- Edited 6 months agoAlbum Revolution #6:
Even though "Now Do U Wanta Dance" was a BLAST out the gate, "My Radio Sure Sounds Good To Me" saw some extreme changes for "Larry Graham and Graham Central Station"....
First off, the name change...
Second, most of the original band members were gone...I don't know what happened with that, and we probably never will...Besides "Larry", the only other person left over from the original band was "Robert "Butch" Sam"....The other band members consist of "Mrs. Tina Graham" (Vocals), "Gaylord "Flash" Birch (Drums), "Gemi Taylor" (Guitar), and "Nate Ginsberg" (Keyboards)....
With this band, the first joint, Pow!!!! (1st Crown Jewel), was a BLAST out the gate, sounding like some original "Graham Central Station" "Funk" with Interchangeable Vocals....
The 2nd Crown Jewel, "My Radio Sure Sounds Good To Me", has "Tina's" Lead Vocals on a BUMPIN' track, with the rest of the group "Doo-Wooping" in the background (again, sounding like classic "Graham Central Station")...
"Is It Love?", The Ultimate, Ultimate Crown Jewel, is another "Funk Love Letter", that "Larry" just RIPS, with Super Funky Bass (of course!) and FANTASTIC Guitar work by "Gemi"....
"Boogie Witcha, Baby" just missed the Crown Jewel rating for me, but it is very very close...
"It's The Engine In Me", is the only dud on here, in fact, I skip this one every time, Yuck!!!!!
"Turn It Out", gets the album back on track, especially "Funk" wise...
The other Ultimate, Ultimate, Ultimate Crown Jewel in "Mr. Friend", if you listen closely, is a nice track about his "Spirituality", on a very very GROOVY track....
The last song and Crown Jewel, "Are You Happy?", is not only a great song, but a very good question....
Even though this particular album wasn't as "Funk Heavy" as the others, it still was "Funk" personified (even in the age of "Disco")....Once again, things would change in the future, but at least right here "Larry" and "G.C.S." were still in tact.... - Edited one year agoI have seen a few Salsoul records in my time, in fact I thought I had seen them all, but this is surely one of the more unexpected releases. No outside indication of label on the sleeve, I wonder if I came across this before and just ignored it, but it's certainly Salsoul.
*Edit: RCA Music Club Edition...are there more titles from this club that have been pressed with Salsoul labels?
