great odd ball pop album. but i think she's just a different artist and person now. i don't think she really wants to be miley cyrus... i mean maybe she wouldn't mind a bit of miley's popularity, but poppy is NOT a pop artist. she's too good for that!

anyway, there's no real way around it. Metal is what poppy does best. she can still weave in pop and electro, but probably her greatest fan base are metalheads. and they were like HUH? with Zig.

u/TheMediumJanet avatar

She is very outspoken against labels forcing her to do a certain kind of music or act in certain ways, she would never have released Zig if she was forced to it. She would never have released it through Sumerian if she wanted to be the next Katy Perry/Miley Cyrus or whatever.

She will never be an exclusively metal artist. She will never be an exclusively pop artist either. She has been on record about not having any regard for genres or labels for years now. And many Poppy fans actually like that this identity crisis is a staple of her music. The woman has a massive talent and flexibility, why should she suppress it and limit herself to only one genre?

It’s fine and I don’t hate it but I want her to do another one like I Disagree

u/skaboom420 avatar

It’s a bad attempt at going back to a poppier style. It’s lacks the creativity and songwriting of the early albums. At least it’s better than flux.
